The Ferret Returns!

awesome diary

Wow. Haven't been here in a while but what I just read was so awesome.

I just don't want to lose mobility as a senior because I spent my earlier decades doing nothing. I am just kicking up my walking program with aerobics.

I look forward to more of your journal.

Thank you Happychubette for visiting my online diary, I'm glad that you found something of interest laying among my rather boring and probably inaccurate Fitday stats ;) Its not too late to turn things around is it? For 43 years, I didn't exercise, play sports, or eat very well. Increasingly as I aged, I ate badly, drank badly, played badly. I have no doubts in my mind that as long as Wolfy doesn't drag me out in front of a double decker bus, that I have added years of good health to my life span - in only 12 months! If I hadn't changed lifestyle, where would that road had taken me? Heart disease? Liver failure? Accidental death? Who knows, but the chances were that I wouldn't have lived as long or as well.

I am addicted to fitness now - the worse type of fitness fanatic, a 'born-again' fitness freak ;) and in my mid forties too - what a good mid-life crisis :) Good luck with the aerobics!

Oh no! Heh heh, only kidding - your advice is always welcome here Steve :)

Right, I finally have statistics from my first month of tracking using Fitday.com. I don't pretend that its a perfect record, but I think that the consumption stats are pretty realistic - although I don't like or trust the way that Fitday counts my calories burnt.

Fitday suggests that my average calories burnt per day is .... 3,260. As I said, I don't think that Fitday counts calories burnt very well. I don't input any labour done at work, but instead, choose 'Strenuous work (construction)' as my lifestyle level. I actually work shifts in a power station, and my work is a mix of heavy work out on the plant, and lighter control room work.

I changed my lifestyle 12 months ago or so. Until then, I was an average middle aged slob, drinking too much booze and eating lots of junk, whilst never exercising. I developed my own programmes of running with Wolfy, dog-walking, and strength training at gym (without the dog .... they wouldn't let him in after he urinated on the treadmill).

I changed my diet to 'healthy balanced', and started reading snatches here on there about nutrition. Just recently, I have been influenced both by a 'natural evolutionary' diet (eating lots of natural wholesome food, e.g green leafy vegetables, berries, nuts, fish etc) and by the strength trainer's diet (plenty of lean protein, good fats, smart carbs, eating small and often, tracking macro nutrients and calories, etc.) I also eat lots of fibre, and try to eat plenty of fresh, organic (when I can afford it), and whenever possible ... seasonal and local food.

Using the above, I have lost some 55 pounds. I still feel that I have a little more body fat than I would like, but at 138 pounds, and being a 5ft 8" bloke, I think that its time to stop cutting.

The following Average Daily Calories are based over the past month. At first, I was cutting, and consumed around 2,100 calories per day. I have since upped that to around 2,600 calories per day.

Total (daily average): 2304

I'm especially proud of the 0% alcohol for a month ... but I'm planning on partying this weekend ;)

Thanks Happychubette :) We are having a break from the kids and dog for a couple of nights - the first for a very long time! I'm just going to take Mrs Ferret to the cinema and maybe a meal out on Friday; but on Saturday we are going to London on a works outing - London pubs, then to the West End for a show, and finally a restaurant :)

Yesterday's Daily Fitday Stats.

Calories burnt: 3388
Calories consumed: 3214!

Exercise: Strength training at gym: squats, cleans, deadlifts. 2.2 mile bike ride with Wolfy harnessed. 2 mile dog-walk later.

I can't believe that I consumed 3214 calories yesterday! At least it was all clean food ;) I did have an extra portion of meat yesterday - a lamb escallope and peanut butter sandwich! Later, I had some lovely lean venison steaks - poor Bambi :( Yum.

Daily Fitday Stats.

Calories burnt: 3587
Calories consumed: 3232!!

Exercise: Strength training at gym: bench presses, inclined bench presses, dumbbell flies. Unsuccessfully tried shoulder presses, but arthritis put paid to that :( .
4 mile bike-ride with Wolfy, including some difficult cross-trail in the wind.

Oh dear, I'm not sure if I am consuming too many calories. I am trying to eat now more for strength and training than to lose weight, but I keep ending the day a little high. I'm not too sure where I should be aiming - maybe the scales will guide me over the next few weeks.
