Weight Training all thats needed to lose weight?

Guys I need serious accurate information on this subject. I'm 21 years old 240 pounds 6ft tall. And want to lose weight and do some strength training. My friend who is in good shape himself and has a six pack ect. Has told me That i'm wasting my time with cardio and watching what I eat.

He says I should just lift weights. Hardcore follow this plan . That i'd be down to 200 pounds and have tons of muscle within 2 months. I'm not the smartest guy when it comes to this stuff, but even so i've been reading this forum a lot and think I have a general idea. He says the muscle I build will burn my fat off. And that I can turn my fat into muscle.

My friend is pissed at me that I'm not taking his advice. he thinks I don't trust him. I don't want to lose him as a friend over something stupid like this. I just don't know what to do. So please can you post advice. And also leave your creditials if your personal trainers or what not so he knows you guys no what your talking about.

Thanks much appreciated

What he doesen't realize is that what works for him, may not work for everyone. He probably has good genes if he does not have to watch what he eats and still has a six pack. He is right to say that weight training is the most important aspect of losing weight. However some cardio and a good diet plan will accelerate your results a great deal. 2 months is not a reasonable amout of time to lose 40 lbs and gain "tons of muscle".

Take his advice about what exercises to do, if he is in great shape, then he is doing something right in the gym. But don't stop there, add some cardio, and do some research on nutrition, there is a lot of great info within this forum, all you need to do is look.

I am an athletic therapist, a nutritionist, and and a competitive athlete for over 15 years. If he has any doubt that what I am saying is true.

You are losing weight for you not your friend. When it comes to your health and happiness don't let someones whining ego halt any of your efforts.
So if he can't be your friend because of something as stupid as him not knowing what he is talking about then hey let him go.

I am not a professional but i am sure some on here where answer you questions but i can tell you in short that yes diet and cardio are important.

Read the winning formula part 1 and 2 on johnberardi.com. You need to include weight training and energy systems work to get lean.

Thanks for the replys. I'm going to stick with weight training 3 times a week and cardio 5 times a week or so.
