Working out while sick

hey guys. this part of the board seems to get the most traffic, so i thought i'd post here. anyway.....what are your thoughts about working out while you're sick? i have heard the "sweat it out" theory. but just the thought of going while i'm sick isn't too appealing. nor do i think i should pass my head cold around the gym via equipment. thoughts?

Depends on what kind of sick - if you're sick with something contageous - stay home! Be respectful of your fellow lifters. If it is not contageous and your not too sick - go work out.

Agreed with McCarley...somewhat. Stay home if you are contagious...definately.

I still do work out when I get sick, but you make less gains those days because you body is physically weaker. I just do it to keep the routine up.

The "sweating it out" mentality is garbage. The body gets better with rest not stress. Working out while being sick is more like "biting the bullet"...it is putting your body in one sort of stress to forget about the other.

Depends on how sick too. If you have a little head cold, go workout. If you have a hacking, phlegm filled cough, I'd take an extra rest day.
If you have the flu, obviously take a couple days off. Intense training can be hard on the immune system, which is already comprimised when you're sick.

It kinda depends on how well you feel and how well you usually cope with your colds, I guess... when I got a cold, I usually got it for like two or three weeks, and cough all the time and have to blow my nose every minute - not ideal conditions for working out. When I do work out at that time (**** being sick ! I wanna work out !) it usually gets worse... like malkore said: training is hard on the immune system - your body is using it's supplies & energy to rebuild sick cells and fight the disease... if you feel pretty week from your sickness, your body will likely not rebuild muscles (let alone make em grow), but try to use its supplies to keep away the disease :p

But I do think that most people with a usual cold won't be bothered by it a lot and can just train ahead...
