The free weights room

Yeah i used to think the same but you get over it after a while...thing that annoys me most is having the girl at the front desk ask how my day was every time i sign in with my key card...but yeah no one cares really dude and curling 30 and benching 40 is fine! unless thats your one rep max ? Thinking that people where looking at me when lifting really affected my strength as well but i dont even care anymore when i make tons of noise and my face goes bright red and i am dripping wet lol

It is universal for the chick to say hey in a really annoying voice everytime you go in and out?

I guess I've just got to pluck up the confidence one day and go in, sooner the better. I think my friend who got me signed up to the gym is signing up again soon so, should be able to get in there with him aswell.

And from the previous page, no, I wasn't planning on doing side crunches in the squat rack.

Everyone at the gym seems polite and cheerful. It's just there's the odd few now and then that are together and piss around, taking their tops off and having a tank top on underneith even though there not all that great. Looking around and checking if anyones watching them.

Lol, where are you from? That sounds like the gyms near me

I'm in the same situation as you. I started going to the gym a little over three months ago and I signed up with a personal trainer. I'm not in very good shape and the bench press is always something that I've been afraid of. Yesterday afternoon, my PT took me to the bench for the first time in my routine and I wound up doing 115lbs. Afterwards I realized that it wasn't as bad as I made it out to be. It's all in your mind man. Don't psyche yourself out.

My first time on the bench I had trouble with an empty bar; I just couldn't seem to push up in a straight line :yelrotflmao:

Ha-ha! I know that grumpy wander all too well.

As for new gyms, I travel some for work. You should have seen me the first time I had to figure out doing the math to convert from kgs to lbs while grumpily wandering around looking for stuff in a new gym.

Even worse, I couldn't find the 1.25 kgs plates, since they were all stored in the same place. I knew they had to exist - but maybe not? I couldn't figure out for the life of me how people made gains if they had to up the bar by 2.5 kg on each side (so 11 lbs) everytime they wanted to increase weight!!!

Bottom line for Curtis: We're all new and lost sometimes, even when we're 'old,' ya know? And a good attitude cures all. :jump1:

I'm from near manchester and go to the JJB gym.

I had a look noisey in today and see what was there as some guy , there's afew things I think.. wtf?! at.. but it seemed alright in there. I'm going to go in when no ones in there one day and do some squats or something (mainly just to see whats where)

Gym was packed upstairs today, put me off being there but there was abit of a quiet gab for about 30 mins where I could actaully have a free selection.

Was funny though. There was this group of guys, 4 of them. I just thought..Wtf.. It's like they were dressed to go down the pub or something. Anyways, alittle bit of amusement is nice. They took turns doing dips and who ever wasn't in action stood around in a circle watching the guy working.

I work out at home now, but went to an iron pumping gym as you described for years. I don't think I ever heard someone make fun of someone for lifting a light weight...unless maybe they were buddies and just giving each other a hard time. You'll probably have people helping you out

How'd you get motivated at home? I'd probably just drift off after afew minutes and do something else.

I don't know, I think it just depends on your personality. I'm a homebody. I don't thrive on being around people, it's exhausting to me. I'm a stay at home dad and sometimes I'll go 4-5 days without even driving my car anywhere. I just got a notice in the mail that it's time for an oil change, but the gauge in my car says my engine oil life is at 65% LOL

Sounds like you've got plenty of time on your hands, so you've got to do something eventually I guess. I'd probably like being at home etc myself as you can just chill. Does your wife work long hours or something?

Nice to see someone quite local Tom :beerchug:

I think you might be quite surprised about that. Taking care of two toddlers 24 hours a day is quite a job. It's been estimated that stay-at-home parents work the equivalent of 2 full time jobs. I get up at 6 AM because that's the only time I have to myself all day to work out.

Much respect GoochMAN! Yes, taking care of two toddlers is no piece of cake. I KNOW first hand, brotha! Keep your health in your spirit and let your children enjoy it with you! ROCK ON!

We need more fathers in this world like you!

Best regards,

Chillen

aw, shucks!:D

...and if I tell you I can't remember the last time I took a shower alone it's not as glamorous as it sounds at first!LOL

I know what you mean. Fathers are a strange bread. We even buy our children things that we KNOW are going to irritate the crap out of us. And, get upset (sometimes) when it happens. LOL. And, then go out and do it again.

What the.....?.:)

Hey Curtis, simply being in "the big boys room" and showing that you are there to learn, use right form and grow will be enough to earn you all the respect you'll need. The first comments you are likely to hear are "hey, looks like you're getting bigger" or something similar. It's almost like a "welcome to the group" commaraderie. Us fitness freaks love new converts.

Example: I used to do some bodybuilding in high school and worked out at a super hardcore gym where many HUGE people worked out. This was an old school gym with a cement floor, very poor lighting and the old tin tile looking things on the ceiling. The professional wrestlers would come to this gym when they were in town. It was cool. Funny thing is it was probably the best gym I've ever been to. People were really interested in how you were doing, how your training was going etc. Everyone was always willing to help. It was a great environment. Point being, become a regular in the free weight room and before long you'll be one of the gang. Good luck and good training. Greg

when i went to the gym for the first time with some mates from school, i was a bit nervous and had no idea how to use the machines, but doing freeweights i was outlifting all of them  but theres still guys benching like 200kg that are going to intimidate anyone, the best thing to do is try not to make yourself look like a d!ck.
