Would this work?

I was reading an article on bodybuilding.com aboutone of thebig name body builders and he was restating what I already knew,muscle failure leads tomuscle growth. In their interview with him he said aim for muscle failure and suggested doing sets until muscle failure was reached, which got me wondering what would happen if I did my sets until muscle failure instead of to a specific number. Say 3 sets of X until muscle failure take a 30-60 second break and do it again. I was wondering if there have been any studies on this, or if you guys(or girls) could provide any insight. Thanks in advance.
 
Thats what I do. Except, I do 5 sets and X reps (x=until muscle failure). Usually, i want the muscle failure to be at about 4-20 reps depending on the exercise.
 
thats what I do too. my X reps are aimed for around 10 for each exercise, and I rest for about 60 seconds between each set and then reduce the weight so that failure still occurs on the 10th rep (accounting for muscle fatigue).
