Won't get married until I lose weight!

Hi everyone,

I just found this forum tonight and really found it inspiring. So I thought I'd join tonight and start my diet and fitness routine tomorrow.

I've been engaged for over a year but I don't want to get married until I'm in tip-top shape and at my goal weight. Most of the time I don't feel comfortable being naked or in my underthings around even my fiance because I feel so ashamed of my body. When I met him I was much thinner, but two years before I met him I was in the best shape of my life.

Dieting is hard for me because I live with three people who eat whatever they want all the time... regardless of what time it is or how many calories it has. It's very hard and my will power has proved to be very lame and weak. I want that to change and I want this forum to be my inspiration! I used to look forward to working out but now, since I am much bigger, I find it harder and I get a look of myself in the mirror and feel ugly and discouraged.

How does everyone in here stay motivated? As long as I can stay motivated, I think I'll be okay!

I am 5'9", 165 lbs, 22 years old.

My goal weight is 145 lbs.

Looking forward to talking to new people! Thanks for reading and I'd be happy to hear any words of encouragement or wisdom :)

You can do it!

Living with people who eat all the time can be frustrating...try to keep healthy snacks around, like cherry tomatos, cucumber, non-fat crackers with non-fat toppings and icelollys.

I've simply stopped buying unhealthy foods, cause if it's in the house, I will eat it.

Also you can try putting up a photograph of you ideal-weight-time so you see it every day, preferably next to the mirror. I actually have a design for my next tattoo up, which I will get when I reach my ideal weight, so that's a different type of reward! Just reward yourself with other things than eating...watching a movie, making time to read your favourite book, calling with friends for hours, going to your favourite spot outdoors or...anything but food :)

Welcome to the forum!

In order for me to stay motivated, I have a goal outfit in mind which I bought and hung up in my room..I try it on every 2 weeks or so and it really gives me extra motivation to see pants that started out from not even going up past my knees to almost buttoning up!! Trying on clothes is also good for when the scale is not budging, but your losing inches.

Hope that helps, good luck on your journey:)

There's something in your initial post that struck a chord with me -

at the same time a buddy sent me an email with the much better words than I would use...

READ THIS VERY SLOWLY... IT'S PRETTY PROFOUND. >
Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they
haven't thought about it, don't have it on their schedule, didn't know it
was coming or are too rigid to depart from their routine.

I got to thinking one day about all those people on the Titanic who
passed up dessert at dinner that fateful night in an effort to cut back.
From then on, I've tried to be a little more flexible.
How many women out there will eat at home because their husband didn't
suggest going out to dinner until after something had been thawed? Does
the word "refrigeration" mean nothing to you?

How often have your kids dropped in to talk and sat in silence while you
watched 'Jeopardy' on television?

I cannot count the times I called my sister and said, "How about going to
lunch in a half hour?" She would gas up and stammer, "I can't. I have
clothes on the line. My hair is dirty. I wish I had known yesterday, I
had a late breakfast, It looks like rain" And my personal favorite:
"It's Monday." She died a few years ago. We never did have lunch
together.

Because Americans cram so much into their lives, we tend to schedule our
headaches.. We live on a sparse diet of promises we make to ourselves
when all the conditions are perfect!

We'll go back and visit the grandparents when we get Steve
toilet-trained. We'll entertain when we replace the living-room carpet..
We'll go on a second honeymoon when we get two more kids out of college.

Life has a way of accelerating as we get older. The days get shorter,
and the list of promises to ourselves gets longer. One morning, we
awaken, and all we have to show for our lives is a litany of "I'm going
to," "I plan on," and "Someday, when things are settled down a bit."

When anyone calls my 'seize the moment' friend, she is open to adventure
and available for trips. She keeps an open mind on new ideas. Her
enthusiasm for life is contagious. You talk with her for five minutes,
and you're ready to trade your bad feet for a pair of Roller blades and
skip an elevator for a bungee cord.

My lips have not touched ice cream in 10 years. I love ice cream. It's
just that I might as well apply it directly to my stomach with a spatula
and eliminate the digestive process. The other day, I stopped the car
and bought a triple-decker. If my car had hit an iceberg on the way
home, I would have died happy.

Now...go on and have a nice day. Do something you WANT to ... not
something on your SHOULD DO list. If you were going to die soon and had
only one phone call you could make, who would you call and what would you
say? And why are you waiting?

Make sure you read this to the end; you will understand why I sent this
to you.

Have you ever watched kids playing on a merry go round or listened to the
rain lapping on the ground? Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight
or gazed at the sun into the fading night? Do you run through each day
on the fly? When you ask "How are you?" Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done, do you lie in your bed with the next hundred chores
running through your head? Ever told your child, "We'll do it tomorrow."
And in your haste, not see his sorrow? Ever lost touch? Let a good
friendship die? Just call to say "Hi"?

When you worry and hurry through your day, it is like an unopened
gift...Thrown away.... Life is not a race . Take it slower. Hear the
music before the song is over.

"Life may not be the party we hoped for... but while we are here we
might as well dance

Basically - don't wait until you're at your goal weight before you decide to get married - your fiance loves you for who you are now - not for the person you'd like to look like...

At 5'9" and 165lbs, I'm sure you're looking pretty good already.

Are you really sure its your weight that has you putting your wedding on hold or are you just not ready to get married? Only reason I throw that question out there is because I had a friend who was doing the same thing. Eventually she decided it had nothing to do with how much she weighed and everything to do with not feeling ready to be married.

As for motivation, I would think your wedding day should be enough. Have you picked out a dress?

Slow and steady wins the weightloss race.

Thank you for caring :)

Thank you to everyone for replying to me! I know I am new but thank you for reading. Everyone's words mean so much to me..

I am waiting to get married because of my weight. I'm definitely ready to get married, start a new life and all.. I just am completely unhappy with my body.

My weight and the way I look is probably in my mind for 30 out of every 60 seconds, every minute, every day! (Except when I am asleep!) It's torture! So I just want to get fit and stay that way.

Anyone have any good snack ideas that are low calorie and really healthy? I don't like tomatoes but I do like all other veggies!

There are all kinds of snack ideas from unsalted pretzels to cantaloupe and cottage cheese. What really matters with snacks is that they fit into the plan you've set up for what you'll be eating. Have you figured out a total number of calories you should be aiming for each day? (Assuming you're watching your calories... thats what most of us do here.)

- Sunny

I am counting calories! I haven't figured out how many I should be getting each day, though. Is there some sort of calculator for that?

I know my goal weight, pant size and all that.. And today I've done good so far!

How is your day going?

Do you, by any chance, know how to figure out how many calories are in fruit? I eat a lot of fruit and I want to make sure I'm not overdoing it with calories.. and sugar!

-Bride in Waiting

I'm getting married too. The best advice i can give you is to love your body skinnie or fattie, you still you and your future hubbie loves you any way you come! He will still be crying when you walk down that red carpet, be it now or when you fit into a 8...

My day has been great! lol now i am off to apply for a job at the local macca's.... :d hope my will power is strong enough.

Yep, its really easy to figure all this stuff out.
Use google to look up a BMR Calculator (Basic Metabolic Rate). Your BMR is the bare minimum calories your body burns by just being alive. This doesn't include activities or anything of that nature. Its just the bare minimum to sustain life. Then you have to decide what kind of lifestyle you live. There are a few methods of determining you "maintenance" calories off the BMR + lifestyle. You should be able to find all that in google too.

These would be really good things for you to read up on.

As for keeping track of calories in fruits, I'd really recommend that you sign up for a FitDay.com account. Its free and it has just about all the caloric information you could possibly need for basic foods. You can even add custom foods for things like crackers that you get from the store.

Oh, btw.. to lose 1lb of body fat, you have to have a deficit of 3500 calories. For 1lb a week (thats healthy!) you're aiming to have a 500 calorie deficit per day: 7 x 500 = 3500.

If you find that your calories are dropping below 1200, I'd suggest upping it a bit. You don't want to cause your body to think you're starving and refuse to give up its fat.

There's tons of info on google. Be skeptical of everything you read unless it comes from a really reputable source, i.e.: Harvard Medical Journal, WebMD, etc.

Everyone has their own opinions about weight loss!

Read up and you'll do just fine! :D

Food Diary, Day 1... Here we go!

Ahh, today is my official first day of my diet! It feels good to be on the right track and to be getting healthy! (I better not forget this feeling because in a week I'm sure I'll be grumpy and craving something sweet and being healthy won't sound half as good as a treat!) ANYWAY.. Today I've had to eat.. so far..

Breakfast:
Coffee with 3 tbspns sugar free coffee creamer
(No food because I woke up an hour before I had to be at work.. ran out of time!)

Lunch:
Ham sandwich on wheat bread with light mayo, lettuce and cheese
Side salad with light Caesar dressing
Special K Snack Bar

Dinner:
I haven't eaten yet but I am going to steam two small heads of brocculi and put garlic salt and ICBINB spray on it.. Also, will have a small earn of steamed corn on the cob. Sounds yummy!

I'm not so hot with counting calories. I can approximate that breakfast was 45 calories, lunch was 470 calories, and dinner will be... ??? I'm not sure. Anyone have any idea how many calories are in veggies??

I wish everyone else a good day on their diets and working out!! I'm headed to the gym now and will let you all know how dinner goes! I'm pretty hungry already!

-Bride In Waiting

UPDATE:

Just had my dinner :)

2 medium broccoli stalks, boiled, drained with garlic salt and ICBINB spray= 110 calories
1 ear of corn= 170 calories
1 cup strawberry/banana fat free yogurt= 80 calories
Pear, cut up in my yogurt (mmmm!)= 97 calories
Total for dinner= 457 calories

So far, so good :) The veggies tasted quite nice, especially after that work out!

Oh healthy that is really helpful, i might do that myself.

Glad to be of service. I was at the same starting point as Bride is. You learn a lot along the way. Its important to read up as much as you can since there is a lot of information out there.

Feel free to ask me questions at any point. I'm not a professional by any means but I've learned a lot and I'm happy to share. :)

I stole this from another thread because I wanted to make sure you saw it:
I am new to this entire forum, so I am joined the "August Goals" thing quite late. But.. for the last week of August, my goal is to lose 2 lbs and get a new scale! The one I have is six pounds lighter than the one at the Dr's office. You can imagine my devastation!
I hope everyone is having a healthy, happy day!
-Bride in Waiting

Be cautious of believing the number on your scale vs. the number at the doc's office. When we wake up first thing in the morning we tend to be at our "lightest" assuming we haven't had a late night of eating. As the day progresses, we gain weight but its not anything to worry about. When you eat food/drink water/etc, its no different than weighing yourself with rocks in your pockets. Also, clothes and shoes can make around a 3-5lb difference!

I wouldn't be alarmed that your scale said something different than the one at the doc's office unless you weighed yourself fully clothed and then drove directly to the docs office and got weighed without having changed what you were wearing or eating/drinking anything.

A far better measure of how you're doing on weight loss is measuring your size in various places, particularly your trouble areas. When those go down in size, it'll show the real weight loss. Its unfortunate that scales measure everything including food that still needs to be absorbed or passed. :)

Sorry I'm spamming your journal with stuff! Lol.

hey girl, wow, I totally know what it feels like to let your weight keep you waiting for things. I wanted to give you a link because it's what I'm doing and it's really working for me.

physiquetransformation.com

It's allowing me to eat all the time and I'm already down almost two pants sizes. Feel free to check out my "lifestyle transformation" blog. You can do this!! Best of luck!

Exercise Diary, Day 1

Hello all!! :jump:

Today is the first day of my diet/exercise regimen to get healthy and lose weight! I've already posted my food diary for the day (excluding dinner) and now I'm posting my exercise diary cause I just got back from the gym.

Elliptical= 32 minutes, 3.48 miles, 300 calories
Treadmill= 5 minutes, .36 miles, 58 calories
Bike= 10 minutes, 1.5 miles, 70 calories

Then I did... 40 lunges, 50 crunches.. and then today was an arms day (I can't count the set and rep's on arms and legs day.. it gets confusing!)

So by the end of my workout my totals were=
1 hour 10 minutes, 590 calories burned, approximately 5.34 miles

Yahoo! Pretty good start. I went into this workout pushing my hardest, but my knees got pretty tired after the cardio. I am so out of shape! But I feel good. I am about to go steam come broccoli and corn and enjoy my dinner!

Hope everyone is having a fabulous day :)

-Bride In Waiting

Sunny,

You're not spamming, I like to hear all of this!!

I know.. once I first get up in the morning, I'm empty so I'm light. But my fiance weighs himself on our scale, steps off, weighs himself again, and the numbers are different. This doesn't happen to me but since I am trying to lose weight and track it, I don't want to risk anything with a funky scale! We are going to go buy a new one tonight. Yay :)

As for the FitDay.com thing.. I am signing up right now! I love pears and apples but I don't want to over-do it on fruit (cause of the sugar and calories) so this account should be super helpful... thank you for the recommendation!

Hello

Hello Bride In Waiting!

I just thought I'd pop by to say hello, and , boy, your first day and I'd say you've done very well! :D It's always difficult the first few days but it gets easier to work those muscles more with time. The only thing you really must do is keep yourself motivated, and we're here to help you with that too!

Your weight goal is very realistic, really think you can do it. Just curious though, are you going to get married soon ( in reference to your user name) and is this part of the reason why you're making a change for the better?

Yeah, self-control with eating is by far the most difficult thing. Especially when I am on the go and I don't have time to get home and have lunch or dinner on time. I've started getting my veggie servings through V8, but I really must stick to the real veggies!

I'm going to end off by saying, glad to have you here, and drop by my journal any time you feel like! Best of luck with the weight loss!! You can do it!
