Trops Diary

Thanks. I'm ready. I still have a lot of catching op on things from being away for just one week. Also with it being summer there is a lot of shifts to cover at work for other's vacations. I have three extra shifts so far this week, and the kids don't have camp. It's going to be a busy busy week.

Hey! Here's the race info from my diary. Thanks for asking!! :)

My race this morning went really well!

I finished in 36:08. I know, I know... that's way past what I was hoping for, but listen - the route was LONGER than 3.1 miles! My friend and I were both saying how it felt longer than a normal 5K, and sure enough, it was! We checked our Nike+ info, and BOTH of ours said the route was 3.4 miles! Then we started talking to others, and their Garmins all said the same thing, too! I know .3 of a mile doesn't seem like much extra to run, but that's a good 3 minutes extra on my time! Not that I mind running 3 extra minutes, I just with they would have told us it was longer than 5K! There was a lot of talk about how disorganized it was.

Anyway, I knew I was running faster than before (despite the tons of hills! ), so I knew there was no way it took me 36:08 to finish 5K!

Guess what my pace was?!

10:38 a mile!!!!! :D

My normal is 11:30/12:00 a mile, so 10:38 is AWESOME for me!!!!! I couldn't have been happier with my run! Especially since there were some killer hills involved!!! My actual 5K time was 33 minutes, and the last 3:08 was the extra .3 miles, adding up to the 36:08.

I'm so proud of myself!!!!!

Here's some pictures of my run and afterwards... check them all out!! :)

Considering the weekend I had, I would wager that I'm up a little bit on the scale too. I just gotta start my running again, and next weekend not slack off so bad! We will get back down, we always do ;)

Hang in there,
Sam

Evening Shift

Well, I told myself that I'd get back to it as soon as I got back from vacation. The drive home was not good. I was not back yet and we did fast food for the drive. I wasn't horrible, but bad enough. Arby's roast beef with curly fries and a jamocha shake. Wow, just for shits and giggles I went to the Arby's nutrition calculator and it comes out to be 1500 cal with 635 cal in fat. I guess that is horrible. That was pretty much all I ate for the day. No, wait, I had some potato chips and some raisins and... oh forget it. It was a really bad day nutrition wise. That was Saturday. Yesterday I got to work and caught up on stuff and didn't bring anything real for dinner, so I made some powdered soup that I kept in my locker just in case. That wasn't too good either.

Today I was determined to make it a good day. I started off with a normal serving size of cereal and coffee. Lunch was a low sodium turkey with mustard on sprouted wheat sandwich. The sprouted wheat is really good and higher in protein then other whole wheat. I got to work and had a greek yogurt with peanut butter and jelly. Then for dinner I had peanut butter and jelly. That is all. I was hungry, but I have to get used to that again.

I was dreading starting to work out again. My vacation is strenuous, but not enough to make it a workout. We were camping and there is a lot of heavy set up and break down. Chopping wood and carrying stuff, but nothing that tough. The big thing is the walking. Where we camp is about .75 miles from everything, and the parking lot is a half mile past that. We walk up hill to where everything is and back usually three times a day. I can walk for hours and not get any real exercise done. The only time I get any real exercise from it is when I have to carry anything heavy. Ice, water, kids, all three. Then it gets tough. I did play a game of hurley which is so much fun, but the hardest I've exercised since last year when I played hurley. Next year I'll have to be in much better shape.

This week the kids don't have any camp, just dad keeping them busy. F is working every day so I'm not having any real time to myself to go to the gym or anything. Perhaps tomorrow I'll take them with me. Well, tonight I'm at work and I figure that I'll go running on my lunch break. Well, no shorts or t shirt. That sucks. Then I remember that my suitcase is still in my trunk. I dig that out and find a pair of sweat pants and a t shirt. Well there goes my excuse out the window. So I go running. Wow, I sucked. I thought I was really flying, but the time clock was saying differently.

5k
28 min 57 sec
HR 187
5 min HR 127

Well, I got it under 29 min, but it should really be under 26. Not good. I'll get it down. I did something that I read on here which is after you are done running to stand on one foot. Pull your knee up to your chest, or close, and rotate the foot. Oh...My...God! My calf screamed at me when I did that. Now I have what my Grandmother used to call Armagh potato farmer calves. Big ass honking muscle calves that never give me a problem. This made them mad. I don't know if it's good or bad, but I'll have to see where it is tomorrow. Maybe I've asked just too much for all the time off.

Well, I'm glad to have run. It's one hurdle that gets higher the longer you put it off. Now I feel like I'm back to it.

Hey! Just wanted to say a quick hi. I'm very impressed with that run! When I go for a run, even if I've been good about keeping up with it, its usually 2 5 minute intervals. So don't get too down on yourself, you did good! And once you start to notice that its making a difference again, you'll want to keep going. You can do it!

Dude, nice run! Don't get down on that... especially after having put it off a bit. If I take a few days off then next time out feels like it's the first time I've ever run.

As much as I hate running, I have to admit I'm dropping weight like gangbusters since picking it up and I can't complain about that.

Thanks, guys. I'm not down about it, and I'm really glad that I did it. I was just hoping for less of a setback, but that's where it is. Also, with my weight back up it's like doing the run with a half gallon of water in each hand. That's a lot of weight to overcome.

One other thing to mention, I blew out the heel on my cheap sneaks, so I'll have to get a new pair today.

I'm jealous, wish I could run 5k. Think I'm gonna start that couch to 5k thing soon so I can train for my upcomming triathalon.

Bad Day

I'm going to start this with a request that anyone reading this does not respond here. If you feel the need to do anything, please say a prayer to whichever deity you feel appropriate.

Good friends of ours (she's 40 he's 42) had been trying to get pregnant for the last 5 years. After trying everything it finally took and they were expecting twins. Today they were born and the girl baby died in child birth. The boy is doing fine. Both parents are devastated. They have this beautiful baby boy and at the same time a dead baby girl. How does some one handle that? You can't grieve properly and celebrate properly. There is nothing you can do.

I don't have all the details on how or why this could have happened. I'm quick to blame the doctors/hospital/whoever, but that doesn't change what happened. I can only hope that in the years to come the boy's life will be something to celebrate, and his sister's life will be properly grieved.

HI! I remember posting the ankle stretches/rotations because my own ankles NEED that, or they get fatigued and I could roll one (have before, it SUCKED). I never mentioned that you can sit down and do it, how stupid of me! If your calves hurt, stretch those first for a while and breathe real deep. And if you want to rotate the foot to take care of your ankles, and you want to sit down and do it, I guess the only thing I would advise is makes sure you walk it off (the run) before you plop down. I heard it's better to cool down then fall over after a hard workout! LOL!

Hope you get more time to work out! :)

Thanks, I've been making it a habit of stretching after a five min cool down of walking. My flexibility has really improved this way.

I'm sure I'll be finding more time to workout after the kids are back in school. I'm not looking forward to that because we're really enjoying our summer right now. Heading to the water park after work today. So much fun.

My kids are 8 (girl) and 6(boy) So perfect for the water park. Still young enough to go with Dad, too. I love that.

We bought season passes so we'll go any time just for a couple hours or so.

Day Shift

When I started this week I thought I'd hit the ground running (pun intended) and really make a great week of it. Ran Monday, lifted Tuesday, (snap, what was that?) Tuesday while lifting I felt a twinge in my back and when I went to do abs I really felt it, so I stopped. I thought it would go away on it's own, so I took off Wednesday and thought I'd get to the gym Thursday. Last night I was so stiff that Just moving around was painful. I know that it's getting better, but it sucks when you have all this motivation and your body won't cooperate. One good thing is that the more I move around the more limber it feels. If I sit for too long, that's when is stiffens up. Maybe tomorrow it will feel good enough to do some jump rope or something.

Are you stretching?

Yesterday when trying to do the abs portion of my exercise class, I had to leave because some of the moves required being on one's coccyx. My fall yesterday bruised my coccyx. This sucks.

I have been stretching four or five times a day just to keep my ham strings loose. Tight ham strings put a real strain on the lower back. It helps a lot, but stretching in a way that doesn't strain the back is not the easiest. It's all muscular, so I know it'll go away soon enough. I should really pick up some Advil or better yet down some good scotch, but I'm working crazy hours so no drinking for me for a few days.
