The Start of Something Good - Catie's Diary

Well... I ran 3 MILES last night without stopping at all and felt amazing. It was crazy - this is very big for me. I am so proud of myself for that. I got a massage on Saturday and it really helped my legs, as did a critique from someone saying that I was running on my heels too much with not enough toes - so I did the toe to toe thing and it was MUCH easier on me. I am very happy about that.

I had a bad eating day Saturday :( but a good one yesterday and I've started off really well today. I'm getting ready to go to the gym. I just want the rest of this weight to fall off - but I've plateaued for the last week so that kind of sucks but it is part of it.

More later.

I know how you feel.. I have plateaued for the umpteenth time these past two months ..its getting scary...because I get discouraged and I lose motivation as well ..it can be tuff staying on track sometimes ...but we make are bed and lye in it ..and I want to be healthier and happier and thinner and more attractive when I lye in my bed lmao ..so kudos to for keep it going ..now I just have to get away from my bfs junk food and get home and work out .. I do most of my work outs at home and what not ... walking bike riding ..etc ...but when I am here I am faced with his fattening food ..crazy crap .. lol

but anyway ..hopefully when we live together I will be able to stay away from his stash of junk food he has lmao ..
or even learn this week how to stay away from the stash ...

Definately don't undercut your calories too much, especially on days that you know you are going to have a good workout.

I have found with myself that if I eat a bit more on days I work out I am able to really get after it at the gym and work at a much higher level of intensity.

While I have no scientific basis for this whatsoever:) I think eating 1500 calories and burning an extra 200 at the gym becuase you have energy is better than eating 1200-1300 calories.

Also I have found that eating a bit more helps me with motivation sometimes. If I cut my calories too low I tend to be lethargic and not feel active. This translates into fewer workouts and an easier jump to binge eating.

If your body feels bad maybe it is telling you that you need more of something. For me often it's carbs, because a lot of the "healthy" food I eat is very low carb, sometimes my body really wants me to eat some more. If I don't reasonably accomodate the need, I'll falter somewhere much worse later.

Randomcards - thanks so much for your input. I have been really thinking about the calorie intake thing and you are right. I am sooo lathargic lately (ever since sunday) and I think it may be because I don't have enough energy from eating enough. I also really like the idea of eating an extra two hundred or so calories and being okay with it - because you know you are going to work hard at the gym.

I really appreciate your input. Thanks!

Random is totally correct!
I agree!

Well you sound like your doing awesome hun! Congrats on the weight loss!
I hope your taking in more than 1000 calories. To burn, you need energy, to live, you need energy, don't lose this by eatting too little so you lose weight faster, trust me... its not the answer...
I did the same thing. Actually just about cut all the calories out for three months, lost sixty pounds, but ended up in the hospital on my death bed. They told me to eat .. I binged and binged and binged ..and I gained sixty pounds back ..plus more... sixty pounds is what I lost in six months...but after the hospital and almost losing my life from not eating enough ..that was enough to make me eat ..being thin is nice, but living is better ..if You can find a happy medium ..thats always very nice ...so don't rush the weight loss ...

eat... and you won't be lethargic anymore ..and -= will be able to exercise ..and lose more weight. Eating more than 1000 calories should be your goal and exersizing .. you need to eat to burn..

best wishes

and you need to eat, to keep your metabolism going so you can lose weight ...if you keep eating too less ... you will run out ...and binge binge binge ..when your body is at its worse of starvation ... too little calories ..
I would suggest ..like random said to eat more calories ...

you will have the energy to move more and exercise more intensely

best wishes

thanks for looking out for me nataliejo! you are right... i actually consumed 1500 yesterday - and felt sooo much better. It was really weird, I actually had some guilt about eating which is not good, but at the end of the day I felt much better. And I woke up today feeling better too. I know that you are correct- it is just a matter of doing it.

It is raining here today- so I'm going to hit the gym up later instead of going outside. I'm pretty motivated- but still plateaued at 187 - so hopefully i can break it slowly but surely as soon as possible in a healthy way :)

thanks again for checking in on me!

Hi catiew21,

I saw your post in the Before after and in-between forum and thought I would stop by your diary! You are doing really well I mean the change is clearly noticeable. Keep on trucking with what your doing those plateaus come and go. I kinda hit one last week where I hung at the same weight for almost two weeks but now I am dropping again.

I totally know what you mean about the running none stop that you mentioned. I just had the same thing happen to me and when I finished it I couldn't contain myself I was going up and down my driveway clapping and mentally cheering myself on its such a accomplishment for us. Glad to hear you felt the same.

It looks like your getting some great advice here I know nataliejo has really been super supportive on my diary and is a great person for you to have here!

Heres hoping you have a great week and the weight keeps dropping I will be excited to hear updates as you go along!

Great job so far you should be very proud!

Travis

Wow.. I just realized it has been a while since I've written. I need to get on the ball. So I am still freaking 187. I have not exercised like I should have this week though. I don't know what has gotten into me.I have eaten well - but I know I will see the most results from the exercise. I've only been twice this week - and am going to the gym in about an hour so that will be good.

So I really want to be 160 by the end of December. I know that is probably unrealistic, considering I haven't lost any weight in the past 2 1/2 weeks and that would mean that I need to lose three pounds a week until after Christmas. Obviously to get there, I'd have to change a few things. I have got to figure out how to eat more meals on days that I have school. From what people have told me, and all that I've read - I have to eat frequent small meals throughout the day to keep my metabolism up. I only have class on Tuesdays and Thursdays and my not so ingenious way of deciding my schedule was to have all my classes back to back with no break. I usually eat a yogurt about 8:30 on those days and then don't eat til dinner (bad I know!) after 5 that night. Then i am exhausted because I have no energy because I didn't eat - and you know how that goes. I have to make myself start packing a lunch to take with me.

I hate to sound negative - but I have been having problems with my running. I have recently started lifting weights, and that's going pretty well but I am exhausted when I run for some reason. I went last night to the track and i was so lathargic. I know cardiovasucarly I am doing okay because my recovery time is very small and I don't cramp or anything - I just get sooo tired. Weird isn't it?

I've been eating 1200-1500 calories a day and I am pretty satisfied with my diet. As I just mentioned too, I have been getting into weight lifting a little bit. The trainer I met with had me focus on triceps, chest, and abs twice per week and back, abs, and other core the other two days. As some of you know, I used to play basketball in high school and this weight training is absolutely completely different than what we used to do to train for b-ball. I do low weight sets of 12. I go to each machine once, do ten minutes of hard cardio, and then do the cycle again. I am sure he (trainer) knows what he's doing - but I'd like to work legs and some other muscle groups in there too.

Anyway - hope all of you are doing well and have a great weekend.

hey Catie,

Funny I was updating my diary and then was gonna jump on yours for not posting in a fewday, gotta keep you on the ball lol, but you beat me too it!

So it sounds like your in the same kinda boat as me recently. I have good run days and bad days. Its weird like yesterday I felt so drained during my run. I mean I wasn't like out of breath but my legs were so so just outta it I guess. Its all good you need those recovery days. I try to make sure that I take at least one day where I don't run. Ill walk or lift or something just to give my legs a break from all the concrete.

I know what you mean about the Ipod by the way. I cannot run without it. And by cannot I mean ever. I am so dependent on having taht. It keeps me from hearing how awful I must sound hoofing it along lol.

I would agree pack your self a lunch and some granola bars or fruit or some small things, string cheese even. Just little snacks on your school days too keep you eating. You know this and your right you cannot keep going yogurt in the morning and then nothing till dinner. I'll look at some of the snacks I enjoy and I can give you their cals and such but I keep all taht at home on my home PC. Once your into eh habit of putting taht all together it really becomes second nature.

I love that you played basketball, I did, well still do, and its such great cardio. DO you play still? If your in school you might look into the rec leagues that at least is one night a week of nice fun cardio.

anyway Hope all is well, Have a great weekend!

Sometimes it is a pain in the ass to bring food to school, but it is really important to do so. Don't sweat more meals a day to raise your metabolism...it actually works more for body composition than anything else.

The training regimen your trainer has you on seems haphazard. I'd need to know more about the other two days of training to get a better feel for it though.

Training and hard exercise will put you in a deficit so that those pounds will start coming off. It seems youve hit a bit of a plateau...keep at it, and I'm sure you can get down to 165 by Christmas (160 might be pushing it!)

I'm excited to see how good you look when you get down to your target weight!

Michael

Thanks for your thoughts! Yeah - you are right about it being a pain in the ass to bring food to school but I just need to get over it.

Yes- I am plateau-ing (is that even a word with the "ing"?).. But I am determined to try anything to keep on moving forward and losing this weight.

I am interested to know your thoughts about the training - and what I can be doing to get better results. Again, thank you!

Thanks to some very good advice I had an amazing workout today and feel soooo good! Thanks Michael!

I went to the gym and lifted arm weights and worked out my legs for the first time in too-long (haha) and came back home and went for a run in my neighborhood. I felt like a million bucks! This may sound really sad, but I am so excited because today is the first day in 3 years that I have run a mile in under 10 minutes. I ran a 9:54. It was not easy by any means - but am proud of myself.

A great day - a very long time ago I could run a mile in 6:47... I don't even think I'll be able to get back there - but I would love to run 3 miles in under thirty minutes. In fact, I have been challenged to do so by my very supportive father (in exchange for some cash!).. I need to get on the ball ASAP with the running ordeal...

Anyways- just thought I'd prove that I could post something positive :) because I've been so negative sounding lately.

I'm off to the movies - anyone seen Gone Baby Gone?

I have finally broken the seemingly everlasting plateau - I woke up today at 186 and pretty excited. My goal is to be 184 by this time next week - and get in the 170's WAY soon! I'm pretty pumped.

I am going out to eat tonight with a friend - I usually aviod eating out. I think I am going to suggest Applebee's so I can order from the weight watcher menu. I plan on exercising in the next few hours so that will be good too.

Hope everyone is having a good day:)

hey Catie!

Big time congratz on getting to 184! Your going to be in the 170's in no time! How great will that feel? I can imagine you will be really pumped. I hope your workout went really well. Keep up the fantastic work!

Crossing my fingers the rain will hold off for my run this afternoon. But it is seattle so its not likely..... argh

hey Catie haven't seen a post from you in a few days I bet your really busy with school and such But just wondering how the loss's are going? Hope all is well!

hey, good on you!

Been dashing all over the planet last couple of days, hence my silence. just thought to check out the posts of all those who've been kind enough to encourage me, and i find you're making good progress - well done!

Also - thanks Travis for all your encouragment as well..

So today is a pretty good day in that i am 2 pounds lighter than I was on the 28th - I'm 31 down - and 184 pounds. So ready for 170's. Things are busy and hectic but I will do a major catch up post very soon.

Love you guys!

31 down woohoo go you! Hope things settle down for you too so you can relax and not feel so hectic. Big congrats ont eh weight loss your doing awesome! Can't wait to hear how you do this week!

Oh basketball playoffs start this week we snagged the #2 seed. Should be fun we seem to struggle in the playoffs every year but maybe things will change this time around.

aight im off Congratz again! You rock!

Thanks for the message Travis!

I have been so so so busy with school and everything and can't wait for December 14 when finals are over and life will slow down a lot. I am still weighing in at 184, but I did do body mesaurements on Sunday (I did them two weeks before that) and was overjoyed by the results. I lost 1 1/2 inches on my upper arms by all the weightlifting I'd started. So excited.

I hope to be 181 by the 9th - but that may be pushing it. I'll do my best. Unforunately, I have a horrible cold and can't really handle much cardio right now but I think I'm going to go to the gym later and lift some weights and maybe ride the bike or something.

Somemore frustating news - after November 28 my left wrist will be in a brace for 6 weeks. I'm hoping this means that I can still lift weights normally. I meant to ask the doctor that today. Last year I had a ganglyian cyst removed on my left wrist removed and I wasn't very happy with the scar, and as of today neither was the plastic surgeon. He is going to "fix it up" for free which is very nice of him. I will be getting the scar kind of cut out and my wrist re-stitched up. Because there is so much movement around that joint the stitches loosen easily, which is why he wants me in a brace for at least 6 weeks to make sure it heals properly. Hopefully it will be no big deal. I am right handed, so I'm going in with the mentality of let's just get this done and over with and my wrist looking normaly again lol. But I will let you guys know what he says about the left arm weight lifting.

Hope everyone is doing well. Love you guys!
