Travis's Weight Loss Diary

DAY ONE Woohoo!

Ok so a few have suggested I start one of these. I have browsed a few others and I think this could be a really good way to motivate me to stay on my target.

Here is a brief background on me.

My Name is Travis, I am 28 and live in downtown Seattle. I love this city! I recently had a birthday and it was this day that I was struck with some serious depression about my body and life. It was more that I was tired. Tired of being lazy, Tired of being the biggest person in the group. Tired of people not giving me a chance. First thing was first. I will admit it I was addicted to my computer. I hid in a virtual world not going out and having fun. And at the same time getting bigger and bigger. I put an end to that right away.

I have always been a big guy. In high school I played center for the basketball team. I was the second tallest on the team we had one guy who was 7'0". I was a mere 6'7". Still I usually am the tallest person in the room. which makes me easy to find HA-HA.

Anyway on my birthday I weighed myself, I had been feeling like I was getting rather heavy. Sure enough I was shocked I tipped in at 320 lbs. The heaviest I have ever been. That was it! It was time for a change. Right then and there I decided I was going to change. I have started running everyday, at first it has been hard, running mixed with walking. but it has been almost 3 weeks now, 3 weeks this Friday, and I am able to run much much more and really limit the walking.

I have also reduced what I have been eating as well as change some of what I have been eating. And so far I think the results have been very good.

On September 7th 2007 my weight was 320 pounds
On September 13th 2007 my weight was 313 pounds
And today September 19th when I woke up my scale said 311 pounds.

So progress is being made which is good. My goal is to be right around 200. I have read some things that say for my height the ideal weight is 180 lbs. I'm sorry but that's insane. That would make me a toothpick and no one will convince me that, that weight for my height is healthy. I think 200-220 is the range I want.

I am going to do my best to post on this and keep it updated. I don't have much support here at home so I am turning to this to help me in my quest. Thank you all for reading this I do appreciate it!

Also perhaps someone could help me out what does "calories allotted" mean really. I assume its how many daily calories I can have but how do I determine that?

I guess I should also talk about what im eating and drinking. I try to have 3 liters of water at work and another 2 at home during the day.

Today I had an apple on my way to work.

Then for lunch had a 6" turkey breast sub, lettuce olive peperchini's pickles onions and light mayo with mustard.

Dinner tonight I think is going to be some Sushi. I really only like california rolls so probably 6 rolls? that usually fills me up. I'll have to confirm that later!

Hey you!
So you started a diary.. good :)

Well it sounds like you are making a lot and I mean A LOT of progress and yes you would be a toothpick at 180 pounds most likely ..your way too tall to way that little ..so I would say your calculations are probably right ...

usually someone around 6'1 should be around 180 pounds ..so you beat us to the punch is saying that 200-220 is might fine for you ...

and as far as calories ..
there is a calculater you can use to calculate exactly how many calories you should intake for your weight and height ...and I believe... yes .. I know I dont have that web address ...so Try a message to ... oh geez I forgot her name ... damn

well I will get it for you ..
but Sunny did tell me about a site where I can enter my food and find out how many calories and other stuff I am taking in a day
and that would be on fitday.com
so

this will tell you the exact calories you are taking in ...
youd be surprised what a great tool it is ...

Anyway .. I hope you enjoy your stay here .. I will come back often and read up how you are doing .. I dont know of any challenges right now that are taking place ... but you can find them enroute to learning this huge space on the map of the web :)
take care
always

Welcome! Loving Seattle... well, at least the rains haven't showed up yet. Although, it does feel like fall. I am in Tacoma.

Like Natalie said Fit Day is helpful. I have used Fit Day, but I prefer The Daily Plate. They seem to have more foods that I commonly eat. You can also click on foods you have previously eaten and add them to any day.

Anyways, congrats on the loss so far! I agree that 180 would be to small for you. My brother-in-law is 6'5" and just recently lost a bunch of weight... if I had to guess I would say he is between 180 and 200... he is a stick now! If you like sticks... then go for it, but I wouldn't suggest it.

Anyways... I am rambling. Can't wait to hear updates!

Thanks to the both of you for your kind words and encouragement! I'll take a look at those sites you suggested to see if they can help. I have never been one to calorie count or read labels and such. And if this is going to work I think it would be in my best interest to start paying more attention to those things.

Last night had my best run to date! I think im running close to 85% of the route I have chosen. When I get to 100% and feel comfortable with it I'll try to add some new turns and head off in other directions trying to lengthen it. I can't wait for the shoes I ordered. I have really big feet, size 15, and most stores don't carry shoes for me I even went to nike town downtown I thought for sure they would have some but they didn't. So I ordered a nice pair of running shoes from nike.com. I need them badly because the soles of my current shoes have almost warn through, in fact the rubber on the bottom of them is already gone in one spot on both shoes. I should take a pic lol its kind of funny. Anyway those are on the way.

Yesterday was good as far as eating goes. 6" turkey sub at lunch I think I mentioned that and I did end up going for Sushi. I really don't like fish at all but certain types of sushi is pretty good. Mostly tuna and California rolls. I didn't have that much and felt full pretty quickly. I have been eating much slower and that seems to have an effect on how much I eat. Seems like common sense when you think about it but bah I use to really hover the food.

Anyway this morning on the way to work I stopped by Emerald City Smoothie. Got an energizer which is strawberries and Bananas with some protein and stuff. I looked on their site and found that they post what each 24 ounce smoothie has in terms of fat and carbs and such. I took a screen shot of it and hosted it

not too bad I don't think for a breakfast. For lunch I think its off to subway again its really the only close thing to my office that's not McDonalds or burger king.

Have to look at something for dinner too perhaps ill get some chicken and broccoli I loooooove broccoli I don't know why but I think it tastes good. Ha-ha

All for now looking forward to my run tonight!

oh and one last thing I couldn't resist I hopped on the scale this am and it said 308.7!! woohoo!!

this has been a long week work wise. Oh well that's what weekends are for. Yesterday I really really didn't want to run, it was slightly raining, a bit colder than normal. I need to look into some long sleeves running shirts and what not so I don't freeze its only going to get colder. Anyway I didn't want to run but I went anyway and felt much better after doing so. I am getting much closer to being able to run the whole route.

Food wise yesterday I did ok, subway for lunch 6" club which has a bit more that the turkey but nothing drastic and then dinner has a turkey wrap with a yogurt. I wanted to cook some chicken but my friend called me and I went and hung out over at his place and got dinner on the way.

I am kind of dreading the later part of the workday today. Today is the day we celebrate the months Birthday's and normally I can duck out but since this is a month in which my birthday happened I have to be here and I know if I refuse the cake ill get grief and what not. Maybe ill take a piece and sneak back to my desk and dispose of it when im in my office. I don't know that is gonna be a crappy situation. oh well ill deal.

not sure what the Friday meal situation holds usually I go out to lunch with co-workers perhaps we can find a good place where I could get like a salad or something. Then tonight Freemont is having Oktoberfest in September! Go figure. I am heading out there with friends to check it out. I am going to try to get outta here early today so I can run before the Friday night festivities start

You may want to try a gortex rain jacket ..you can find them online. Thats what my bf has. You might be able to find one online. Gortex keeps you from getting wet. Another thing you might want to try is sleeves from a bike shop ..they will know what I am talking about... they are not made of gortex ..but will keep you a little warmer ..or you could pick up a sports shirt from an outlet or bike shop .. I go to Kittery Trading Post to do my shopping for bike shirts .. I sometimes use them when walking ..and I def use them when I go bike riding ...

and as far as eating ..you seem to be doing well, but just to let you know

one slice of deli turkey meat has sixty calories ...I don't know if that takes any relevance to you ..
I have whole wheat cheerios in the morning with skim milk
and I have a sandwhich with seeded Rye bread and two slices of deli meat and mustard and two slices of cheese ..which is more cheese than I am supposed to have ..but got to add a little ...

but that might help you ..
like I said ... well you might want to get the info on each sub at subway ...
a lot of fast food restaurants now have info on what is in your sub and break them down ..
but the sub your having is the best sub to have at subway .. I used to eat it too ...

good luck
best wishes

How did the weekends events turn out? I went on a bit of a binge... but my cold seems to be going away now :). I hate mutual birthday celebrations... people always think everyone should share in the calorie fest.

Let us know how you are doing.

Hi Travis! Hope you had a great weekend- sounds like your pretty enthusiastic about running. bleh. not me, lol. Anyways, looking forward to your results :) have a great day!

Hi Travis
Hey, we are kind of neighbors, as I live in BC, just a stone's throw away!

You are doing yourself such a huge favor by getting in shape before you hit the big 3-0. It sounds like you're tackling things wisely, and that your goal is very reachable! Congratulations on the weight lost already; you've done great!

Keep it up!
Cheers from Canada...

Hello Travis,
How is your day going?

Hope your doing well,
and if you slipped up, we all have....
I know that when I slipped up I didnt show up at the weight loss forum for weeks, but the girls keep me going, its a good place to go.

I hope you are starting your week with a winning smile!

Thanks all and so sorry for the lack of updates around the weekend I am not near a cpu that much. It was a crazy weekend. Went to Oktoberfest on Friday and sampled lots of different micro brews. Had a really eventful night that night as we scampered all over town. But it was a absolute blast and I didn’t feel to bad about drinking the beer because I made myself run when I got home from work so while its not the greatest idea to have beer at least I had some I dunno backup I guess lol. Anyway that was Friday night. Saturday I took my one day off from running, I hadn't taken a day off from it in over a week. I think my legs are really grateful ha-ha. So Saturday was a relaxing day lots of water and had a roast beef sandwich for dinner at a friends that I picked up on my way over to his house. We were ordering the UFC PPV and that means pizza so I knew I had to bring something. The sandwich worked much better than a slice of pizza. Something I noticed about a lot of these UFC fighters is that obviously they are in great shape but guys shorter than me were weighing in at 225-230 and obviously much stronger than and but that reassured me that that weight might be the best to shoot for. Anyway random thought.

Sunday was the Seahawks game. I have season tickets. We tailgated but I had breakfast before I went to the party. A smoothie and a banana which was good. What a fun game that one was, any time you win in the final minute it makes for a very exciting game. It turned into such a nice bright sunny day too that I decided to walk home form the game. Its about 3 miles to my house so that worked out well. I walked along the water front it was really pretty out so I got to the statue park and took a few photos which apparently didn't get saved >< but I did find a few from my last Mariners game and that's the same route home so I'll show you those:

The day was very similar, just beautiful. Anyway that evening once I got home I didn't eat great had a burrito cause it was easy. Oh well. Today is a new day and looking forward to my run. Here is the question will my new shoes be here? its taking them forever to get here!!

For lunch today it was back to a turkey sandwich and lots of water. I wonder what kind of calories you can find in Pho, that Vietnamese noodle soup. Its really good I'll have to see I can't imagine it being to horrific. I am thinking of getting that for dinner, Ill look and see if I can find a rating on it if not then I'll go grab some chicken or something along those lines. I need to go to the store the kitchen is bare bones at the moment. All out of my favorite fruits and veggies so need to restock.

Overall probably a bit of a step back over the weekend but nothing really terrible and a week of running will surely have me down more this week!

Thanks all of your for checking in it really does help.

Nataliejo:
Thanks for the advise on the gortex I am going to get a few ordered that will really help. Running in cold raining weather isn't going to be fun and I don’t want to catch cold. So if I get that stuff now ill be ready for when that nasty weather hits which it will and soon. =)

Tiffany:
So glad to hear your getting over that cold I know how brutal they can be. I was able to sneak back to my office without and cake from the mutual birthday on Friday so that was a win for me! Luckily I really didn’t have to explain to anyone that I just didn’t want any they all just were to focused on their own pieces ha-ha.

Jess:
Tell me about it! I use to dread running, and never thought I would enjoy it. I have been doing it for about 3 weeks now and let me tell you your body changes you really start to look forward to it! If want to try to stick with it for 2-3 weeks and then you may see yourself looking forward to it. They other thing that makes them more fun is an ipod no way I would be able to do it without it, it is a godsend!

ABBAgirl:
Yeah BC is great I have been a few times and it really is only a stones throw away! Thanks so much for the encouragement!

Yeah, I'll really hafta try that out. ahem. lol, just kidding... I keep telling myself to try running, and ONE of these days, it shall happen, but in the meantime- well, honestly, in the meantime I'm not doing ANYTHING  (I'm remodeling my house, and working two jobs, pain in the ass, yup)
So what is Pho?? Is it like a creamy soup, or a brothy soup? I've never heard of it, but Montana really isn't a treasure trove of cultural differences, lol. We've got ONE sushi joint, in the biggest city in Montana. Sad.
Anyway, talk to ya later :)

Yesterday evening I had my best run to date. After climbing to the top of the stairs and the top of the hill I started in on the run and only had to stop twice. It was really amazing how I have slowly been able to increase the length of run times. Another week or so I would envision me being able to run the entire thing and that will be a great day!

Last night my roommate brought home steak and corn on the cob. I added a small spinach salad to the dinner and called it good. It was probably a little more than I needed but still pretty healthy and I was pretty hungry after the run. I managed to get several liters of water down too.

It hopefully is going to be a slow night, one where I can relax a bit. Ill get home run and then start in on the piles of laundry I have waiting for me....Argh not so much fun.

Anyway its a gloomy day which always affects my attitude for the day im kind of feeling bleh but oh well winter is coming better get use to crappy weather.

Jess:

Pho is a noodle soup with some meat and veggies not creamy at all very brothy. I didn't get a chance to look it up and need to too I am sure the sodium is high like in all soups but I cant imagine it being all that terrible for ya. Its pretty good too bad you don't have a place nearby were you could snag some. Sounds like you got a ton on your plate at the moment hope you can find some time to relax and rest!

Congratulations on the run! I can't wait to get back out there! I am thinking I will be feeling well enough to workout on Thursday or Friday. I just got new running shoes and haven't been able to try them out yet! Your lucky the rain let up tonight... I'm sure it was a nice and cool run.

Have a good day!

So I woke up this morning and was all excited to weigh myself I haven't done so in a few days. I was hoping to see a nice drop. Instead I found that I was at 308.3 up .6 from my prior weighing. That's kind of depressing but I realize a lot of factors can go into that. It's ok though just means I need to work harder. So that being said I have decided to count the calories. I have never done it before but I think this is something that will help me regulate my eating a bit better.

Ok so I followed some links in these forums specifically this sticky. It was short and sweet lol. I followed its link to the BMR calculator and came up with this number = 1800.805. Now the guide here states that I should not reduce my daily intake by any more than 30% so 1800.805 * 30% = 540.2415. and if you take that off of my original number id be at 1260 daily calories. Does that seem low? Or High? I really have no clue. For now that's what im going to shoot for.

So this morning I had a Nature Valley granola bar which was 180 and half a cup of Cottage cheese which was 100. So breakfast was a stellar 280. I guess not that bad really, it leaves 980 for the rest of the day. Not to bad, I can tell though counting these everyday is going to be a freaking pain in the a**. Oh well ill get use to it just like running.

Ill write more later today with how the counting goes right now though I should actually do some work while im at work what a concept I know!

That seems really low! I haven't looked at many of the stickies, but to find out your maintence calories you should multiply your current weight by 12. That will give you the number of calories you should consume to stay at the same weight. I don't know about how much to reduce to loose, it depends on how fast you want to loose. The daily plate (site I think I mentioned before) allows you to enter your weight and how much you want to loose per week. By that information it will give you an estimate of how many calories you should eat each day. I put in that I wanted to loose 1.5lbs a week and I am at ~1,600 calories a day. I don't know what websites you used... but 1,200 is really low. I would look into it some more.

One person that might be a good resource for you while you try to iron things out is Steve. You can ask him questions in his diary, he is very helpful.

Good luck!

Your a caloric intake should be higher. Shouldn't cut it too short early in the exercising and "diet lifestyle change." I suggest the way that Tiffany counted .. 12* your weight...

I just did mine and found to stay the same I have to eat 3500 calories ..so I am going to cut myself down to 3000 or 2900... go slow ... and it will stay of permanently ..
and about the .6 oz gain... water weight probably...

take in more water ..
if you don't like the way water tastes ..add a slice of lemon to ever cup of water ..iced is the best! lol

Well..I hope you have a good run! Keep it up...
You can do this hun!:)
keep trecking :)

always
natalie jo

Thanks Tiffany I took your advice and post a question on Steve's diary. Seems like he really does have some good insight.

nataliejo, yeah to me the number does seem low I mean I am a big guy I think I mentioned this but im 6'7" on top of being this heavy so I think my numbers may be skewed as I an not really "average" in terms of body.

Anyway im one step ahead of ya on the water I keep a 1 liter bottle of water at my desk all day at work and try to get 3-4 bottles down while im there and then at night I keep drinking water until I go to bed, which to be honest is making me wake up in the middle of the night but oh well small price to pay for the long term goal.

I had a meet up with some friends who invited me out to there house next summer for boating. I haven't been to a beach or on a boat or really a setting where I would take my shirt off in years and it got me thinking how great would I feel if I didn't even think twice about doing so. It honestly almost made me tear up. Kind lame but at least I really know now that this is something I want badly.

Oh and a side note I had a turkey sandwhich with some cheese for lunch right around 414 calories and another bottle of water. That leaves with a lot of calories for dinner. I really have a craving for some chicken so I thinkim grilling tonight after my run!
