The Porky Pilot's Log

This is the start to my weight loss diary. If you are interested I posted a brief introduction to myself here:

http://weight-loss.fitness.com/newcomers/19889-starting-over-again.html#post407051

This is my first time keeping a diary at all. I'm basically doing this so I can feel like I'm being held accountable to somebody else. This really seemed to work for me when I was a weight watcher, but I can't really go to meetings nor can I afford to.

Anyway, to kick things off here are my day 1 stats:

Weight: 280.8 lbs
Height: 6'0"
Waist: 50"
Age: 27

I've just started a new career as an airline pilot (just finished training). My biggest concern is what I will be able to eat when I'm at work. Mostly, there is just fast food in the airports, and it will be really hard to pack for four days at a time. Any suggestions?

Anyway, I'm going to try to post everyday. I am going to do a weekly weigh-in every Tuesday.

Thanks everybody, I look forward to your comments and suggestions.

Some airports have a little healthier fare -doesn't mean you're subjected to dressingless salads - there's always better choices at every place... the downside though is hotel dining -- and watching portions there... you can always keep ziplock snack sizes baggies in your suitcase with portioned out nuts, or pretzels or other snacks that won't kill you...

Airline food isn't going to be the best either - it's really jsut a matter of being mindful of what you're eating and just because it's available -doesn't mean you have to eat it...

Are you flying for a major carrier? Sounds like a fun career...

I've never even been in a plane! Or helicopter, or hang-glider..

But the skydiving school told me I could jump at 280! So soon I'll be going..you don't by chance fly for a diving school eh?

Remember if you cant watch what you eat, watch how much you eat. Stay away from mayo and you should be ok. Order a ton of extra pickles/lettuce/tomatoes on those fast food sandwiches and eat less of them!

Ketchup has like 10 calories per serving, mustard has 0, so go to town.

Welcome to the WLF.

Looks like you will have a little more work to do than some with the lack of options to home, but that also at times can be a good thing.

If you have access to internet and know what restaurants will be where you are, check a list of the nutritional data before hand. If it's not listed, you can get some good ideas on other websites like thedailyplate.com and I'm sure there are others. Some restaurants like to trick you and label something "low fat" when it's only lower compared to the 100G Fat in their other meals.

When you are buying products that you can read the package labels, look for Saturated Fat and stay as low as possible.. and no more than 2-3G Sat Fat per serving and try not to eat anything with Trans Fat in it.

Maybe you can pack some fruits (bananas, oranges, apples) to take with you for snacks and some whole wheat bread and natural peanut or almond butter for sandwiches during lunch.

Anyway, welcome again! :waving:

Day 1

Today was a good first day. I spent the whole day at home alone, which is always hard for me since boredom generally makes me want to eat. However, I did good and when I was hungry I ate healthy snacks. Here is what I ate today

Breakfast: 1 1/2 cups shredded wheat, 1 cup n/f milk

Snack: 1/2 cup strawberries, 1/2 cup n/f yogurt

Lunch: 2 cups garden vegetable soup, 1 boca burger sandwich

Snack: 1 banana

Dinner: 3 steak fajita's (barley, beans, onions, peppers, tomatoes, steak, n/f wrap)

All in all I'm happy and proud of myself. I had to go out today and buy larger pants for my new uniform and that only made me more motivated to get back to my smaller waist size. The only thing that would have been better would be if I had drank more water. I'll try better tomorrow.

Day 2

Ok, so day two was a bit harder and a bit easier. I spent the entire day traveling by plane and train. I had to eat out, but I had two bowls of soup and a large salad. I also bought a sandwich for dinner, but I didn't have time to eat (I am now eating the sandwich). All in all a good day. Tomorrow I'll try to get some exercise in the hotel and keep an eye on my diet.

Day 3

I had a great day today. Very relaxing and restful morning and afternoon. Good news! I started the "Couch to 5k" program on my ipod. I'm pretty excited about this and the first day was fairly easy. About 2 years ago I did a couple 5k's and now I'm back to square one, but at least I'm working again.
