Txturtlegirl's Diary

Hey, y'all! Thanks for the comments. I haven't been here as much as I should be, but I've been kinda busy. Didn't get to the gym today, overslept, but I'm going to count the fact that I carted a laundry basket full of clothes plus a bottle of laundry detergent all over creation and back as some resistance training. LOL. I swear, if that man of mine doesn't get a new washing machine soon...I'm gonna quit washing his underwear and he can go commando until he gets the picture! LOL. Ours just quit. It fills up, it drains, but it doesn't agitate anymore. He's fixed it several times, and I guess he finally gave up on it. So, I went to the laundromat today and washed a load so that I had undies and scrubs for work tonight. People looked at me weird when I brought home wet clothes. But I'm not about to pay $3.75 to dry clothes there when there's nothing wrong with our dryer!

*sigh* Anybody want to volunteer to do my laundry until he gets a new washer?

Good morning TX:) Sorry about the washer! I live in an apt so I have to go to a laundry mat downstairs and it is such a pain!!! You are doing so well! Your pics are amazing! You look so good! and size 12! I haven't even managed that yet!!:) Congratulations on all your success! Keep up the great work!

I don't want to do my own laundry most days :) I've found that since i've been going to the gym somuch - my wash load has pretty much doulbed - man does that suck :)

I think your hubbie should go commando :) it'd be fun :) til a zipper gets in the way or something :)

I can relate to the bad machine blues.

Mine is too small for my family and goes off balance during almost every wash. I don't really want to spend money on a new one, but when it becomes unavoidable, there will be a big happy smile on the inside of my face.

I hope today is a good one for you - maybe even with some time for aerobic excercise! :)

I tend to get used equipment for things like that; it's cheap, and if it sucks, you just trade it out for a new one.
If you do decide to spring for a new machine, I really like the front loaders, they are a little more expensive, but they are more durable and do a better job on the laundry. It's just my opinion, but I can definitely tell the difference.
Hey, one thing about doing your laundry when you're out and about; you meet lots of "interesting" people ;) Especially in Vegas, I'm sure!

Hahaha! Yeah, I saw some...interesting people. Then again, I see them working at a hospital, too!

We went Saturday and got a new washer. He was going to get another used one, but found a furniture outlet place that had new ones for about $300, so he got a new one. I don't think either of us has owned a new washing machine before. LOL

Went to the gym Monday, but the food has been...well, not as good as I'd like. Oh well. Get back on the horse, right? Tomorrow night is weigh in - I don't expect much. I have a doctor's appointment in the morning - don't expect a good scale visit there, either. LOL. Can't wait for the nurse to tell me "you need to loose weight." Because it's always the nurse that outweighs me by easily 40 pounds or more that says that. And when/if I hear it next, I'm not holding back anymore. I've never said anything before, but I'm going to start telling people they need to loose their own before they talk about mine, and don't judge my weight until you know how much I've lost, dangit! LOL. The last time I was at a doctor's office (been over a year now I guess), the nurse looked at the scale and went "Um hmmm..." and just arched an eyebrow at me. Didn't make me a very happy person. And then she didn't understand why my blood pressure was up. Um...hello? I'm trying not to beat the crap out you, be glad it's just a little up!

Oh well. We'll see how things go. Wish me luck!

Just stopping by to say hello! I hope things are going okay for you!

I've often wondered the whole nurse thing myself; it's always the pleasently "plump" woman who looks double your size that tells you "hunnie, you need to lose weight for your health" well...what about them? Do other, skinnier, doctors sit them down and say the same?

I've never understood the way things work. I've known several dieticians who were severely over weight. Same with nurses. They should know better. Almost all the respiratory therapists I've ever known have smoked. WTH?? They REALLY should know better! Then again, I'm a pharmacy tech who doesn't like pills. Go figure. LOL

I hope you'll stop and think before you decide to start telling people they need to lose weight...after all, you said you know how that feels. As for the nurse who outweighs you, perhaps she too has been losing weight, so you shouldn't judge her.

I am a physician and I am overweight. Should I stop advising weight loss to patients simply because I need to lose weight too? If I did that, I would not be providing my patients proper medical care. When I have an overweight patient I ask them if they've been trying to lose weight, what they've been doing, do they need help, etc. Then I reassure them that I recognize how difficult it can be to take off the pounds, but it won't be an effort they'll regret. Some patients listen and appreciate my advise and encouragement. A few have taken the attitude you suggest, and have said things like "Have you taken your own advice, doc?" I will tell you from experience that those words are hurtful. Do you really want to be hurtful???

I see your point. I do. My issue, I guess, is not so much with WHAT is said, it's with the way it's said. I'm sure that you don't tell patients that they need to loose weight with the attitude that you are better than they are. That's the only way I've ever been told. Nobody has ever given suggestions on how to do it, just made rude comments about it. It's hard not to react defensively after years of that.

I'm sorry if you took offense to what I said. That was not my intention.

No offense taken.

By the way, maybe I can be the first doc to tell you that I am so impressed by your weight loss. You are such a great example to so many and you're doing yourself such a great service. You said in an earlier post that you hate taking medications...just think of all the medications you won't need to be taking in the future because you are losing weight now! You're great.

Thank you.

My aim, short term anyway, is to be able to get off the Ultram and live like a normal person. LOL. Then I'll deal with figuring out what causes the pain.

Good luck with your checkup. :)
Thanks! But I better get my hiney in the shower NOW if I'm going to make it there on time!

The "how" is so much more important than the "what" when it comes to discussing weight loss, especially in a professional environment. I can't tell you how many times I have heard someone say "You should go on a diet" or "Damn, you're a pretty big guy!" or other similar statements in a completely dismissive and insulting manner. Quite often when they are stuffing themselves with a meal I wouldn't eat if you paid me to do it, and in quantities that are pretty darn impressive.
My social circle is pretty good about this now, because they are starting to notice some of the lost size, and they see how I eat now, but every once in awhile, someone will pop off with a wisecrack like they are a championship bodybuilder in comparison to me, and it does annoy and de-motivate when they do it.
When it comes to a doctor's office, I have heard the line a few times, and generally it's only the skinny types that give me any tooth-grinding moments; the heavier-set folks are usually a bit more polite and reinforce the idea more strongly, yet politely. On the other hand, I've never really been ready to make the changes needed until now, so I do sympathize, but occasionally we do need a "kick in the pants" reminder.
If it is your regular doctor, they should be noticing the 25 pound difference on your charts, and ask about it ;)

It wasn't a regular doctor. It was a new patient visit. But, he was very nice. He didn't out right say "Well, duh!" when I complained of too many periods (as opposed to not enough, thank god! LOL) and put me on a mid strength birth control to help get it under control. He said that without some hormonal balance, I could expect that until my weight stabilizes. He did say "get to an ideal weight and stay there," to which I wanted to say "well duh!" but didn't. LOL. I did consider asking them to reweigh me wrapped only in the exam sheet, though. My shoes and jeans are heavy! The shoes alone weigh 2 pounds, not to mention my jeans, which had some change and tissues and air and... LOL.

Sigh. Ok, time to get my butt back in gear. I gain a whole 0.2 this week. Not that I didn't expect it, just wishful thinking I guess. I will go to the gym like I should this week. I will pay more attention to what I eat this week.

hey tx :) you just keep going girl :D

glad to hear you have new washing machine, and that your doctor's appointment went rather well. i hope that hormonal therapy will work. i know it usually does help with stabilizing the periods.

stay strong!
Lena
