Weezy's Diary - basic regime

This is my first post here. I joined this forum with the hope of learning something new about losing flab, and to share positive experiences and neat recipes with the group.

In winter of 2003 I made the huge mistake of looking in the mirror while wearing glasses. I didn't like what I saw. I also didn't like the wardrobe full of over sized tee shirts and "big" jeans.

Here I was, 62 years old, 5 ' 3.5 " and weighing in at 145 lbs. Losing hair at the temples, hair colour almost white. Diagnosed with Osteo, and suffering from ManiccDepression. Feeling horrible, no energy, depressed at physical situation, really annoyed at how old age suddenly seemed to have crept up so suddenly.

I'm a songwriter, and in that same winter of 2003, I decided to enter my name in a lottery for an appearance at a jazz Festival. To my complete shock, my name was drawn.

I decided that if I was going to be on stage in front of a wack of people, I was darn well going to improve my physical image.

My local Health food and supplement store has a vast supply of herbal and other supplements. I conferred with them and we decided that I needed a quick "boost" to get me going. I picked Xenadrine (I really like the pix of the lady with the ultra flat abs in their ads).

At the same time, I had been reorganizing my diet to help battle the osteo. The exclusion of refined white sugar, cafein, and bleached flour, and all processed foods was a really good start. (at time of writing, the Osteo has regressed)

However, for a number of years I had been avoiding protein in the form of red meat and chicken because of the unhealthy ways in which many of these products are processed, and the fact that hormones and antibiotics and rendered animal parts are included in the diets of these animals.

It turns out I was way low on protein.

My friends at the health store recommended adding SoyOne into my diet as a supplement.

They suggested a weight bearing exercise routine twice a week......because of scheduling problems, I opeted for a short (15 minutes) workout with Theraband - every day.

So, with all that info under my belt, starting January of 2003, I began an agressive campaign to lose 2.5 lbs per week until the Jazz Festival in May.

It was like pulling teeth ... however by May 1st I had managed to lose 12 lbs. Not my goal, but at least I was losing.

Unfortunately, now I was off the Xenadrine (3 months on, 3 months off).

I realized that I had a lot more work.

It was drawn to my attention that drinking only 4 glasses of water/day was very low and that I needed to increase.

I increased gradually to between 8 to 12 glasses.

I disliked the flavour of the SoyOne (and various other protein supplements). I found that in beverage form they made me gag.

I added in high protein bars to get me through the times when I would be forced to miss lunch or a mid morning/afternoon snack. These worked, but I am not a sweet person, so I really had trouble getting them down.

I had stopped checking the scale, since now my goal was to build muscle and lose fat. What I now noticed was that clothes from January 2003 where falling off and I had the great pleasure of buying waist size 29 at my favorite store.

In August 2003 I went shopping and found that large size tees and even medium were too big and size 29 waist was too big. I tried 28" - too big, 27" - too big, finally - 26"!!!! I was really excited. I treated myself to 3 new size SMALL tees and 2 pairs of 26" waist jeans....

In December 2003 I stepped on the scale with the cat in order to get her weight recorded. When I stepped back without the cat and substracted my weight without her against my weight with her I was sitting at 122lbs!

December and January were incredibly stressful for me because we moved to a new house and I coordinated the whole process....I got a lot of carb cravings, but I tried to curb them with proteins snack bars and (wait for it!) my latest way to disguise that soy protein!

Using Diet jello, I disolved a packet of raspberry flavoured jello in 1/2 cup of boling water.

I added 8 icecubes and stirred until the icecubes were nearly melted and the jello was starting to set.

I set my electric beater to low and beat the jello until it was really frothy and full of nice airbubbles.

I then folded in a scoop of soy protein, which I blended in with the beater and continued to beat until the bubbles returned..

I put the jello/soy mix in the fridge, where it set in a couple of hours and, voila! Jello Protein Boost. Most of the soy sensation was disguised and I had a quick easy soy snack.

Muscles are building slowly, I don't have that "6-pack" all the darn body builders have - YET - but I'm working on it. I have a 2 pack at present (Feb 2004).

My biggest challenge is going to be to lose the flab in the ab area from years of accumulated fat stretching the skin. Any suggestions will be very welcome.

Cheers

I posted but it never showed up

Why did my post to this forum never show up? You don't like Canadians or something?

HI Weezy,

I am sorry that your post never showed up. Personally I love Canada and Canadians, so no problem there. I will contact our tech department and ask them if there is anything that I should put in the welcome message as to time or size. Once I figured out what happened - if I can - I will post it here.
I do hope that you will try and start a diary again, once we know what happened and how to prevent it.

Hi Lisa:

thanks for responding......I checked the number of characters and it was way below the limit.....what is particularly irritating is that it was a really long post, chronicaling a year of fat battling.

I did mention a couple of brand names in the post and afterwards wondered if that was a problem. :) I don't represent any of these products, I just use them and was curious to see if anyone else used them also....

If I had been smart, I would have saved the message as a text file....

I should have inserted a smiley after my smart crack about Canadians. Since the Iraq thing and all the dumb things our previous PrimeMinister said about Americans, Canadians feel kinda uncomfortable.

Well, I'm off to have another one of my "delightful" protein boosts to get me through til dinner. a 1/2 scoop of soy protein, a tablespoon of crunchy peanut butter (unsalted) and two tablespoons of unsweetened juice. Mixed up briskly. Yum:eek:

Hi Weezy,
Unfortunately, I have no idea why the post never showed up. If there was a character length problem, the board would notify you and wouldn't let you post. The only thing that I can think of is that you accidentally clicked on the wrong link. I have run quite a few of these boards and that generally is what happens.

Sincerely,
AllCdnBoy

wow, someone sure went through a lot of trouble setting this up...Should I worry that my eye always seemed to stop scanning when it came to cake, pie or ice-cream:rolleyes:

Weezy's Diary - basic regime

Okay, I'm a lazy person, but my routine is pretty much the same every day, the water may increase depending on my acitivities and proximity to a wash room (L.O.L.)here goes:

Before shower and breakfast :
5 special in-bed stretches
7 Tai Chi compatible stretches upon rising
Feed the pets
Glass of water. and get out the days vitemins and supplements

Breakfast:
2/3 glass water 1/3 juice
1/2 cup mixed, dried fruits (pre-soaked in juice)
1/4 cup all bran cereal
1 tablespoon lecithin granules
1Tbs Wheat Germ
! Tbs milled flax seed
1 Scoop protein powder
Juice to moisten above.
1 hard boiled egg
1 slice 9-grains bread toasted and buttered lightly.
Additional glass of juice/water mix

Glass of water 1 hour after breakfast
Mid Morning snack:
1 apple
1 Raspberry chocolate zonebar
2 glasses water

Pre lunch
Glass of water

Lunch:
1 slice 9-grains bread toasted
Topping: 1 of either sardines, tuna, salmon or peanut butter and a big piece of lettuce (or 2)
2 glasses of water and vitemins.

Mid afternoon snack
Zonebar and 2 glasses of water

Pre dinner
glass of water

Dinner

1 glass of freshly juiced carrots, apples and celery and the juice of 1/2 a pink grapefurit.

1 serving of either: meat or fish with vegetables and/or salad. 1/2 cup brown rice.

glass of water.

mid evening
2 glasses of water

bedtime snack 1 serving of either:

protein powder and just enough juice to make a thick cream
or a zonebar
or a third of a protein bar
glass of water

That's basically my daily routine. The only changes would be choice of dinner protein. If fresh nice fish is available I get fish, and if organic beef is available I get that. If I can get organic chicken then that's a choice. I sometimes get homemade and smoked beef Knockwurst (like huge weiners)

All main courses are served with large amounts of vegetables or Salad. Potatoes or rice are included for the sake of the better half, but I do not usually have any except for brown rice.

Hope everyone is going to have a marvellous weekend!

Weezy's Diary - Sheesh, I forgot the exercises ....

So, onto that daily routine between shower and breakfast I fit in my 10 minutes exercise routine:

20 leg lifts (each leg)
20 knee presses (both are knee strenghtening routines)
80 crunches
80 half sit ups
10 arm curls each arm (with grey theraband)
10 arm curls (with grey theraband)
20 abdominal lifts
20 waist twists (with green theraband)
20 lunges

After breakfast usually take the dog for a power walk for about 1 - 2 miles.

Mid afternoon take the dog for a brisk walk for 1 mile.

then, that's it for me - I'm beat!

HI Weezy,
your routine sounds very good to me:)
Do you really get all this into 10 minutes..you must be well trained then already. That is motivating me greatly because I should be able to get 10 minutes in my day somewhere, right...
Well, I know you are still walking your dog twice a day...I should really take what you do as an example...better I will try to...it sounds more realistic to me then finding the time to go to the gym.

thanks for the encouragement, Lisa.

It took me a while to get a fast routine happeneing. I started out with only 5 reps of each thng and then added on a couple each week/. I sped up because I really had such a little time, I had no choice. Anyhow, I'm hoping that the fast routine will help....

It's not so easy to squeeze in 10 minutes when you have a busy lifestyle. That's one of the reasons why I do it BEFORE brekfast - the motivation to get finished and go eat is pretty strong.

I hate the weekends because mty routine is uisually disrupted by sleeping in ....

Ah yes, walking the dog/ Well it certainly forces one to go out and get some fresh air!. My dog is quite large and needs all the exercise he can get.

I should get a husky and small sled, then he could take ME out for walks ( just joking....):D

cheers

Hi Weezy,

that's actually what seems to be wroking for me as well. I squeeze the little I do in before breakfast. I really enjoy reading your posts. Motivates me a lot to try and eat healthy and exercise. Thank you and please keep it up:)

As for walking hte dog...I just open the door and let her run. She's not that big and we have a field for her to roam right beside the house. Unfortunately that's an easy excuse not to go for a walk...

Had to start back on Xenadrine today ...getting to the time of year when I'm doing a lot of outdoor work and get huge carb cravings, need all the help I can get!

Exercise: - 80 crunches; 30 1/2 sit ups; 40 special leg raises, 40 special knee strengthening presses; 20 isometric abdominal squeezes; 20 waist twists; 20 toe touches, 20 special upper body strengthening moves with gray theraband, 20 special wrist and shoulder strengtheing moves with gray theraband. 20 abdominal lifts.

Breakfast: allbran, fruit, whey protein, water, water, water

snack: zonebar, apple, water, water

Lunch: 1/2 meal replacement protein bar, rice cake and cheese, water, Xenadrine, water

snack: other 1/2 protein bar, water.

Dinner:water, breaded pork schnitzel, lightly cooked celery, 1/4 cup brown rice, water.

Snack: zonebar, 1/2 glass water.

Note: Do not try to toast rice cakes in pop up toaster - mine caught fire with 3 foot flames shooting up...toaster is toast, rice cakes were cinders.

Please see attached pix showing some small improvements from jan to feb.
Not much, but I found an inch smaller on waist and flatter stomach.

Hi Weezy,

your daily routine is very impressive. Keep up the good work:)

I have one question though. I am not familiar at all with all the supplements that are out there. What exactly is Xenadrine and what does it do for you? I was under the impression that when you eat a balanced diet you don't get the cravings (only when you cheat:eek: ). Is that incorrect? Howcome you get the cravings in spring? And last... do you have to change your eating habits, when you take Xenadrine, cause your last posting looked as if you are eating different now - not bad, but different.

Sorry for asking so many questions, but you seem to know so much more than I do:):)

me again...I think I just answered at least one of my questions...I just went back to your first diary post and it doesn't look like you are eating different. I meant nobody eats exactly the same stuff every day, except maybe for breakfast:D.

My understanding about Xenadrine is that it acts as a metaoblism speed up, and helps your body to assimilate nutrients more effectively and helps to curb carb cravings, there probably more to it than that.

For me, the biggest problem is stress. When I get stressed I crave carbs, when I start landscaping, I get stressed, the season is hectic and the clients are all obnoxious.

Doesn't matter HOW well I eat, when stressed, carb cravings. Drives me NUTS

Spring is when all the landscaping clients start whining and fussing, and for landscapers, it's the busiest time of the year.

No, I don't have to change my eating habits with Xenadrine, it's just that I modify things from time to time for a bit of a change. For a while I was snacking on Protein powder but lately I have reverted to Zone bars. :) :) Which I really like but one gets a bit bored with same stuff all the time.

Sorry for asking so many questions, but you seem to know so much more than I do:):)

You are more than welcome to ask as many questions as you like!!!:) And thanks for the compliment. I don't knowm as much as I'd like, I rea a lot and I study a lot. It's important to me that the family stay healthy and the only way I can keep them that way is through proper nutrition..

This weekend- so far - has been awful. I dug up a bunch of trees and bushes yesterday and am stiff from top to toe, everything I eat is giving me gas and acidity and I feel bloated . I have eaten the usual stuff - no change there...... I hope things get more cheery soon......

Cross Weezy

HI Weezy,

sorry about you not feeling so great. Besides my hayfever I enjoy spring very much. I like the longer days and the warmer weather, but for me the job doesn't change with the season.

It is kind of unusual that your system acts up more, when you are working outside...I can understand why your muscles hurt. That is hard work you do.

Hope it'll all adjust and get better soon. Don't give up - you're doing so good and are a motivation to us....can't let that go away:):)

:D Hi Natalie:

thanks for your positive vibes and nice compliments! What nice young lady you are!!!!

I think that the upset stomach and acidity is directly related to the amount of stress I am experiencing. I have been fretting horribly over the garden, feeling that I am not strong enough to get the whole thing done in a timely fashion, so I stress out....Stupid, I know, but I just seem to be a natural "fretter"

Today I heaved more shrubs about, moving stuff from one part of the garden to another to try to improve gridlock.....front garden is beginning to shape up....thank heavens.....

Talk soon!
