treadmill question for dummies

if you are going to run on a treadmill 4-5 times a week what is a the most beneficial amount of time to get a good cardio workout ? is 50 min better than 40 min is 30 min. enough? to be brutally honest i want to do the least but still get good cardio results.also i understand about reaching the correct heart rate.-thanks

well, more is better when it comes to cardio and losing weight ... but, you may not need it. To lose the most weight, you want to keep your heart rate high in the cardio zone (~75% of max), but if u want ot only lose FAT, keep it lower around 60%. That's all up to you. Maximal benefits from both worlds is HIIT (look around the forum for a good definition and advice). However, the minimum workout is 20 minutes to reep benefits.

If MORE IS BETTER when doing cardio, why stop at 50-60 minutes. Hey, why not take off work or school and do cardio continuosly for 360 minutes (5 hrs). I'm being facititious.

The point is this, more Cardio IS NOT better - only the PRECISE amount of exercise is best. Like medicine, if you take more than what your pescribed..........you simply overdose. Or, in the fitness world, you overtrain.

Whatever amount of time you choose to run for, do it at the highest intensity you can maintain for this time. So for example, it is "better" to run for 30 minutes at 75% intensity than 50 minutes at 50%...calorie for calorie, you will burn more at a higher intensity.
