The big oak (Quercus) needs to drop some dead limbs!

I am back to counting calories today. .4 pounds a week isn't going to cut it.

I kept myself very busy this past weekend. I got my fruits/veggies/water/exercise in.

I'm back in the field today, but I've already had my fruits for the day and I'll have my veggies tonight. I grilled veggies and chicken last night.

Good planning, Q! With all this added muscle, you'll be burning calories... now keep the motor fed well and stay hydrated and watch the weight come off.

Good luck on the calorie counting front. It isn't really that hard, particularly when you do some rounding. I don't think I've ever bothered to count numbers any more precise than by fives (IE, 85 calories or 90 calories, but never 87 calories).

Thanks everybody!

MrVee, I believe you have a smartphone now so you should get My Fitness Pal. It has a catalog of foods so you can find out calories. It has some rudimentary graphs and metrics inputs. You can scan a barcode and adjust servings from packaged foods. It's nice and free!

I've only got 550 calories left for dinner. I'll make it modest, but with 10 hours in the field I will still be at a big deficit after dinner.

I went nearly 500 over. That's bad, but I burned way more extra calories than that. I also ate better and less than I have been. I'll keep tracking and try to ease the calories down while I'm in the field. I'll be strict on the calories once I'm back to the office for a bit.

Hey, have been thinking of you today. It is pouring down here - hope you escaped the rain - not the best when you are working in the field.
500 over is ok btw - if you burn extra 1000!! don't sweat it - no pun intended :p

Don't let the extra calories bother you right now. I'd say you're getting enough exercise in the field to make up for it. It's hard to maintain a strict caloric intake when there's something upsetting your routine.

my fitnesspal is awesome if you have a smart phone! , i love it.
and agreed with Cory your probably burning enough calories for it to all balance out so dont worry too much about the extras!

Well I finished my portion of the pipeline, but it remains to be seen if they will make me do part of their remaining section. I missed the rain today, but it started up after we got back to the office. We had a couple inches over the weekend and we had to wear chest waders to access a short section today. It was a really tough day, but hopefully it will be the last day of field work for this project.

My picture for the end of the last contest was taken on March 16th in a shirt that did not fit at all. It now fits fine 2 weeks later. That's nice!

Finally an office day. I don't know when I've been more exhausted. It's like my body was blocking out the fatigue and aches to a large degree and the second I had the thought that the field work was over it came rushing in. I got fire ants on my hands yesterday so even my fingers hurt. My eyes burn and I want to go to sleep. I believe I've gone past tolerance and I am now immune to caffeine.

I'm just whining as it's hopefully over and I can rest and get back to my life. I'll stick to my calories today as this is the establishment of my return to a normal pattern.

My weight was at 327 this morning, but this time last week it was 328 and I ended up at 324 on Saturday. My hope is that the rest and calorie restrictions will really get the scale moving. I'm wearing a button up 2xl that I bought as a goal shirt as I could just get the buttons done when purchased. Now it fits very well with room to spare. I'm definitely losing fat, but at some point the weight has to move.

I'm going to make this half of the week happen. 319 is my Saturday prediction. I'll be happy with any loss, but surely I'm due for a big drop.

Hey Quercus, what's your waist to height ratio these days? Sounds like it should be getting pretty close to 0.5.

Hope some rest does you good.

.68 51" to 75" @ 324.0 lbs

What is the predicted BF%? I tried to look at the article you posted but it didn't make sense to me. It may have just been that I was too tired to think straight.

^That gave me 26.7% BF.

Hey you, happy office day!!
I bet you enjoy it! :) So you are predicting 319 for the weekend - that's so cool!
I haven't had a big drop for a long time...in fact I m virtually the same since end of Jan...(up2, down 3, up 4 down 3...etc)
I hope you can get a good number!! You really have been working hard for it!

Unfortunately that site appears to badly underestimate bodyfat% as it has me at 22.9% (I wish). The two formulas from the article I posted would come up with 37.8% for you without using the waist measurement, 36.0% with the waist. For me it was (37.4% and 33.6% respectively).

I have a hell of a time measuring my waist though. I can't seem to figure out the right way to get a consistent number. It varies from between 44 and 46 inches right now. I can post a spreadsheet with the formulas if you like.

I mentioned the waist to height ratio because I had seen a few pages earlier you talking about wearing a size 38 pant and I think I misunderstood.

Mine varied by a couple inches and as I kept repeating the measurements I got it down to an inch of variation. The Navy specs say measure three times and take the lowest I believe.

I do have a couple of size 38 pants that I can wear, but I don't wear them just above the belly button which is 51". I wear my pants at the narrowest part of my waist and measure at the widest. For my size 42 pants that I only wear for field and yard work I now have to wear them near my belly button which creates a lovely flour sack/high water combo that's all the rage in swamp work.

Thanks for the bf calc. I'd be happy to have the spreadsheet. I figured out that I was using cm for height when it wanted meters. Don't math exhausted.

I should clarify. When I said Navy spec I was referring to the Navy's method of using a belly to neck ratio to estimated body fat. It is supposed to account for large muscle mass more effectively. I'll do that calc this evening and see how it matches up to the two study methods.

One of the listed coefficients in that paper was also wrong, surprisingly enough. The intercept needed a negative sign in front of it. I checked this by entering in the sample average for each statistic and with the negative sign the prediction lines up perfectly with the actual average body fat numbers (as should happen in a regression). I'd send them a note to this effect, but the paper is seven years old now, so...

I'll post the spreadsheet tomorrow.

It likely has an errata already or never will, but nice job reverse engineering their equation.

35% on the Naval BCA estimation

I think 35-36% is reasonable to assume. That means I have around 10% BF to lose to be out of obese range (>25%).
