Toning?

I've been trying to grain muscle mass and lose body fat at the same time, which I've been told isn't such a great idea. I've been doing about 8 reps for building which i've seen some improvement, but if i want some really cut muscles how many reps would you all reccomend? I was assuming anywhere from 12-15 but I'm 16.. and an idiot. :D Thanks.

No rep scheme gets you cut.

Lowering BF% is the only way to look cut. if you want to look better WHILE your cut do reps of 8-12 for hypertrophy.

just to expand on THBench...

toning is just the process of shedding bodyfat to reveal the lean muscle underneath. obviously, you need a decent amount of lean mass to look toned/chisled/cut/shredded...otherwise you just look like a stick...all gangly and emaciated.

low reps, 4-6...build strength primarily (power lifters)
moderate reps, 8-12...build mass primarily (body builders)
high reps, 14+...build endurance primarily...which is why those schemes get used for physical therapy and for endurance athletes (think marathon runners and guys like Lance Armstrong)
