Thinking about getting a protein suppliment

So latley ive been thinking alot about buying myself some kind of protein shake. Ive never done it before an im a total newbie when it comes to this.
I see some which have both protein and alot of carbs, i think i remember these being bad because you could buy the two separate, one protein and one carb and it would be cheaper? Besides, ill get carbs from my diet, protein is harder to get.

What brands are good? what should i look for in a good protein suppliment?
They sell some at the gym, next time im there ill note all the brands they have and post them here to see if any are good. But please, make recommendationes.

And keep in mind i live in norway, id rather not order online from the US and have to pay alot of extra to get it here.

Optimum Nutrition's 100% whey extreme milk chocolate flavor is my favorite at the moment.

I like their vanilla ice cream. I am considering buying ON Pro Complex next however. Its a bit more pricey, but I am gonna look at some other protein types.

so. theres basicly no protein powder that will rip me off, something that wont work propperly or something like that?

what about when to take it? one shake after training, but during training? Now i have a drink thats carbs and protein (its just chocho milk actually :p) i drink half during and half after training, since you need some carbs during training, spechally if you train for a long time. now since the protein shake doesnt have alot of carbs should i just make one bottle chocho milk and one bottle protein powder, and drink the chocho milk while working out and the protein shake after?

I think the chocolate milk would be fine during exercise, though it would probably make me sick to my stomach. You can do chocolate milk instead of whey, but I think that a pro/carb shake is superior. Its been said that you really dont need a drink during exercise unless you're going to be in the gym somewhere in the vicinity of two hours. However I just read an article about the benefits of carb/pro shakes pre, during, and post exercise. Its in my log.

you think a pro/carb shake is best both during and after? but i shouldnt get a protein powder that also has carbs? what should i do then? the chocholate milk is high in carbs, it got decent protein too, should i save half of it for later to take with the protein shake?

no, just buy your carb powder separate. that way its cheaper, and you can put in the right amount of carbs.
dextrose (a.k.a. corn sugar) should only run $1 per pound or less. i get it at a local home beer making shop, cuz you use dextrose in beer and wine making.

you won't go wrong with ON protein. I personally like protein powder, since its a blend of whey and casien, and it tastes awesome (but, so does ON).

there are a few brands out there that aren't a good quality protein...and they are so cheap, you'll know it when you find them.

i found something on an online shop. And it says on theire site they even have a shop in my town.

Pro-90 Isolate

Næringsinnhold 100 gram 40 gram*
Energi 375 kcal / 1575 kJ 150 kcal / 630 kJ
Protein 90 g 36 g
Karbohydrat 1,5 g 0,6 g
Fett 1 g 0,2 g

says its milk protein: 80% kasein, 20% myse

its 4kgs and costs 110 USD

They also got pro 80, which is 80 percent protein, more fat and carbs. its 2g fat per 40g, a bit cheaper though. But im guessing the 90% is the best.

and if i buy some carb drink in addition, do i just sip on that a bit during workout, and drink some of it later along with my protein?

$110 for 4kgs?? that's expensive...very expensive. I get 2kg of Nitrean for $39 USD...and that's not even cheap protein (but I like the quality).

Look for ON brand. their Pro-complex line is a blended protein and wont' be as expensive. also, the serving size of pro-complex is 2 scoops, totaling about 56g of protein.

hmm.. maybe i have to order from abroad then. Everything in norway seems to cost this much.. maybe because they dont make the stuff here, and have to get it inn from abroad?

Give Gymgrossisten a call and ask if the have retailers in Norway, great prices and service. I use Fairing a lot, best tasting protein there is.

Yes. Many people also drink shakes during other times of the day, so low carb is the way to go. Plus since you're buying protein powder, why would you also buy carbs mixed in. Like Malk said about the dextrose, thats what I was referring to. The thing I dont like about ch milk is that the protein is not comparable to a shake. In milk you have about 8-12g protein, where as a shake contains 24g.

I'm also on the whey + dextrose train.. You'll get 24g whey protein, perfect for PWO and an adjustable amount of sugars to put in as well. Cookies N' Creme ON and Dextrose is my personal favorite, tastes like candy :)

so i really dont have to buy carb powder in addition, i can just use the chocholate milk ive been using so far? how much carbs do you really need right after you're workout? gotta figure out if half a liter of chocholate milk, taking half during and half after with the protein powder will be enough..

Tony for the win! Ding ding ding :)

But really, he is right, 2:1 ratio. That's a lot of choco milk...
