What should i do?

I'm currently doing westside for skinny bastards part 1 and for the max effort lift on mondays i'd like to do dips but i don't have a dipping station. What could i do instead because i heard that dip are a great exercise and i want to do something different to bench press?

Also are there two parts of the triceps that are worked seperately or is both sides worked at the same time?

you can do military press instead of dips, but i like dips more.
it is a different lift though...it doesnt work the chest. only substitute it if you need a verticle press.

there are 3 heads to the tricep but they all get worked at the same time

as for the dips, all you need is parallel bars

I use 2 chairs to dip, there are plenty of exercises with equipment you can use from around the house

just gotta think and be creative.

I would not use dips as a max effort exercise, it would be better used as an assistance exercise.

You could do the overhead press, incline press, floor press, a press off of pins from your sticking point as other max effort exercises.

Also are there two parts of the triceps that are worked seperately or is both sides worked at the same time?

There are three heads to the triceps. They are all generally worked together. You can target the long head of the triceps a little differently since it crosses the shoulder joint and is an extender of the shoulder as well as the elbow.

Doing exercises using both elbow and shoulder extension will train the long head of the triceps more.

Doing exercises that limit the movement to extension of the elbow joint will train the long head less. There are some arguments that doing an exercise this way will target the 2 shorter heads of the triceps more. Though there are good arguments on both sides.

All of the triceps are trained using each of the above methods, the above are just ways to train them a little differently.

yeah, agree.. I wouldn't do ME with dips. the exercise is just too.. "assistance like" :p Besides, it's an exercise where you will typically start limiting ROM when you put on alot of weight, and besides, dips with tons of weight = worse form = shoulder injury.

Thanks for all the advice. i don't think i'll feel comfortable doing dips on two chairs (too unstable) but will it really effect me if i don't do dips?

Also thanks for the response about triceps, i thought that they must be worked at the same time because I hadnt heard anything about it before.
