wrist not fully healed from fracture - ok to lift?

I've been out from lifting for 2 months now due to a fractured scaphoid bone from biking. (It's a bone located just in front of the wrist almost inbetween the thumb and index finger, and has a poor blood supply so takes awhile to heal).

Anyway I just came out of cast today but the doctor told me I should be careful with it for another month because it isn't fully healed yet. (He said no heavy lifting! :( )

I was wondering...is it possible for me to do more damage to it by lifting weights before it is fully healed? In my mind I see fractures as being caused by sudden impacts, not strain on muscles. So if anyone here is knowledgable with things like this, then I would like some educated opinions on whether I can start weights again or not. Thanks.

Oh yeah, let it rest for a while longer. You can easily hurt it even worse. The cast being removed means that it is capable of supporting itself, but it is still fragile.

There are other things you can do. Such as working the legs, and cardio.

You can't exactly argue against the doctor here. He makes $200,000 annually for a reason you know.

=P

I've had several fractures from lifting alone, the doctor called them stress fractures. I'd imagine if you were to lift heavy enough you could completely fracture it, or even compound fracture it if you were to lift heavy enough. I'd wait it out, if you hurt it more you're out for even longer.

$200K annually?...must be a nurse or an intern. Most docs in my area make about $200K a quarter.

But, I'd agree. Don't push it, or you'll be back in that cast.

I think that says it all.
