When to workout

Ive been wondering lately about when to workout and how to workout properly.
For example, how often are you supposed to max out, and how often are you supposed to go higher reps?(what might be a good plan to follow) When are you supposed to take a break from lifting completely? Also, when you come back from a break, are you supposed to go straight into maxing out, or gruadually get there again? wow quite a few questions anyways thanks:)
 
That is a lot.

Workout whenever you have time and it works with your schedule.

Reps depends on goals.

Break every 2-3 months.

No sense in maxing out often, I don't know if theres a set time period, but a true maxing out (as in 1 rm) should not be more than once a month, just my opinion.

I think you should work up to it, the week back...just follow a basic plan that you hopefully already have set out.
 
guess i should be a little more clearer.
i meant doing <6 reps as maxing out & more than that as higher reps. id like to train evenly for strength and mass or w/e if thats what you mean. and one extra comment...how long should it be inbetween each workout of the same muscle group to prevent overtraining?
