The Heart of a Champion

My name is Adam, I'm 25 and currently I weigh 232. I joined a gym and started eating healthy last week and I have lost 5 lbs so far (I weigh myself on Tuesday mornings).

A bit about me....my weight has definately been a roller coaster. Growing up I was always athletic and in shape...I played sports and never had to worry about what I ate or how much. My sophomore and junior years of high school I had two different knee injuries on my same knee. The second injury was right after I returned from the first and was truly devestating. I was unable to play basketball my senior year of high school and that is when I first started to gain some weight. I maybe gained 15 lbs or so. I knew I was out of shape but I didn't really consider myself fat. Over my first few years of college I steadily put on weight and reached 220. About 4 years ago I realized I had to regain my health. I quickly dedicated myself to the gym and eating healthy. I lost 55 lbs over about 6 months and reached my ideal weight of 165.

I maintained this weight for about 3 years. Over the past year I have just let myself go. I moved to a new city and I just let my job consume my life. I dealt with all the stress by turning to food. Over the past 12 months my weight balooned from 165 to 237. To me, looking at those numbers, it doesn't even seem like that would be possible. I stepped on a scale about a week ago and I couldn't belive I weighed 237.

So, this is my journal and I am going to try to post in it everyday. I started at 237 a week, I'm currently 232 and here are my short term goals:

1. Lose 72 lbs and reach my ideal weight of 165 by May 9, 2009
2. Run the Riverbank Run 25K on May 9, 2009

Pretty simple goals. My diet plan is simple....eat healthy, low fat, low calorie, balanced meals, high in protein with lots of fruits and veggies. My workout includes running, cardio and weight lifting. Once I am under 200, I will start playing full court pickup basketball again, but until I lose some weight, I don't want to risk hurting my knee again.

I am hoping to meet a lot of people and provide enoucragement as we all work to reach our goals.

And last but not least, my favorite quote (and hence the name of my journal):

"Never underestimate the heart of a champion." -Coach Rudy T. of the Houston Rockets
