What does Nitric Oxide actually do?

I know it's a vasodilator, but does it actually benefit the body, other than feeling cool because of the "pump"? Thanks!

It also helps empty your wallet.

Hi CowTR,

You're correct that NO is a vasodialator. What that means is that it helps your blood vessels to temporarily relax, which in turn allows more blood and oxygen into the muscle. Your muscles need that oxygenated blood flow in order to keep working, so in theory NO may have the effect of allowing you to workout for a longer period of time in addition to giving you that "pumped" feeling. How much that translates to actual gains in strength and size, however, I don't know.

Yeah Jeremy, that' is the theory, which has never been proven by any of the scientific studies.

NO2 does give you a hell of an erection though.

Hi, yeah nitric oxide is a vasodilator, and its main use is in angina and cardiovascular diseases. Never read of it being used for health gains/buiding muscles etc. And for erection, viagra contains sildenafil, which inhibits the enzyme which degrade nitric oxide thus increasing duration of action of available nitric oxide on veins in penis leading to prolonged ercetion.

and BTW nitric oxide is NO not NO2.

:)

fun fact: we can produce NO when we hold in a deep breath.
When I learnt that I understood why I've always enjoyed holding in a deep breath. Usually for stress relief.
