The Diary of Madness

Hey Madness!

Good on you for carrying on, even after negative results! Now you sound on track and on the way to a healthier you!

I'm Anke by the way!

Hey Anke, thanks for stopping by! I'm finally on track and things are looking good. I'm almost back down to my pre-diet weight. :p Isn't that silly? I have to lose weight to get down to where I started when I began the diet! Ah well, that's life for me!

I'm pretty sure I'm going to miss my first goal - it was to weigh 195 by tomorrow. I was 197.5 this morning. But I'm close! I knew it would be hard to reach, but it was motivating to try to get there!

Reminds me of my mom always insisting that we clean the house before the cleaning lady arrived because she didn't want the cleaning lady to knwo that we were really slobs :D

Hehehehehe... I know so many people like that! My grandmother, on the other hand, points out the dust she swept under the carpet, just in case you didn't see! And she moans about how she doesn't have tiiiime to clean! :)

Goal Update

GOALS

Longterm goal: 150 lbs by the end of 2008

First short term goal (set May 26): 195 lbs by summer solstice (June 20)
(this is a big goal and I might not make it, but I need to push myself in the beginning to get this going!)

Result: 196.2 lbs! I got darn close and I'm proud!

Second short term goal (set June 20): 180 lbs by the Summer CrossQuarter - Aug 2nd. We are having a big party then...it would be so nice to be 180!

The Irish called this Lughnasad. Now the Irish call it "A bank holiday"

^ I was actually trying to convince my fiance to watch Dancing at Lughnasa that night, but he doesn't like "chick flicks".

Never saw it. Is it good? I'm not opposed to chick flix, but they have to be good.

On a sad note, one of my hives swarmed yesterday. I'm so bummed. I was at work and my wife called me and told me it was happening. Don't know where they went or we would have gone for them. I'm bummed about that. :(

Umm, so how do you usually keep them from swarming... and why would they randomly swarm? Please explain! :)

They'll swarm if they don't have enough space, which is my problem this time. I was supposed to add some boxes last week, but didn't. Really stupid on my part.

I think it's a good movie. It's about 5 sisters who are struggling with life in Ireland in the 1930s. Very interesting time period for that country.

Oh, that sucks! I just read recently that the best way to prevent swarms is to actually take brood frames out (which you can use to start a nuc with a new queen) and not to add more honey supers. My bees are still struggling to fill their brood frames, so I haven't had to worry about it all.

By the way, do you keep an epi pen on hand? I just had a TERRIBLE sting on my elbow that caused me to feel pretty sick - most likely because of all the swelling and not really a systemic allergic reaction. But it got me thinking about a REAL reaction. I asked some beekeepers around here and most of the old timers don't have one, but new folks, especially those with kids, generally have them just in case. I'll mention it to my doctor the next time I go and see what he thinks.

I don't have an epi pen, but I'd like to get one. I just don't go to the doctor very often, so I haven't had the opportunity to get a prescription. I will, but just haven't yet.

Do you do deep brood and shallow supers? I do all mediums and no excluder, so if they are crowded they can just move on up. Still learning, but even the guys who have been doing it for twenty years + are still learning.

By the way, do you use Fischer's Bee Quick?

I don't get to the doctor very often either. I just called him to schedule an appointment. He's been retired for 2 years! Doh! Guess I gotta find a new one.

Yep, I have deep brood boxes - the 9 5/8" ones. The supers I have are Illinois medium - 6 5/8" and then I have some shallow comb honey supers. I thought about doing all medium, but by the time I heard of that, I had already made 4 deep brood boxes, so I just stuck with what I have!

By the way, do you use Fischer's Bee Quick?

Hadn't heard of it 'til just now. I just use smoke and a brush and move the frames away from the hive in a new box. I keep meaning to get a bee escape for the cover, but the vast majority of the bees leave so that I haven't really bothered.

I haven't used it either, but I am friends with the guy who invented it, Jim Fischer. He also writes an article in Bee Culture magazine. Interesting character.

June Update

Ok, it's the last day of June. How did I do? I lost 5.9 lbs. Not bad - but my calorie deficit says I should have lost 9.9 (10 was my goal!). So I need to work on keeping track of calories better. Either that, or I'm up for some big losses to come for things to even out.

And let's review my goals for the month.

Exercise: Burn 2800 calories a day. Vary my workouts (working at home, going to the gym, Krav, etc). I would like to do a structured class 3 times a week (Krav, cycling)

I did not end up going to classes even ONCE the whole month! I've been crazy busy and burning lots of calories around the house so I just never really made it. I burned an average of 2849 calories a day this month, so that wasn't bad.

Diet: I'm doing pretty good on calories so stick with 1800. Less fat and more protein though. I can tell when I've had a good amount of protein. I'm more energetic. I'm shooting for 90 grams of protein and 30 grams of fat

Based on my food log, I ate 1588 calories and based on actual measurement changes, I ate 2112 calories.

I ate an average of 52 grams of protein a day - or 15% of my calories (goal was 20%). I ate an average of 43 grams of fat a day - or 29% (goal was 15%).

6 pounds for the month is good. For me, I've found that if I do the same thing every day I slow down on weight loss. If I change it up each day then it recharges. If you are getting the bulk of your exercise from doing chores, even though it's physically chalenging and draining, you are probably not getting the same overall affect as if you did a 30-60 min cardio. Something to think about.

Plan for July

Goal (set June 20): 180 lbs by Aug 2nd.

Diet:
  • 1600 calories a day

  • Only drink alcohol one night a week

Exercise:

  • exercise class once a week
  • walk 4 miles 5 days a week

This calorie deficit (1250) will only get me to 184 by Aug 2nd.

Yep. I'm really REALLY trying to add in some actual cardio classes to my schedule. I used to be really good about going, but things have been really busy around the house. I set myself with the goal of going to one structured cardio class a week for July. That's not much, but I want it to be a goal that I can make. I'm also going to start jogging pretty soon. I'm working my way up to it!
