The Jump Pullup <-- Awesome Exercise

I was reading through a magazine in Men's Fitness where I found "The Jump Pullup". I tried it myself and it was great. Before I could never feel my back muscles being worked but now I can really feel it. Plus it is alot funner and more challenging then the boring lat pulldown.
This exercise is for people who can't do strict pullups and it is suppose to help you out. I hope it does because I can't do one pull-up yet.

USE IT IN PLACE OF: The lat pull-down
HOW TO DO IT: Go to a chinup bar and get into a pushup position directly beneath it. Perform and explosive pushup [1] ( so that you come up with speed), then, using the momentum, immediately jump upward and grap the bar [2]. Go right into a pullup [3]. That's one rep. Now drop to the floor and repeat. Do 10 sets of 3 reps, resting 45-60 seconds between sets.
THE BENEFIT: "This is a great exercise for those who can't do strict pullups," says Todd Hamer, a strength coach at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. "This is one way to teach the body to do pullups correctly, while training a host of other muscles." If that weren't enough, the jump pullup also helps you develop explosive pushing, jumping, and pulling strength, all of which are important for a number of competitive sports- rock climbing in particular.

1. funner is not a word (Sorry, but I hold a degree in English and can't allow fake words to be used...its nothing personal)

2. I can see this working, but its really no different than an assisted pullup, and I'd argue its no more effective than using lat pulldowns to get your back up to speed so you can do regular pull-ups. I also think too many novice trainees will lack the coordination to do this correctly and safely.

honestly, I can picture myself slamming my head into the beam above the pullup station at my gym.

as a whole I do see the benefits to this explosive, almost full body, compound move.

looks like a force exercise - doesnt look good

do lat pulldowns until you can do a regular pull up. jump pullups is forcing your body to do a pullup and you can injure yourself easily. What if you are doing a jump pullup and accidently miss the bar, you'll fall and hurt yourself

I like explosive pull-ups better. All the way down and all the way up as fast as you can. If you want to throw your body into it, do so.

Actually I did injure myself doing these, ironic how I was the one that posted this thread. But it was mostly my fault, not the exercise I wasn't looking when I came down, the side of my foot hit a lat-pulldown seat and thats how I twisted my ankle when I came down.

Its a great exercise really, and its a good compound movement works your whole body. Great way to end a workout imo.
