The mind is the enemy

Here's a thought - you have a food dehydrator, you need protein and sodium, how about making jerky (beef or turkey)? I used to have a dehydrator and made it all the time, I'd marinate it in some kind of brine and dehydrate it for eight (?) hours. More beef jerky than you can shake a stick at! Plus it's really chewy so it takes a long time to eat it. A piece of that and a pint of water before you go to bed might be the ticket.

Hmmmm... wonder if I need a food dehydrator now?!

Weigh in today was 160.2. It was a couple pounds higher on Monday, but I was also coming off of a few extra high sodium meals. I'm heading in the right direction and hopefully next week I can be in the 150s again.

I think jerky sounds like a great idea, LJ. We actually have a large stock of beef jerky arriving in the mail any day now, but after we deplete that a little I'll experiment. I'm guessing it's cheaper to make your own? I get stingy with weird things, and jerky is one of them. It's so expensive! But delicious! Where did your food dehydrator go?? Our contraption was taking up space in our extra pantry for years, I was pumped to finally put it to use.

LaMa, potassium could definitely be something I'm missing, although I do enjoy bananas somewhat regularly. I try to have a smoothie a few times a week, and every smoothie I make has one in it. There's a fruit bowl at work, meaning I've got no excuse for missing out on fresh fruit any weekday!

For anyone keeping track, I met ALL of my four day goals!

-Abstain from liquor and beer (wine is allowed)
-Avoid sneaky snacking
-Run twice
-Do one squats/pushups workout
-Complete 2 short yoga videos

I didn't even have any wine. Now the key will be making and and sticking to some weekend goals.

You know, for as big as it was, I have no idea where it went. I'm guess it was left behind when I moved to CT a while ago. I can dehydrate with the oven, too, but the dehydrator made things so easy.

I'm looking up how to do it now....

I feel you on the eating more when you start exercising .. I thought I was going crazy wanting to eat EVERYTHING in the house. i'm glad you mentioned it's normal!

Well done on the weight loss - sounds like you're doing great!

My increased appetite on running days abates a little once I settle into a routine. I still usually have an increse when I push especially hard. I have found that drinking a lot of water post run helps. Coconut water is pretty low cal (compared to juice). The stuff I get is 45 calories for 8 ounces. I mix in 8 oz with 40 oz of water in my mega nalgene bottle and drink that. It's hard to over eat or feel super hungry drinking that much.

It's all a very individual experiment and as long as you are thinking about what your behaviors are and what your body needs you will figure it out.

Great job on the loss! You'll hit the 150s soon.

Well done on meeting all of your goals! I tried yoga today (with a proper DVD routine, not just picking randomly on the Wii Fit!) and it was HARD! Props to you for doing TWO today!

Incidentally, why do you allow wine? I've cut out alcohol (weekdays) for both weight and financial reasons, I always thought wine was really bad in terms of calories?

Yay for the goals reached! Jealous of the fruit today, mine has run out :( Market day tomorrow! Also: thinking hard of jerky...

Lots of lovely comments to read! They are getting me through this slow work day :p

To answer your question Lou, I allow myself wine because I know I can handle my relationship with it, versus my over indulgent relationship with beer or liquor (I'm an all-inclusive drinker, I like everything). We like to open a bottle with dinner if we're having steak, or pasta, or something hearty. I'll have two glasses and am perfectly content. But if I were to make myself, say, a Malibu Black and pineapple, it's much more likely that I'm going to have five more and wake up on the couch at 3 am with the TV blaring. Or if I'm out with friends all of a sudden I'm four vodka sodas deep on a Thursday night. Compared to THOSE nights, two glasses of wine makes a whole lot of financial and caloric sense!!

^ haha yes I suppose it does! So it's a case of personal preference and moderation as opposed to calorie content on principle? I will drink wine like you drink beer/liquor. I'd easily sink a bottle a night. I don't feel like I've missed out on the wine now lol, whatever works ay!

Lou, personal preference and moderation sounds pretty accurate. I'm trying hard to focus on bad habits and trigger points, and fortunately drinking wine has never been habitual.

Oh, and I forgot to mention to you that I would in no way consider my two yoga workouts to be properly difficult! They are less than twenty minutes each. I'm trying to work up the nerve to attempt the P90X yoga at least partially. I think it would leave me unable to walk right now if I attempted the whole thing!

Q, you inspired me to analyze my hydrating tactics. I'm only good with drinking water when I'm in the office, 9-5 M-F. After a morning workout I may have a few sips at 7am before I hop in the shower but then I'm most likely done until 9. Not a good routine! I'm curious, do you add coconut water to dilute the taste? Or save money? I tried it once and thought it was awful but it's stocked in our fridge at work so I can easily try it again diluted a bit.

It tastes a bit skunky straight but it is really good natural low cal hydration. I used to mix it with OJ and diet ginger ale which was yummy. Now to avoid the juice calories and the soda I just dilute it and it tastes much better. I buy coconut water for the ice chest when I work out in the heat. It's very refreshing and I don't mind the taste if I'm hot and thirsty and it's ice cold. When I dilute it I notice the coconut flavor more than the funk you get straight, but it's really mild. To me it tastes much better than low cal gatorade or zero cal powerade. I really don't need it this time of year, but when I work outdoors and then run outdoors when it's 100+ and humid it is difficult to not get muscle cramps with just straight water and regularly drinking quarts of colored chemicals doesn't seem wise.

Oaks - have you tried infusing your water? A slice of orange in the water, over night, makes it quite sweet (I have a sweet tooth). There are heaps of different mixes (mint and lime = mojito flavoured!), and it can feel like cheating with juice. I personally find juice delicious, but it gives me an instant sugar headache (boo), but infusing water seems to help.

I don't infuse often, maybe once a week, but I'd love to get into it more. I love lemon water, or strawberries in water. I'm keen to try other mixes.. but I also drink a lot of plain water. You can infuse with coconut water and fizzy water too :)

Oh, Thursday nights.... Thursday nights with co-workers is a weakness of mine. I should have gone home, eaten some leftover pad thai (homemade) and gone to bed early. Instead I had some drinks, some nachos, a quesadilla, and at 11 PM found myself helping a recent college grad find his way home after I discovered him laying drunk on the street, unable to say where he lived. ::sigh:: Everything turned out OK, he's lucky he didn't get robbed or taken to jail, and I'm lucky I stayed safe in a situation that could have turned bad.

Needless to say I was not thinking about calories or weight last night, or this morning as I scarfed down a bagel before heading to work. Goals for this weekend are a must. Weather is supposed to be gross but hopefully I can sneak in a run. A proper yoga workout will be a great indoor activity, plus a squats & pushups workout.

Hey - you potentially saved a life, that's gotta be worth something! It was cold last night, for sure.

Gross weekends are the worst. I was planning on planing off the first layer of leaves tomorrow, but not gonna happen if they're wet. Maybe I'll take some on tonight when I get home, depending on when I do get home! If you're looking for some exercise this weekend, come to Connecticut, I have a rake and everything!

The New Oaks slogan:

It's not a party 'til you've helped the needy!

I'm glad you stayed safe. Good luck with the weekend. I'll be freezing my butt off in a deer stand and then Monday starts the 5AM BS.
