Weezy's Diary - basic regime
This is my first post here. I joined this forum with the hope of learning something new about losing flab, and to share positive experiences and neat recipes with the group.
In winter of 2003 I made the huge mistake of looking in the mirror while wearing glasses. I didn't like what I saw. I also didn't like the wardrobe full of over sized tee shirts and "big" jeans.
Here I was, 62 years old, 5 ' 3.5 " and weighing in at 145 lbs. Losing hair at the temples, hair colour almost white. Diagnosed with Osteo, and suffering from ManiccDepression. Feeling horrible, no energy, depressed at physical situation, really annoyed at how old age suddenly seemed to have crept up so suddenly.
I'm a songwriter, and in that same winter of 2003, I decided to enter my name in a lottery for an appearance at a jazz Festival. To my complete shock, my name was drawn.
I decided that if I was going to be on stage in front of a wack of people, I was darn well going to improve my physical image.
My local Health food and supplement store has a vast supply of herbal and other supplements. I conferred with them and we decided that I needed a quick "boost" to get me going. I picked Xenadrine (I really like the pix of the lady with the ultra flat abs in their ads).
At the same time, I had been reorganizing my diet to help battle the osteo. The exclusion of refined white sugar, cafein, and bleached flour, and all processed foods was a really good start. (at time of writing, the Osteo has regressed)
However, for a number of years I had been avoiding protein in the form of red meat and chicken because of the unhealthy ways in which many of these products are processed, and the fact that hormones and antibiotics and rendered animal parts are included in the diets of these animals.
It turns out I was way low on protein.
My friends at the health store recommended adding SoyOne into my diet as a supplement.
They suggested a weight bearing exercise routine twice a week......because of scheduling problems, I opeted for a short (15 minutes) workout with Theraband - every day.
So, with all that info under my belt, starting January of 2003, I began an agressive campaign to lose 2.5 lbs per week until the Jazz Festival in May.
It was like pulling teeth ... however by May 1st I had managed to lose 12 lbs. Not my goal, but at least I was losing.
Unfortunately, now I was off the Xenadrine (3 months on, 3 months off).
I realized that I had a lot more work.
It was drawn to my attention that drinking only 4 glasses of water/day was very low and that I needed to increase.
I increased gradually to between 8 to 12 glasses.
I disliked the flavour of the SoyOne (and various other protein supplements). I found that in beverage form they made me gag.
I added in high protein bars to get me through the times when I would be forced to miss lunch or a mid morning/afternoon snack. These worked, but I am not a sweet person, so I really had trouble getting them down.
I had stopped checking the scale, since now my goal was to build muscle and lose fat. What I now noticed was that clothes from January 2003 where falling off and I had the great pleasure of buying waist size 29 at my favorite store.
In August 2003 I went shopping and found that large size tees and even medium were too big and size 29 waist was too big. I tried 28" - too big, 27" - too big, finally - 26"!!!! I was really excited. I treated myself to 3 new size SMALL tees and 2 pairs of 26" waist jeans....
In December 2003 I stepped on the scale with the cat in order to get her weight recorded. When I stepped back without the cat and substracted my weight without her against my weight with her I was sitting at 122lbs!
December and January were incredibly stressful for me because we moved to a new house and I coordinated the whole process....I got a lot of carb cravings, but I tried to curb them with proteins snack bars and (wait for it!) my latest way to disguise that soy protein!
Using Diet jello, I disolved a packet of raspberry flavoured jello in 1/2 cup of boling water.
I added 8 icecubes and stirred until the icecubes were nearly melted and the jello was starting to set.
I set my electric beater to low and beat the jello until it was really frothy and full of nice airbubbles.
I then folded in a scoop of soy protein, which I blended in with the beater and continued to beat until the bubbles returned..
I put the jello/soy mix in the fridge, where it set in a couple of hours and, voila! Jello Protein Boost. Most of the soy sensation was disguised and I had a quick easy soy snack.
Muscles are building slowly, I don't have that "6-pack" all the darn body builders have - YET - but I'm working on it. I have a 2 pack at present (Feb 2004).
My biggest challenge is going to be to lose the flab in the ab area from years of accumulated fat stretching the skin. Any suggestions will be very welcome.
Cheers
