usually the truth works best for me - becuase m y memory sucks -but for this obligation event I have to attend on sunday - a simple, no thanks i don't want to - won't cut it and the brady bunch excuse of something suddenly came up - won't work either unless of course there's a cute boy in my presence and that does indeed happen..

What's your best excuse for getting out of something?
 
Well, sometimes I'm a bad mom and I use my kids as an excuse. But I guess you can't do that. :rolleyes:

I'd pick illness. Other excuses (like another committment) they might take to mean ' I have something better to do ' , but an illness has nothing to do with them, kwim?
 
For me it depends on the thing I have to get out of. Unfortunately, I'm a bit of a chronic liar - but I've been working on cutting it down lately.

Is there something you do regularly that might be "rescheduled" for your Sunday obligation? For events on Saturday that I don't want to attend my horse riding lesson is unfortunately rescheduled for the exact time of the event.

If not, my favorite standard is car trouble. "I was just getting in the car to come and noticed a flat tire!"

Maybe a cousin is being baptized? Mom's birthday? Your dog is sick and you need to go to the vet? Your sister locked herself out of the house and needs you to bring an extra key? You accidentally overslept?

If they do, you can say, "I've blocked out some time for myself at that time... sorry."
 
I tend to say 'family reasons' and leave it at that.

If I say it slowly enough, they will feel bad and not ask anything else
 
· The cat unplugged my alarm clock
· I was arrested as a result of mistaken identity.
· My curlers burned my hair and I had to go to the hairdresser
· A tree fell on my car
 
my excuse for getting out of breakfast was that I had a training walk scheduled that I totally forgot about -which was the truth actually - but it turns out the person who was supposed to meet me for the training walk blew me off :) which actually made me happy that i could walk alone...

I did meet them later at the zoo - which was OK much better than meeting up for brunch.. at least i didnt have to have social conversations i coud talk about the beasties in the zoo
 
Sounds like an excellent way to handle it!

And, I love walking alone. I don't like feeling the need to talk to anyone.
Occasionally (very occasionally) it's ok.

the truth has always worked for me... if i don't want to do something - i don't want to do it and i don't :) with age comes a certain amount of expected grumpiness :)

I get headaches freqently but its never stopped me from doing anything :)
 
Something really unusual is good, one time my friend said her dog was havign puppies :p that was a good one. Although she's a bit of a pathological liar, one time she told people her brother had been stabbed in the head, to get off work :S

but really stupid things work better cause ppl don't expect you to lie aobut them.
