Swimming and HIIT

Hey guys...

I've been visiting this forum for some time now and it has helped me achive very good results in the past 2 1/2 months... I lost nearly 20 pounds of fat, and reached my goal weight which is 192lbs at 6''3'. I still have a some fat, especially on my belly, love handles and butt, but i think i'm in a good way to get rid of that by the end of the summer. So, i'm concetrating more on weight lifting to build some muscle mass right now, and still want to continue doing cardio to slowly lose that remaining fat...
The summer is coming and I'm goind at the sea where simply the place for running does not exist... Since I'll won't have much time either, i tought doing HIIT 4-5 times a week.
Is Swimming a good HIIT workout? To do sprints (or whatever u call them) for like 50m, increase my pulse above 165 (I get exhausted much much faster swimming than running), then rest while swimming easily till i catch mu breath and repeat the sprint... Is this a good idea in your opinion?

cheers!

lol i wish it was true; when i swim in my pool the only reason i feel i can go no longer is because i run out of breath (holding it and trying to get breaths in between). I feel sprinting all out is just a metabolism shocker. i know i couldnt sprint for a minute strait. no way.

What size pool is it?

50m pools are a a touch short of suicide :D

Swimming is how I do all my cardio, LISS, fasted and HIIT.

For HIIT, I just aply the same basics as for any other form of cardio. The pool I swim at is 25m, so I'll do one length @ 100% effort freestyle, then swim back using breaststroke. I tend to find that by the time I get back from the first sprint I am pretty ****ed up, and if you can do a full 20 minutes like this, 100% effort on all your sprints, you must have lungs of a bison!!

The only other thing from experience - no-one cares if you spew on the road or in a field whilst running; trust me, everyone cares if you spew in the pool ;)

For the ultimate challenge, do your last two sprints Butterfly. I think the Marines over there have a saying - welcome to the suck :p

1min sprints wouldn't end up bieng HIT nayway cos your pace would be 30% slower than your top speed by then if not more...your better off just sprinting for as long as you can hold top speed

are you saying that 1min sprints are a bad idea??? i dont understand:confused:

ya, fly i agree; that hiit swimming routine would be killer.

when i swim in a 25m community pool, i try to do 5 laps(back and forth 5 times at full intensity) and im ready to die when im done.
