tummy troubles

okay im going to bluntly put this out there...my tummy needs help...at least i think so. my arms and legs are thin and toned... but i have that up and down shape. I swear my stomache has celulite in it. i lift and exercise all the time. Is it my food? or what that just wont make a toned tummy.

my diet changes everyday...heres a breakdown of it...

Monday/Wed/Fri- i go to the gym in the morning before breakfast on the elliptical for 2.5 miles...then lift weights
Tuesday/Thursday 6am run and a body pump class at 12
Saturday/Sunday usually a run in the morning about 2-2.5 miles or a power walk with my mom or both.
Sometimes i will run in the evenings or walk on any day of the week.

Breakfast: Nature's Promise Cereal-80 cals. per 1/2 cup. 1/2 banana and strawberries with light soy milk or sugar-free maple brown sugar oatmeal with banana and strawberries. Sometimes a small glass of OJ or prune juice.

Snack: if i get a snack in..it's usually rice cake with peanut butter or sugar free jelly or toast or fruit.

Lunch: PB& J or tuna or smoked turkey breast or a salad or veggie wrap or fruit and cottage cheese

Snack: pretzels or yogurt or animal crackers or luna bars, sugar-free pudding or fruit

Dinner: my mom cooks at home so it can range from grilled chicken with veggies to itilian dishes to broiled haddock and shrimp. We usually always have a vegetable wtih all meals or a side salad.

I drink water no soda. and dessert usually if i have it is frozen yogurt ice cream, cereal, or if my mom makes a special cake or treat. i try to do dessert in moderation but i think this is my weakness and maybe why i feel this way?

since i started lifting which i never really ever did...i think i have gained 3 lbs or so...plus i dont get my period...because of being active.

let me know what you think.

OK, lets start at the begining.

Why are you doing cardio before lifting weight? Weight lifting is much more benificial in the fat-loss battle. You should be doing HIIT after weight lifitng (about 15 minutes total plus warm-up)
Tuesday/Thursday 6am run and a body pump class at 12
Are you eating something before your running? What is body pump class? And already that is TOO MUCH. Pick one or the other. Prefiably just HIIT in the morning, then enjoy the rest of the day.

Where is your day off? You are doing much too much. And again HIIT is the way to go for cardio, 30 sec sprint, 60 recovery, for 6-8 intervals. You can do them on a treadmill, outside, on a bike, get the idea?

Your diet is borderline horrible. Check out JB's Lean Eating article here: John Berardi - Lean Eatin' Part II It will make a world of a diffrence just following those rules in that article.
let me know what you think.

Good info Lara

I would emphasize the nutrition for abs. It's all about losing bodyfat.
Bodypump is cardio....not weight training.
Don't train on an empty stomach.

Get the basics down before you get over complicated

okay thanks for the advice but some quick questions....
why is doing cardio so bad on an empty stomach? i can't run and eat before.

plus body pump is allll weight lifting...it's not cardio. we use a barbell and lay down and do biceps, triceps etc.

is my diet choices making me gain weight?

I am not sure what body pump is, but if you are focusing on your biceps and triceps during it and that is what you consider your resistance training routine, that is not good. If fat loss is your goal, your resistance training regiment must be focused around large, mulit joint/muscle movements like squats, deadlifts, horizontal pulls, horizontal presses, vertical presses, vertical pulls, etc.

Eat 30 minutes before you run. It is better to eat before to give you more energy and have a more intense workout.

It has been shown that NOT eating before exersice does nothing to help burn more fat. If anything it makes you hungrier for the rest of the day.

Body pump also involves.. squats...lunges..presses etc. it's an entire body weight lifting class. i was just giving those things as examples in my earlier post...sorry for the confusion.

any suggusts to fix my "almost horrible"diet?

Body pump involves too many reps with a light weight. You'd be better off lifting heavy and doing 8-10 reps only. Fewer reps are always preferable for weight loss.

Anytime you have a smiley bushy tailed aerobic instructor giving you half butt instructions on how to move through closed chain movements WHILE Ace of Base "I Saw the Sign" booms in the background....... you're doing cardio....and that's about it.
