I took the bike out for a ride today. I was sick all week so thought i better not do the 90k loop, maybe a 50k loop or even the 30k loop. I decided on the 30k because i can do it with a group and its social.
SO i cycled down to the shop, and nobody turned up except me and this one other dude. We talked for 15 mins then when nobody else showed i decided to do the 50km loop.

My average speed sucked (but that was because i had done the uphill part of the trip .. not the downhill part) which was to be expected, however my heart rate averaged at about 180bpm. Now according to this thing my maximum heart rate is 187, so effectivly i was working entirely anarobic, and this was on an off day!
It also worked out based on my weight age etc and all the usual crap (its very complex) that i burnt 1100 calories in 1:10 ... wtf?!?!!!
So clearly im working out harder than i thought i was. And I was only figuring i was burning about 600calories an hour usually lol .. that means my 4 hour ride last weekend would have burnt about ... 4000 calories :O
yikes! Anyway, its brung a whole new understanding on how i work out, where i need to work on and what im good at.

So yeah, all is good here in lizzyland :)

Good grief! This is what you do after being sick all week? Wow, you put my workouts to shame. Actually, I think the calories burned may be quite accurate. If you're up at 90% of max hr for that long, you would burn a whole hell of a lot of calories each hour, and 1100 is certainly in the range.

I'm in awe!

Even though you forgot your wallet and had to call hubby to pick you up you still did great and knowing your limits and your body is good...especially after beign sick and not feeling well you still rocked!!!

Im still warey of believing - though apparently the odd working out of calories was a bug in the previous version of the garmin edge (not the one i have) im still wary :)
Normally i do 3-4 hours hours, so that would work out to be a pile!

Thanks though, for your continued support

Hehe i didnt feel overly great about it - i felt like a quitter :/
But im ok with it - no regrets.

I forget if i mentioned it, but i got a letter for my first hospital appointment. Im petrified that my weight wont be under the BMI of 30 on their scales. I know some scales weigh up to 3kg (5lb or so) different, and thats going to be the difference between the op or not.
Hopefully i can loose the extra little bit so im well under the goal before thursday visit, and if not im sure i can convince them of how fit and muscly i am :O
You just dont get much fitter than i am now lol .. in fact im really proud and happy with myself atm. Sure i weigh heavy - but im super uber fit and im loving it. Im never short of breathe. Im rarely tired except when genuinely needing sleep. I can run for nearly an hour at any one go, and cycle for 4 hours non-stop up to 90km.... or probably even more (dunno .. never tried lol)
I fit normal clothes, i look darned good (even with a little extra padding lol).

But yeah, im still scared they wont allow me to do the donation. (donating a kidney for my brother for those new to my diary).

Yes girl adn curse and say damn - you look damn good - I think you look awesome adn I am sure it will all be ok - no scense in worrying yourself over something that hasnt happenned yet...

Of course you are scared it is natural - who wouldnt be - you are doing a very couragous thing and along the way you ahve gianed a fountain of health and knowledge

You truly are a role model and example of dedication and hard work - you deserve a big pat on the back for all you have succeed with and for donating a kidney to your bro and gettin fit enough to do it

You are one hell of a woman Liz :D:D:D!!!

Somehow I'm sure that in these circumstances they'll take into consideration not only your weight but also the direction it's going. If you were coming from 130 pounds and were now on the 30 BMI neighbourhood, I'm sure they'd be a bit worried. You however can show them the long dedication to becoming healthier and lighter and fitter in a controlled way. I don't think it's about a few hundred grams here, even if the scale there was different than yours. Ten kilos ago, maybe yes, now, I don't think so. Just tell them a bit about your life now, if they seem reluctant... :)
Juliette

well they were not interested after loosing over 100lb and being only 10lb over the goal weight before. I got told 'not interested'

Hopefully this time it goes well.
In the mean time im cutting back on processed stuff and stucking with the meat and veges and unprocessed low fat stuff.... except for the chocolate bar i had today ... *G*

I was totally agreeing with Juliette and thinking, "How could anyone not see that you fit what they're after regardless of their scales"... but I take your point about their previous attitude.

If they're going to get technical on you based on dodgy figures from alternative scales (I reckon ALL scales are dodgy) maybe you can ask for a "recount" on friendlier scales? :)

Regardless, good luck with the appointment wishes. :)

Hey, sorry I haven't been on for a bit!

I hope the appointment goes well on thurs! I'd hope they'd take into about muscle weight. I mean, it's true, muscle weights more than fat and you obviously have a lot of muscle! So I hope it'll all go well for you, good luck on trying to lose a bit more throughout the week!

I have a question about bicycles. I have a bike, but it's a bit small and not so comfortable from like 10 years ago. Now, is it better to buy a new bike that's slightly bigger and rides better, or would it be ok to just stick with what I have? Reason I'm asking is because I plan on biking to work (gas prices are ridiculous ($1.289 per litre which would = $5.156 per gallon) so yeah, it's expensive.) So I don't know if I should spend the money on a bike or not. My sis and her hubby both just bought these $500 bikes and I tried her bike and it was like heaven! I just don't know if it would be worth it, or just suffer with my old one.

Quick post here catching up with everyone here and updating my weight for a challenge.

Yeah gas is expensive here - since its summer cycling is a great idea.
Are you sure you're bike is too small? it costs next to nothing to take it to the bike shop and have it refitted especially for your size and weight. Most will do it free.
It would be infinatly cheaper to replace the seat or give the old one an overhaul than to buy an expensive new one.

The reasons i bought myself a brand new expensive one was because of the amount of riding i did (and i rode the old one to death lol), and also because i was trying to employ a hobby that i can continue after the weight is lost so it never comes back again.

As for the hobbies thing, ive tried running and weights amoung other things ... why limit myself :)

And on a brighter note! ive lost 7.2lb since the 1st of this month! im super happy! the hospitals scales will have to be a fair way out to weigh me over the exact weight now lol :D

Oh and arg - i have an allergy face - eyes all puffed up and looking like a shar pei dog :/

I hope the allergies pass soon! shar pei are cute, but only as puppies ;)

WTG on the lost pounds - that is fantastic :D

How can hospitals use something as useless as BMI to figure that out. BMI was created over 100 years ago and never meant to be used this way.

Yeah I'm sold on this bike thing as well. I guess I had to bide my time to 'know' it was for me. Today I had to mail a letter so I rode the bike down to the post office - a trip I normally (without thinking) drive down to do.

The bike is fast becoming a family member to me. I'm going to buy a lock and start using for other trips. I only use it where I'm on it now and don't park it out of sight.

Sales pitch aside, just wanted know if he's on or off IYO. lemme know what ya think ?? kthx.

Hey awesome job on the weight loss! That's so great :D

I know nothing about bikes but my bf said it was too small. He knows more about bikes than I do. But, all I know is that I was using that bike at 12 years old. Sure I was a tall kid, but not this tall, lol. So, I dunno! I really have no idea. I like the look of my sis's bike, lol... and it feels easier to ride for some reason.

Wow finally somebody with a clue here. Try telling this shit to other people who are still filled with 80s ideals and urban legends.
I especially love this one
In order to lose body fat, you must burn off more calories than you consume. Despite the proliferation of diets- low carbohydrate, low fat, high protein, high carbohydrate etc this simple rule remains. I don’t want to talk about nutrition here as this is more than adequately covered in another chapter in this book, but suffice to say the caloric balance is still important.
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard people say “I barely eat anything – I eat like a bird and I still gain weight”. Oh really. You are eating fewer calories than you need and your body is gaining weight? Impossible. This violates the law of thermodynamics. Usually it’s a case of not really being aware of how much you are actually eating. Because let’s face it – if your body was capable of producing body weight from nothing, then we better get you sent over to NASA or UNICEF immediately – with magical genes like yours, we might just be able to solve the Third World’s hunger problem.

I have soo heard that one SOO many times! "ioh but i dont eat much" or "i eat less than xxxx and shes tiny"
Its utter bullshit!

Well go buy one then :D Just dont go spending vast sums of $ on one until you know its gonna be worth it :)

Tell me about it! what peeves me off is that the hospital still use it! its archaic!

I agree - any dog thats pedigree that much is gonna have health problems .... hmm maybe thats my problem .. im too pedigree!

Arg my face is still a mess - im washing all the bedding again :/

Yeah that makes sense. I'm hoping if I do buy one it'll be worth it. I mean I plan on biking to work everyday, and maybe going on bike rides on the weekends and whatnot. I've always wanted to be good at biking and running. So I hope I'd stick to it, but hope and reality are two different things! lol

Congrats on the weight loss! I had gained some back, but I lost it all this week. YAY me! I think I'm going to start trying to walk. I can't even imagine trying to get on a bike at this point. Maybe later...

Whoo-hoo! Good loss, and I'm really thrilled that you are below the 30 BMI threshold!
When it comes to allergies, I have them bad and I've had them all my life, I don't know what you do to reduce them, but if you are concerned about your bedding, consider using "non-scented" detergent, and give up the fabric softener (assuming you don't already do these things). I know what I use anything with fragrances or dyes added, it can really give me an all over body rash; even worse is when it's just a single article of clothing affected. Mom managed to make just my shirt give me a horrible rash once when I was a kid, and as a teenager she did it to my underwear... THOSE are uncomfortable moments.
If you still have problems, consider some benadryl type medications; they can help reduce the worst effects in an hour or less. I had it happen a couple of years ago (slept at a friend's house) and woke up in the middle of the night with an all-over rash (thank goodness I wasn't sleeping naked!), and the rather large dose of benadryl I took helped to stop the raspberry my body was becoming, and a shower followed by a move to a sleeping bag meant I was only mildly damaged when morning came. It still sucked, but it kept me from needing a trip to the hospital.

I'm still blown away by everything you manage to accomplish, and always impressed by your dedication to this goal.
