My name is Nadia and I'm 26 years old. I am from Boston, have an 11 year old dog Murphy and love watching sports. I am an avid tweeter, blogger, and social butterfly. Over the past 4 years I have gained about 40 lbs. I have always had a distorted body image i.e. when I was thinner I thought I was huge and now that I am very overweight I don't think I look that bad. Well I mean I know I don't look "good" but I also don't realize how big I am til I see pics and I'm like holy moly! Anyway I have a journal like this on another forum that documents a transition in another part of my life so I think this will help me greatly!

-- How much weight do you want to lose? I would initially like to lose 40 lbs. Once I reach that I will reasses because in all actually I'm more concerned with being healthy and feeling good then an actual number. I would also like to fit into a size 6 because at that size I think I looked my best.

-- What is the timeframe for reaching your target weight? I would like to reach my goal by this time next year.

-- How do you want to accomplish your goal (what methods do you want to use)? I want to accomplish this by drastically changing my eating habits and increasing my exercise.

-- Who or what can support you in reaching your goal? My friends and family can and will support me.

-- How realistic is your goal? My goal is very realistic as the goal weight of 130 lbs is appropriate for my height and body type.

-- When will you start? I will start tomorrow, July 18, 2010.

What is your current height and weight? My height is 5'4 and my weight is 199 lbs. as of two mins ago.
If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be? If I were at an ideal weight it would be 130 lbs.
At what weight would you like to be at four months from now? I would like to weigh 170 lbs in 4 months.
Why do you want to lose weight? I want to lose weight because I don't feel healthy and I want to do so many things that my weight is holding me back from doing. I love fashion and I want to be able to buy the clothes I want and feel comfortable in them.
Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event? Well I'm not losing it for these events but I am going to be in two weddings next year.
What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals? My lack of will power and motivation at times.
Why do you think that you now have a weight problem? Because I don't control myself when eating and am lazy and don't work out.
What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight? I need to establish a routine and stick with it in regards to working out. I also need to make a change in my eating.
Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight? I've lost weight before on fad diets but then regained the weight.
Why do you believe that you did not lose weight or you gained the weight back? Because I had used them as quick fixes and didn't change my lifestyle.
What, if anything, has not worked for you in the past in helping you to lose weight? Why do you think it did not work? N/A
Would you try writing down all food and drink consumed for a given period of time? Yes because I know that that is a proven method that works.
Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook? I don't but I plan on starting soon.
How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go? I don't go out to eat but I order lots of take out from pizza shops and Chinese food restaurants.
What are your three favorite foods? Chicken wings, french fries and mac n cheese
What are your three favorite restaurants? A local steakhouse, chinese food restaurant, and pub food
What are three things you can do differently when it comes to food? Eat the appropriate portions, eat lower calorie versions of the foods I love, and eat the right amount of times a day.
If you woke up tomorrow and your body was exactly the way you want it, what would be different? Just my weight. I'd still be the same person on the inside with the same general life problems and issues as anyone else.
Do you eat when you are not hungry? Yes.
Do you binge eat (large amounts at a time)? Yes.
Do you hide your food or eat in secret? Yes.
Do you eat when you are sad, nervous, or depressed? Yes.
Do you eat as a reward? Yes.
Do you eat while watching TV or using the computer? Yes.
What do you normally eat for a meal? A pizza and fries, a sub and fries, Chinese food and fries. Typically something & fries.
What type of snacks do you eat? Ice cream, chips, cookies, etc.
In terms of exercise, what, if anything, are you currently doing? I haven't gone to the gym in 3 weeks.
Where do you go for exercise? A local public gym? School/work gym? Home? I usually work out at the gym.
What, if anything, are your three favorite types of exercise? Running, weight lifting, and the elliptical machine.
What is your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly motivation to move towards your goals? Every day take it one step at a time until I reach my goal.
Do you have rewards for certain goals? When I reach my goal weight I want to go on a shopping spree. But that's all. ;)

The first is a picture of me during thinner times on 12/31/06. And the second is a picture of me from 6/10.

Good luck with your weight loss. You have the right attitude by coming to the conclusion that to lose the weight and keep it off it has to be a change of lifestyle not a fad diet.
Make sure that you get plenty of exercise even if it is only walking as that really helps.
One of the best things when you first get started is to write down everything that you eat and drink and weigh your food and work out the calories to find out exactly what you are eating.
And the most important thing is that if you eat something that you really shouldn't have then don't beat yourself up about it and go back to your old ways but just get straight back to healthy eating and try and make up for it by going more careful for the next couple of days. :D

Just wanted to say welcome to the board Nadia - you certainly won't be alone here and I hope you find it useful having us guys to talk to and support you through your journey - we've all been there and are at various stages in our weight loss journey.

Congrats on the taking the first step though and deciding to do something about it!

Good morning new friends! Last night I made a mini goal of waking up today and going for a walk! And I did it. My dog Murphy and I walked 2.27 mi. in 39:43 mins. and burned 328 calories at 6:30 am.

A small victory for me! w00t! lololol. Murphy is taking a nap now. I think he was kinda shocked. Obviously I take him for walks but we haven't gone for a long one like this in a while. He was ecstatic but by the end a lil worn out. He's old lmao.

Thank you for your advice eyckmans. I am definitely going to log everything I eat here. My first challenge is actually gonna happen today. I have plans to meet one of my girlfriend's for brunch this afternoon. My typical brunch meal would normally be waffles or french toast, lots of homefries and tons of sausage. This would usually be accompanied by at least 3 brunch cocktails... Obviously that's not going to work anymore.

I'm not gonna go crazy and be militant in what I eat because when I do that I usually relapse. So instead I'm gonna set boundaries for myself. I will allow myself one brunch cocktail that's not high in sugar and will choose something that is relatively healthy off of the menu. I've already peeked at it online to mentally prepare myself for the options and kind of narrow down what I'll have. I'll ask our server questions before I decide though.

Thanks for checking in everyone and I'll be sure to update you later with how the rest of my day went. :)

Hi, Nadia. I was reading your weight loss diary.

I hope you manage well. Good luck to you :)

Just checking in and sharing how my Sunday went. So I went to brunch with my friend. I walked about 15 mins from the train station to the restaurant and it was 90*+ today. I thought I might die haha. She couldn't find parking so I had to wait for her for a little bit but no worries, there was a super cute host to keep me occupied hehehe.

I decided on the steak and eggs option because it's protein. It came with potatoes so I asked that they hold those and substitute a small salad with the dressing on the side. I also made sure they didn't put any extra butter or anything on the steak and I got my eggs over medium. I drank my one cocktail that I said I would have and it was a champagne drink. After brunch I had a decaf cappuccino made with skim milk and 1 1/2 Splenda.

I was so proud of myself because I totally wanted french toast, potatoes and sausage lol. My friend had a Greek omelette that came with potatoes and offered me some and I politely declined. Also my food came with toast which I happily passed on to her. The entire meal I was drinking water and had to have my glass refilled at least 3 times.

So the point is it's obvious I can make good decisions it's just being consistent with them. I got a Lean Cuisine meal for dinner that I'll eat later. And then True Blood! w00t! :D

A woman after my own heart! I love me some True Blood!

Congrats on your good decisions. Fitting in exercise and eating sensibly are the key elements and you seem to know what you're doing. It's good that you're starting slow and not going on a crazy fad diet!
I'm thinking you're going to do great!

I'll check back in when I can and see how you're doing.
Take care!

So I just got back from my walk. It was later in the day and shorter than I had wanted but Murphy was getting really tired and like fumbling about. I think I might have to start taking him for mini walks and then go out on my own for longer... Anywhoo I walked 1.35 mi. w00t! I'm having beef soup for lunch and then I have to work tonight.

Rox now that 24 is cancelled True Blood is definitely my favorite show on tv. It's so good. Last night I nearly died with the amount of sexiness in one episode. *swoon* lol.

Thanks for the words of encouragement everyone. I took this pic before I left for our walk this morning. My celebrity body inspiration is Kim Kardashian who I have a girl crush on. I know a lot of people think she's super fake but I think she's hot and even though I'll prob never have her shape at least I have something to work towards lol. ;)

Hey,
Good job with keeping up with the exercise. I feel like dancing every time i am done. And i like to get it done in the morning as well. if i leave it till the afternoon i make too many excuses.
So i noticed you liked fries a lot..lol. So do I, hope you don't mind, but i am sharing my low cal version of it.
I take one med potato and slice it so thin i can see through it. Add 1 teaspoon of oil and some salt and cayenne pepper ( i like things spicy). Mix and then bake for about 20- 25 mins.. i like mine nice and crispy and with the potato sliced so thin, i feel like i am getting a lot.
You prob know this recipe already but i tried it and i liked it and i am passing it along.
All the best on your journey :D. I'll keep reading...

You look to me like one of the women that make me jealous as you look good with a few extra lbs instead of the blob that I used to look like. :) You are going to have an amazing figure with those extra lbs off.

OMG Island_Girl I'm totally gonna try out that recipe. My parents are from the Caribbean so I love spicy too! Hehehe.

Today I didn't go for a long walk with Murphy because I stayed up way too late! I forgot to mention that I am a waitress. So I have weird hours. I know that's definitely one of my problems because I don't get home until like 11 or so and then stay up until 2... I need to get better sleeping habits. I'm currently looking for a new job also. So today will be my rest day. And I'll get back on the grind tomorrow.

Lol eyckmans at looking good! I think maybe it's the camera angle hehehe. :smilielol5: But actually yesterday my friend Phillip said he wouldn't categorize me as "fat" just "chubby" which I disagree with but whatevs. Hopefully you're right though and I look good when I lose the weight! Teehee!

I think I'm gonna have a bowl of Special K for lunch. Dinner on the nights I work are up to the cooks at the restaurant. Unless I want to run across the street and buy something. But we never know what we're gonna have in advance so I can't gauge and then it's too late to leave and go get something. Oh wells. Hopefully it's not too bad. :)

Hey looks like you're off to a good start! Sounds like you're making good strides with the eating and exercise. Kim Kardashian has an AMAZING bod. I don't really follow her but whenever I see her pics in magazines and such I am always so jealous. I have her butt (though not as toned), but she has way more boobs than me, lol. Even when I'm skinny I got the butt but I get so flat chested:p

Why not start your day from when you arrive at work and finish it when you go to work the next day. That way you can work out what you eat at work and then eat the rest of the calories the next day.

eyckmans I don't think I understand.. You mean not eat til I get to work? I don't get to work til 3.30 in the afternoon. That'd mess my metabolism all up. Maybe I'm just confused as to your suggestion.

Dinner tonight wasn't bad though. Grilled chicken, veggies and a salad. :)

And yes BB2011 I agree. Kim's got it going on lol! I it opposite though... the boobs and not the butt haha. So jealous! I do squats all the time to get a bigger butt lol. ;)

No I don't mean that. What I mean is if you keep a food journal and go to work at then do something like this.
18.30 (evening) - work dinner 500 calories
21.00 (evening) - snack 100 calories
8.00(next day) - breakfast
etc
you can then work out how many calories you have left for the rest of the day until you go to work again depending on what they gave you to eat the night before.
That won't stop you eating high calorie food if they serve it up but at least you can keep to your calories every day by making up for it the next day.
Another thought is would it be possible to get to work a little bit early and ask what is for dinner and if need be nip out and get something else?

Hey there everyone! Sorry I've been MIA. I worked 2 doubles in the past 3 days and I am worn out lololol. But the good news is working so much leaves little time for eating bad food hahahah.

So last week was the start of my weight loss journey. Well the millionth start but this time I'm taking things more seriously. I weighed in at 199 lbs. Now I want to mention even though this might be an overshare that Aunt Flow came to visit about 2 days later so I probably had a lot of water weight when I weighed in last week but whatever.... so this morning I went and stepped on the scale and I weighed in at 191.6 lbs!!! Yay! That definitely exceeded my goals for the first week. I was hoping for 2 lbs.

Now mind you I probably did have a lot of water weight but I'm thinking at most I had like 3 lbs of water? So that still means I lost like 5ish lbs genuinely lolol. Anywhoo the real test will be the next week since I won't have anything skewing my numbers. But hooray for week 1!!!

Hey Nadia! Well done on the weight loss - the first couple of weeks are usually pretty good as you drop quite a few pounds - I'm jealous!! I have had to fight my way tooth and nail throught the 190s - felt like I clawed through there pound by pound! Although, I did drop from 238 - 220 like I was just taking off heavy clothes each day!

I can see that the work situation is difficult to control - why not ask the chef to do you smaller portions without any sauce/butter on or to load up the veg but down the main or carbs on your plate (if you have no self-control like me....), alternatively just eat half of whatever gets served up to you? Keep a bag of raw carrots or some other healthy snack in your locker incase whatever it is for dinner is pretty unhealthy and you only want to eat a bit of it.

On the plus side, you must get lots of exercise walking up and down and carry stuff to tables @D Certainly on your feet all day!

Thanks jjjay! At work they put out food and each person grabs a plate and it's kinda buffet style so I can choose how much I want to eat and if I don't want something I just don't take it. I've also started bringing cereal to work so if it's a bad option that night I'll just grab a bowl and some skim milk and have that instead.

This week my friend and I are doing a no bread challenge. So we'll see how it goes lololol! I love me some bread.. Sigh. Gotta make sacrifices haha.

Hey, just stumbled on your diary today. Our weight loss goals are pretty close. I was 20 pounds heavier than you when I started, but I hope to get down to about 135 eventually. (The 150 in my ticker is my official goal, and I'll see what happens from there)

Sounds like you are going about this the right way, so good luck on that! Yeah, week one is usually pretty good. I lost nearly 5 pounds. Now I seem to be in a sort of plateau, so the loss has gotten much slower.

Anyway, I basically just wanted to pop in and say "hi and welcome." ^_^
