The mind is the enemy

For sure. It's always encouraging to see someone succeed. I appreciate you stopping into my diary too.

Do you happen to know what my user name means?

Q, I do! We're both Oaks! But I have to admit I only know that because in a previous life I used to post here under a different user name, so I remembered you. But my 'Oaks' is short for Oklahoma. Which is a Native American word meaning "red people" so I'm either red or a people. The jury is still out on that one.

Well the Houma tribal name means red so that would make you "people" I believe. Now I'm curious as to who you used to be. You could PM me if you don't want to share here, but I'm fine if you'd rather not say at all. I'm trying to remember former Oakies, but I'm drawing a blank.

I was born in Oklahoma but I'm a new Englander now. You once sent me a recipe for cheese :)

Tuesday is almost done, and I am overall very happy with the day.

You already heard about me getting my behind to the gym (woo hoo). In addition, I had made it my goal to do two yoga videos and one pushups/squats workout by Wednesday. Well, those are DONE! The yoga videos I like are short.... around 15 minutes each. Long enough to feel an effect but short enough for me to do a couple on a weeknight. Tonight I did one to stretch the neck and back, and one called "morning flow." Admittedly they were more calm and relaxing than usual, but my neck was crazy sore all day, and I also ran. My body wanted calm and relaxing.

Food for the day went like this:

Breakfast - Pumpkin pie smoothie. YUM.
Snack - 1 homemade chocolate graham cracker, 1 serving of store bought crackers from Trader Joe's
Lunch - Cottage cheese, dehydrated fruit, bell peppers. I'd guess roughly four oz of each.
Snack - KIND bar (200 calories)
Dinner - Black beans and rice
Dessert - 2 rolls of Smarties [update: see next post]

Pros: Everything was pretty natural/unprocessed. Except for the Smarties. I love my smoothie base. Plain greek yogurt, unsweetened soy milk, chia seeds, 1 banana, and oats. To this one I added pumpkin puree and lots of yummy spices.

Cons: I didn't give my body enough food early in the day. I had to fight hard not to eat junk for an afternoon snack, and my stomach was growling off and on all day. Also, I should have had a vegetable with dinner. And not just because it was way too spicy and I could have used something to cool my mouth off.

Tomorrow needs to be another running day in order to meet my 4 day goals. There has been no alcohol since Saturday, and no sneaky snacking since Saturday.

Well, I posted yesterday before sitting down to watch a little tv before bed. And then I got the sleepy munchies. Chips and salsa, followed by two dark chocolate cookie butter cups. Bah. I know I wasn't eating out of hunger; it was before my normal bedtime but I was exhausted, and eating was keeping me awake. Next time I just need to go to bed even if it is only 9:30!

On the plus side, I just got back from an early morning run. 2.1 miles, 25:49. I never run two days in a row, and I was feeling it today. There was a hill on my route, and I'm sure to a passerby it would have appeared I was standing still on it... but I knew how much effort that snail's pace was taking me so I'm cool with it. It was dark out there, and foggy. The headlamp was a must but it was warm and there was a few bunnies hopping around.

Chips and salsa are my absolute favourite--Such a bad snack but so goooood! I try having home-made crisps with hummous or a low-fat dip. You just slice potatos insanely thinly and then microwave them for a while, keep checking on them, and spray with a low-cal oil or spray and they crisp up just like chips! OR bake potato peelings with salt and paprika--that makes chips too :D

Nice 24 hours, Oaklee, keep up the good work! Late night snacks, ugh, I don't know the cure for those. Gobs of water if you don't mind getting up at 2 in the morning.

And if you plan on having kids, get as much sleep as you can now! Trust me!

Potato peeling with salt and paprika??? Hana, where were on Sunday day when I was peeling potatos for stew??? Those sound delicious. I'd add some cumin, I think. Cumin is my answer to everything.

Tea is definitely one solid answer to late night eating, L to the J..... But that seemed like so much work at the time. I mean, there's water, and a tea bag. And you have to HEAT the water! Oh, the humanity.

They're lovely Oaks--you must try them. I dip mine in low-fat sour cream and chive dip. GORGEOUS. They go so crisp and lovely :) And it uses up wasted peelings! Might have to try my next lot with cumin..sounds lovely. Have a lovely day chick xo

Now that winter is near my usual response to "what do you want for dinner" is "something with potatos" so I am definitely going to remember this.

I knew you'd be excited about my run, Q! The last time I wore a headlamp while running was during an overnight relay. And a sweaty boy had worn it before me.

Anyone want to hear about my big plans for this Halloween weekend? Well, if any of you said yes, please picture me chopping up fruit for a big dehydrating session! Yes, you heard that right, I am so excited for the weekend so I can bust out the dehydrator. I've got bananas, strawberries, apples, raspberries, and peaches. Of these fruits, I've only done bananas before, so I'm looking forward to seeing how all these come out.

LaMa, the raspberries concern me too but I'm going to see how they do. Mostly I hope they actually last until the weekend, they tend to spoil so quickly!

Vee, the fruit is supposed to last from 6 months to a year or even longer, if you do it right. I only made my first (small) batch a few weeks ago, so I can't speak from experience yet. My plums still had some moisture in them, so those I keep in the fridge. But the bananas and kiwis I'm keeping in glass in the pantry. So far so good, everything is still delicious.

Two interesting things I've been thinking about recently:

(1) On Sunday, I was half asleep on the couch and woke myself up enough to inform the BF I was going to bed. As I walk past the kitchen I instantly thought "Oh, what should I bring to bed to eat?" Because that's my routine. I go anywhere by myself in the house and I eat. It's not a good habit, and one that I really need to be more aware of. Those moments like that, where it was clear I wasn't experiencing real hunger, those are the killers.

(2) Last night I polished off my chips and salsa and said to BF "I want to go into the kitchen and wash my hands but I'm afraid I'll come back with a cookie butter cup in my mouth" (direct quote). He didn't judge, or argue, but merely pointed out his observation that I do get extremely hungry the minute I start exercising more. Just one day of running and he's noticing a new eating pattern. That's not to say I don't snack at night when I'm not running, but the styles and habits are just different . Usually my nights involve standing in the kitchen opening each cabinet a few times, in varying sequences, before settling on something. Or me whining about wanting a snack for twenty minutes and asking what I should have. Not last night, though. Last night I was focused. It just makes me wonder how I should go about getting my body what it needs. Sodium right after a run, maybe? I'm a sweaty stinky beast afterwards. Protein for sure. How do I balance increased needs with desired losses? So much to think about.

Maybe saying these things are 'interesting' is a bit of a stretch, but thanks for letting my get my thoughts out regardless.

In regards to the above, I realize that being hungrier when you work out is not a new concept or a rare problem, but for some reason it fascinated me that someone else was pointing out a change in routine. Having it externalized by an outside source makes more of an impact, guess.

Might be other electrolytes too, potassium for example. Maybe a simple banana will help? Do you work out on an empty stomach or do you get some carbs in first? I think it´s normal for your body to feel different when you start treating it differently, good on you for being so aware of it.
