This is why I hate Biggest Loser

But they are not changing those people's lives, that's the problem. They are ripping them out of what they usually do, throw them into something that is not sustainable for more than two weeks, and then kick them back into their old lives as soon as the show is over. Those people don't really learn anything that will help them long term.

I think 90% of the time, the show does more damage than good.

I didn't realize you were on the show. So your saying that you didnt learn anything about basic nutrition and exercise while you were there? That sucks

Ah. sarcasm.

San never said he was on the show, he is pointing out (based on the later stories and plain observation) that the show does more harm than good. They regain the weight, the health effects of losing that much weight that fast then putting back on is definitely no healthy.

I was going for Smartass but sarcastic works too I guess, lol

I realize its very unhealthy to lose that much weight that quickly. My point was that they have to be learning something as well.

Are they? Their goal is mass weight loss for money. There might be other goals too, I get that but still..I think their mind is more on the money.

well, while I agree that they are not helping these people to lose in the healthiest way possible....they are losing weight still. Being as overweight as some of them are, it has to be just as dangerous, if not more than their weight loss methods??? doesnt' it???

I just watched a "where are they now" episode, what a month ago? and it seems like most have kept the weight off??

Let me rephrase, they don't learn anything that they don't already know.

Eat less, move more.

Just because the people on the show are overweight, it doesn't mean they are stupid.

But 2 weeks isn't enough to teach them about nutrition (especially if they work out 80% of the day), or to show them how to keep the weight off in the long run.

I've seen several documentaries about people who've been on the various versions (different countries) etc. of the show, and it appears as if the majority of them struggle to even maintain, most of them put at least some weight back on, and there were a few who actually gained weight past their initial weight. There was also one case where the producers of BL made a 'Where are they now' show, showing off one of the girls that was part of the show as somebody who hadn't gained any weight back and actually continued losing. Later on it came out that she had used the money from the show to get a gastric bypass. They never mentioned that in the 'Where are they now' show. Of course not.

I still think that BL shows what can be achieved if you have 24/7 to use on losing weight. It is hard work but it can be done. Regaining the weight back is a huge problem for most overweight people whether they have had a slow and steady loss on their own or been on the BL show.

Nobody wants to see low numbers on a show.. High scores, knock outs , touch downs and home runs is what Americas about! It's sad that only losing 2 pounds in a week is a bad thing nowadays.

I just saw a promo for a new show on A&E..... but I just forgot the name......
Anyhow... one of the trainers said "You know how to lose weight, but you don't know crap about how to keep it off"....
Who knows.... it might be a show that really helps people.
...
just saw another ad for it .... It's called "Heavy"
If anyone watches it,... I guess let us know how it is. (I don't have cable, just internet)

I'm a big fan of the Biggest Loser. If you don't learn anything while you're on the ranch then you maybe didn't open your eyes enough, or you played it like a game. The important thing to realize is that some people are going to fail - they'll lose a few and then get kicked off and go home and gain it back. But some people succeed, like Ali (I'll use her 'cause she seems the most popular). Ali has kept the weight off for a long time now - do you think she would say BL is a terrible show because not everyone wins?
And don't forget about people that watch at home and get inspired to hit the gym or be active. Despite the fact that people may hope for a 10 pound loss in a week, I think most people realize that it's not realistic. What gets me motivated is seeing these people run a marathon, or even sprint at 9mph on the treadmill for 60 seconds. I know I can barely do that, and I'm half their size! The best part of the show to me (and really the only part I think that's worth anything) is when they show the contestants working out. It's so motivating and inspiring.

This is all just for TV ratings! Then you get people that get out their and try to do the same thing...can you say fail?

i believe the tv show is all factual, but is also very unrealistic. it's still really motivational to watch though!

lose fast, look old!

I think that slow highly nutritional weight loss will likely make you look better. Ever notice how old everyone looks at the finale?

It's so boring and full of melodramatic crap. It's no better than the real world, I especially hate it when the trainers stir shit up.
IF I had Tevo, I'd probably record it and skip past 90% of the show, just to see the highlights, but I don't.

Back in 2004 I lost about 30 pounds in a week so its not so crazy considering that this person was 600+ pounds.

Also, the biggest loser seems to be "fixed", fake and staged, which is not necessarily a bad thing as long as you do not take it too seriously :)

41 pounds in a week is crazy

but then again he was like 600 pounds so the weight is bound to fall off of him faster than a normal person.

I used to be obsessed with this show, not so much anymore

I love biggest loser but I take it with a pinch of salt!7
It's so unrealistic, and yes a lot struggle to keep it off afterwards.
Did you know, if they speak out about the show they can be fined an unlimited amount?! So those people who said a week is not a week are crapping themselves now in case they get sued.

What upsets me is some poor man/woman is going to think they can do this, too.

People do not lose numbers like that. My father`s friend ingested some toxic substance while scuba diving and performing pipe maintenance. He was in hospital for 2 weeks on a drip... He did not eat and took in very little liquid for those two weeks as he grazed death. At that state he lost about 30lbs in a span of 2 weeks. Then they are gonna have a person looking for GOOD HEALTH losing 41lbs in a week on their show. ggrreeeaaattttt

I really hate the obsession everyone has with weight as well. Weight doesn`t mean much. You can gain weight while gaining health. Just because your body weighs less doesn`t mean you`re on a magical road to good health. Unless you live a life where you need to worry about the force of gravity on your body then the exact # which you weigh is useless. The scale is a big liar and I truly feel bad for people obsessed with weighing themselves everyday. They are chasing the dragon. Like I said, if you need to do that then go for it... but the average person should not be worrying about it. The mirror will not lie and how clothes fit is measurement enough for gauging how fast you are approaching good health.
