Sushi's Weightloss Diary

Hello everyone and goodbye to my old body. I'm Ryan... I'm 24 and 5'10". I'm a 1/2 Japanese and American guy who moved here(San Jose, CA) from Japan earlier this year in pursuit of a better job. I got the better job, but I also found the amazing foods that the US has to offer and spent too much time discovering my way from an already heavy weight into a 255 pound body.
I haven't always been this heavy. At the start of college, I was around 170 pounds and feeling great. As time flew by and responsibilities added up, I found more time to do anything unhealthy than time to make a change. OR! I just got lazy...
but I am done making excuses and wasting time.
My target weight is 190 pounds. I hope to lose about 10 pounds a month in order to get there.
I've started biking to work(14 miles roundtrip) and dieting(2200 calories/day)...
Right now, motivation is good, but it's so easy to lose... so I have to just do it! Well... I'm off to bike to work! Good luck everyone else! I hope I can post results soon!

Ryan

Hi and welcome!

When I visited Japan I thought that if I could live there I would be thin, all the food was so healthy and beautifully prepared. So I can certainly understand how changing to a SAD (Standard American Diet) could butter on the pounds.

Fortunately we have a lot of choices here so you can bypass the deep fried pork rinds (before they 'bypass' you) and eat healthier. I think you are in a good part of the country (CA) for healthy eating.

Best of luck on your journey!

HI Ryan! Welcome to WLF! I have no doubt you came to the right place for support! This place is awesome and if you travel around some other diary's you will see what I mean. Oh I have to put a little note on the half Japanese/half white. That is a gorgeous combo in my book, way back in my high school days I dated a guy for 5 years who was that exact mix, he was hotter than all get out!! his dad was white and mom is Japanese, she is a doll face and his dad was real tall about 6'2". I just want to say, that is a great combo in my book. He had the best of both worlds and his folks and I are still good friends to this day. I wish you the best of success! And stay with it, your worth every drop of sweat!!

Kim and David, thanks for the warm welcome! I agree, these forums are great for support and advice. Hopefully I can help others soon.

While I was in Japan, I still think that I had the SAD, but the food was a little less accessible so I was already pretty heavy, but I wasn't gaining or losing. Shortly after I arrived here, Chili's happened, Roundtable Pizza happened... I think I just got too excited to try new foods and now I suffer the consequences... haha. If only french fries tasted like dirt.....

Again, thanks for the welcome!

EDIT:(almost forgot!)
Biked 7 miles to work
Biked 7 miles home
Resistance Training - Upper Body

Messed up on the eating today... 1100 Calories. I'm not hungry though... hmm...

Great job on getting in that exercise. And I'm soooooo jealous you have Round Table pizza, OH MY WORD!! People in Oklahoma have no idea what good pizza really is. We only have ONE place in this whole state that has decent pizza and well, it still doesn't compare to Round Table, ahhhh I grew up on that stuff. :D Keep up the good work and keep on biking!!

I can't believe I have such bad luck...
So today was going great. I was eating healthy, I biked to work, biked home... I decided to buy a home cycling trainer so I could get some exercise on rainy days and such. Turns out that my bike won't fit it without a little modification... then! when putting my bike away, I learned that I have misaligned the rear disc brake. !!!Insert angry words here!!! I can't fix it in time for work tomorrow so I'm out for one day... hopefully no more than that.
Besides these tiny problems, motivation has been great. I've noticed a change in weight, but I won't post results until the end of the week. People at work have also made a lot of comments about my new plans... some negative, but that can be expected at a video games publisher.

Biked the 14 miles.
1400 Calories of healthy foods... I would really love a coffee right now, but I must sleep.

Hey there Ryan,

welcome to the WLF. :D Fantastic job with getting in exercise. Food wise, maybe you're not so hungry because you're just starting out with watching your food. (Psychological matter... start eating healthy to lose weight, so your mind automatically talks yourself into being full quicker... regardless, you already know you have to get in your minimum requirement of calories per day...) Anyways, wishing you luck with your weight loss journey and I'll definitely be dropping in on you.

PS I saw your Favorite Bands List...
and yes... I'm a TOOL kind of broad myself.
Good stuff. ;)

Morning Ryan, Don't even worry about the comments others are giving you on your weight loss. Just blow that crap off now!! People will start to get jealous, because let's face it, everyone would like to lose a pound here and there, nobody is absolutely happy with their bodies, so you will get that kind of feed back through out your trial. I think your on the right track, even with a bike malfunction, I still sense a positive attitude and that's where it ALL starts!! Don't give up the attitude, keep it strong and YOU WILL succeed, I promise!! good luck today!

I guess I am a lot more motivated than I had thought... I wouldn't let my bike rest today!!! That's right... I fixed it and rode all the way to work with a huge smile(In between the heavy breathing and tired face)!
At lunch, I had a Chicken sandwich wrapped in a Spinach tortilla. I'm not sure how healthy it is, but I'm guessing it's less than 400 calories. I was really full after.
Besides the health and financial benefits of riding to work... I'm also really enjoying the scenery. I might sound like a total geek for this, but on my way to work, I pass a Yahoo! building, NORTEL building, and many other tech companies. I absolutely love it! I feel like I've worked really hard to get here, and riding by those buildings to my job reminds me of why I came out here. Can't wait to see it all again tomorrow... it'd be nice if the bike vs. car traffic wasn't as scary.

Thanks Kim. I've discovered that working toward getting healthy is a big part of my positive attitude. I'm feeling so much better everyday.

Thanks for stopping by Sheryl. Hopefully I don't struggle too much with getting in the required calories. Should I eat even when I don't have much of an appetite?

Diary Part:
I didn't ride my bike today. I woke up and my legs were pretty sore... I might have been a little dehydrated, but I'll be back at it tomorrow.
I feel like I've cheated myself on food today as well. I ate at Taco Bell with my coworkers, but it's the end of the day and I've only taken in 1800 calories. Not all healthy foods, but still within my limits.

I'm trying to learn a little more about how metabolism works as I figure that my method of dieting requires me to eat small meals at certain intervals. I believe I'm building a faster metabolism, but it could be just excitement... haha. I've also lost a good amount of weight and now have a noticeably slimmer face. I will weigh myself in the morning and post the resulting weight loss.

I'm really grateful for the comments and support that I'm getting on this forum. It's nice to find so many people working toward the same goal.

Hi again,

Based on my reading, the idea that more frequent, smaller meals will boost your metabolism is based on the idea that the digestion of food is a calorie intensive process and if you can keep it running constantly you will burn more calories.

I dunno if the idea has any merit. Steve (one of the Fitness Professionals who frequent the forum) in a recent post said there's little evidence to back up this idea.

Certainly the smaller, frequent meals help in keeping blood sugar levels more constant and this helps avoid cravings/sugar binges/crashes that can derail your eating. It also eases hunger so you are less likely to overeat at your next feeding.

So it's all good!

As for your co-workers giving you a hard time, when somebody takes steps to make an improvement in their health, this is often met with skepticism and even ridicule by others. One of the reasons is that it points out to those people that improving ones self is possible. This makes them self-conscious "why then, am I not trying to improve myself too?" they wonder. But they are not ready to make the effort to embrace health. So to deal with you and their own lack of motivation they belittle your effort.

Do not let it get to you. Keep going and you may in time be a good example for them and they may become inspired. Fail and you will further reinforce the idea that change for the better is difficult or impossible.

248! Awesome... There were mornings where I weighed-in at 245, but 248 is just fine for me. Hopefully it wasn't too unhealthy to drop that much weight in a week.

Thanks for the info David. I guess if anything, eating small meals throughout the day is keeping me from overeating.
As for the negative people at work, some have actually come to me for advice. I still feel it's quite early to give good advice, but it's nice to see that my coworkers are looking to improve their health as well.

great job!! And your right SMALL Meals several times a day, is PERFECT!! it really does work, I know that's what I do also! Have a wonderful weekend!:rotflmao:

Ganbarima~su!

I probably won't be back till Monday. I may try to find some hills to ride the bike on... have a good weekend everyone! And for those of you who weigh in on Mondays, I send extra good vibes your way! ;)

I'm back! The weekend was pretty good... didn't get much exercise in, but I'm still maintaining my weight.
I don't have much time though... I woke up a little late. Gonna go bike!

More weight loss this morning... I'm convinced that my bike is a fat burning machine!!!
Yesterday I decided that I'd ride my bike during lunch down a path close to work. It was nice to get in a little bit more exercise at a time when I would usually be eating more than I need to. Unfortunately, I had a pretty bad headache at the end of the day and my girlfriend picked me and my bike up.
I believe(totally guessing) that my headache came from a caffeine withdrawal. I don't think I've had caffeine in days! It's kinda nice...
I've been looking around the forums a lot. I really like the before and after pics of everyone. Really inspiring! I'd like to post my own, but I think I am still a little self-conscious. Maybe at a 15 or 20 lbs. loss...
