The big oak (Quercus) needs to drop some dead limbs!

Using the Navy calculation I've lost 8% BF from 43% to 35%. Since I've lost 7.2% of my body weight that hopefully means I've lost mostly fat and possible gained muscle which the lack of scale movement would suggest. That makes me happy!

unless there is a specific need for accuracy, the method used for determining BF% in not that important so long as you can see a trend downwards.

Absolutely Coach! I'm pleased with the drop I've had regardless of the real number. I'd like something in the ballpark as that will help me determine a long term goal and that's as far as my concern with accuracy goes. I think using Mr.Vee's spreadsheet and the Naval calculations will give me three readings and assuming they all track consistently I choose to assume that the average is accurate enough for my purposes.

323.6 this morning.

Here's the spreadsheet Quercus. For the ladies out there, this only works for the men. They have different formulas for the women. If anyone is interested, I could create one for you guys too.

Thank you sir! FYI I discovered that if I suck in as hard as I can and measure and then push my gut out as far as I can and measure that the average the two measurements I get the same measure as when I do my normal relaxed measurement. 51" on the nose so I assume that means I'm doing it okay. You could try that to see if your average measurements match.

Nice job on the drop, Q! Hey my brain is to full to take on anything new, but maybe later you can help me figure outs all these calculations you two are making?

Edit: I just saw this and thought of you and your field work food....

That's awesome! My kitchen is never without Sri Racha and Sambal Oelek. Usually a dozen other hotsauces as well.
Cholula
El Yuceteca green, red, and yellow
Tabasco
Frank's Red Hot
Buffalo
Valentina
El Pato

That's just some of the bottled stuff I can think of that I currently have. That doesn't count salsas, wasabi, pickled dried frozen and fresh peppers. I'm obsessed with hot food.

As far as the formulas go. Mr.Vee has his spreadsheet all set up to just plug in the measurements. Belly is measured at the widest part at to one inch above the navel and the neck measurement is taken just below the adam's apple. There is a link to the Naval measurements above in a previous post of mine.

I didn't weigh this morning, but it is day one of no sodas.

Starting tomorrow it will be black coffee, unsweet tea, and water for my mini challenge points so the timing of giving up soda is perfect. Luckily I won't have to contend with no alcohol for the challenge since it been over three months since I gave that up.

Kicking soda should give me a real advantage at reducing my over dependence on caffeine. Especially the vats of poison that are the sugar free energy drinks which have become a daily thing during this project. I worked up to drinking a 24 oz. sugar free energy drink every field day and some days I had 2. That's on top of the coffee and diet sodas. I drank lots of water, but all the diuretic effects of the caffeine made me need more fluids than would have otherwise been necessary.

1,300 calories and an hour on the spin bike. I've drank more than a gallon of water and eaten a ton of fruit and vegetables.

If the scale doesn't cooperate in the morning I'm going to shoot it...with a 44 Magnum...6 times.

Oh I hope that scale survives :) good luck on the no soda - If you love soda can't you just switched over to diet soda? I love Coke zero, I hate normal Coke - way to sweet for me. But the taste of Coke Zero and Diet Pepsi - yummmm!!!

So the scale lives to weigh another day.

321.0 That's -28.2 pounds and -8%. I'm ready to be in the 3teens, but I'll make it soon enough. Mands I only drank diet soda. I'm kicking it. Day one was no problem on the soda. I started my no artificial sweetners/calories drank yesterday a day before the mini challenge. I don't mind black coffee, but I've gotten a habit of drinking flavored coffees with artificial sweeteners. That and diet sodas are what I'll have to stay away from this week.

Good work Quercus. Glad to see you don't have to pick up tiny little scale bits from around the house.

How is staying away from soda going? I hope it's good!
With your dedication you soon be in the 3teens.

I hope you are enjoying a sunny weekend!

Today has been great so far. I've rigged up my computer so I'm typing this while riding the bike. it's tough to do easier just to read. I'm doing an hour on the bike. No calories or soda drank. I don't miss it too bad so far.

Aw crap! I finished my hour on the bike and went to do my 20 situps. I managed 3. I won't likely get any points for situps, but I definitely have to work on this. My core strength is abysmal. No wonder I have back pain. Please call me out if I don't mention my situps. I've asked you nicely and it will be doing me a favor. Yes you!

Have you considered doing those leg lift type crunches I'm doing? They can be tough, depending on how you do them, but they definitely work the lower abs. Also my core muscles have been getting MUCH stronger since doing the Biggest Loser Yoga DVDs.

I'm doing marine crunches which I assume are pretty tough. I like to do yoga on days when I can't face the bike, but I haven't done it in a long time. I can try your crunches after I do the max marine crunches and see if I can make it to 20 and get some points.

Quercus, pls tell me why are you giving up diet sodas?? Is there a specific reason? I'm interested as I drink a lot of diet soda and maybe I missed it in your diary.

Mands, diet sodas have no nutritional value, but the idea is that you reduce your calories when substituting them for regular sodas. You reduce the calories that way but there are drawbacks.

1.The chemicals in diet sodas have effects on your body. Some studies link artificial sweetners with the same increase in appetite that consuming sugar has. See 2nd link.

2.Common sense says that if you drink/eat lots of sweets (artificial or real) you maintain or increase your appetite for sweets (artificial or real).

3.The ingredients of diet soda have potentially toxic ingredients (including the sweetners). See the 1st link for a good synopsis of potential toxic effects of artificial sweetners. Preservatives and colorings can also be nasty. Citrus flavored sodas and Mountain Dew have brominated vegetable oil in them to give them the cloudy look. That crap is associated with all types of nastiness (See 3rd link).

4. Justina sent me some info that showed sodium benzoate can have asthmogenic effects and that's a main ingredient in most diet sodas. Other ingredients of sodas can have asthmogenic effects. In other words I have asthma and diet soda could aggravate the symptoms.

5. Habitual consumption of sodas has lead to other health effects like osteoporosis. Calcium is leeched from the body to increase the pH when low pH soda is consumed.

Short version: It's not good for me, there is no benefit if I don't drink regular soda instead, and it should decrease my appetites for sweets while increasing my water consumption.
