When Is Best Time of Day to Weigh?

Hello! I was wondering if any of you guys had advice as to what time of day does one weigh to give the most accurate results? :) I weighed last night and then again very 1st thing right out of bed this morning, and was a little over 5 lbs heavier! I knew that there are fluctuations, but jeez! Any advice??????

1st thing when you wake up, after you have visited the bathroom.

Note that water is heavy. This is where the metric system comes in handy...
1 Ltr = 1Kg

Lets just say that you wake up, have a glass of water and milk with cerial and you dont use the toilet... Your going to weight up to 3lbs diffrent in just 20mins.

Think about your situation, if you weighed yourself last night after you had your last meal, and then again the first thing the next morning, how would you have possibly gained weight? Its physically impossible. I'd say do as suggested above and ditch your scale, sure it fluctuates but 5lbs overnight? I am ALWAYS lighter in the morning so maybe its more like 6-7 lbs off.

Get a better scale.

I weighed 187.6 lbs last night, and 185.4 lbs this morning, about 10 hours later.

If you wanna get a reasonably accurate weigh-in, do it first thing in the morning, after you use the toilet, before you drink or eat anything (as to avoid weighing the undigested food, and water weight). And of course, do it naked.

even then, its normal for weight to fluctuate several pounds from day to day due to water intake, constipation (or the opposite...mud butt), too much sodium intake, or even a 'loading phase' of creatine (extra water retention).

hence I only weigh in once every week, sometimes only every two weeks if my diet has been rock solid.

plus, without a good bodyfat test, you don't really know what kind of weight it is you're losing or gaining. water, fat, muscle?

Another way you can do it is to weight yourself every morning and record weight. Ignor results till the end of the week and find the average.

I dont see the point in looking closely at your weight every day, but week to week will give you a better view of your progress. and psycologicaly its less stressful if you are worried about the numbers.

But as malkore said, your better of checking your bodyfat%, as you cant tell whats muscle, fat or water from scales.

I guess I am freaking out for no reason- I have gained like, 25 pounds due to stress last year & I am going to try to get it off now. I plan on cardio/ weight lifting routine. I domn't wnat to bulk, don't think I cna much as a woman, just need to get my metabolism working correctly again. Any suggestions as to do I need to lift each muscle group daily, and just alternate days, like monday, wednesday friday, or do I need to focus my efforts each day on a different body part? I tend to gain muscle very quickly & don't want to look horrible. Got to get from 145 to 120 ( my normal weight). Any suggestions?

If you're just starting out I'd suggest doing a full body weight routine 2-3 days a week. Look around the forum, there should be a bunch.

Aim for mostly compound movements, bench press, squats, deadlifts, etc.

theposhpea, here are my favorite tips to get started...

1) Eat 5-6 small meals throughout the day. Each meal should be 2-3 hours apart. Each meal should contain one protein and one carb. The first meal should be eaten within an hour after waking.

2) Drink a cup of water at each meal.

3) Rest properly. This means taking at least 48 hours between strength training the same muscles, and it also means getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Lastly, it means taking 1-2 days off from exercising per week.

4) Cardio. This should be done at different intensity levels and different session lengths. Consider doing a low intensity/long session, a high intensity/short session and a few medium intensity/medium length sessions.

5) Strength Training. Strength train each muscle 1-3 times per week. You should lift a proper weight and perform the proper amount of sets/reps for your strength training method. If you need more guidance or exercise ideas please PM me.

All of the above things combined will result in fat loss.

Thanks, I greatly appreciate your help. I will start tonight. I will let you know how this works out. Thank you again! :)
