Why?

Together?? Seperately?? Rather vague question. Without water or protein, you would cease to exist, so in terms of their effect on your health, I'd rate them pretty high up on the scale :D

Protein - When you lift you should be lifting to failure (can't do any more reps) or close to it so that your muscle makes micro tears. Protein gets digested into amino acids which are essential for growth and repair of the body. So in short, these amino acids repair the muscle tears and makes it grow. In order for the muscle to tear you need to overload your muscles.

Water - I don't really no the answer to this it's just one of the things that i do because people say to do it. I'm just sorta guessing here but your muscles are something like 80% water and even if you don't workout water is very important.

Water helps export waste material generated within the body, specifically in this case, the muscles. This will help prevent, and I'm assuming here; soreness, injury, and fatigue. Water will promote better performance, better health, less dryness in the mouth, and eventually, better success with women.
