working out while sick

Hello. Back in high school I used to pray to get sick so that I could get out of work...but now that Im getting back into shape, its my worst nightmare. Ive been going to the gym 5-6 times a week for almost a month now and the compliments ive been getting are great for reinforcing my being there. In addition to lifting weights, I also try to run 3-4 miles a day for weight loss. My problem is that Ive been getting progressively sicker as the weeks worn on, and I was wondering if I should try to muscle through my workouts tomorrow or if maybe there were alternate ones I could do. Today was my off day (from lifting and diet) so ofcourse I feel like a bum and desperatly want to atleast run tomorrow. Is this reasonable, or will it just mess me up even more? Also, Ive heared that saunas can drain you of all the congestion if you stay in for a while, truth? Thanks

You've been sick for weeks...?

And you're getting worse?

I would go to the doctor and stop working out.

It's one thing to ignore a cold for a while and not use it as an excuse not to work out, but otherwise you should avoid physical activity while sick. It lowers your immune system (working out hard), dehydrates you, and forces your body to recover from the physical stress as opposed to.. fighting virii or whatever the problem is.

I thought you meant you were overtraining until I read 'congestion'. So, I'll wait for you to clarify what's actually going on.

I love working out when sick, I wasn't so sick I was puking or anything, but I love pushing my body. If I have trouble breathing due to being stuff'd up, it'll make me feel better once I start to break a sweat. If you go to a gym, sit in a steam room or sauna for a while sweat it out, it'll clear a lot of air ways up. Make sure you are getting enough vitamins, even though once your sick it doesn't help to take Vitamin C but Its a good idea anyways because it'll help you once to start to get better. Also make sure you are getting enough sleep, and quite possibly to help you get better quicker, take more days off, either combine 2 days into one and then take a day off. Even though you are taking the day off don't feel "like a bum" eat good and do everything like normal just take it easy. If all else fails, go see the doc.

ive always tought it was bad to workout while sick, that you might get more sick or get sick faster if you just got something brewing.

so if im sick i can work out and it will be good for me?

sorry Muck, that meant to say that as the week (singular) has worn on, ive been getting worse. It just stated out as a stuffed nose and sore throat and now its just a total head cold. Its nothing serious, just really an inconvienence. There isnt any nausea or upset stomach, just coughing up nasty stuff, being congested, headaches, etc. I live in Cleveland and this winter has been a real rollercoaster ; cold one day and warm the next, so the change of weather must have gotten to me. I just wanted to know what you guys do when youre sick to keep on track, or if I should relax. Im going to take today off too, not just for me to get better but I doubt the other people at the gym want me to spread it to them. Thanks.

I just got over being sick for a week from a virus. I took the whole week off from the gym because of how I felt. I tried to keep my diet in check but there were a few times that I fell off. The weather has been the same here in CT where I live. Last week we had a 60 degree day and this week is going to be in the 30's.

It really sucks being sick and trying to diet/train as if you were ok, so I know how it feels bro. Just try to do the best you can do and if you don't feel like you can make it to the gym then take time off to get better. The quicker you get better, the quicker you will be able to get back to the gym and hit it hard!

I hope you feel better man.
