Susan's Diary

Hi All,

I posted in the new members section but thought I'd post here too and get my diary started.

My name is Susan and I'm new here. I've been struggling with an extra 40-50 lbs for about 3 years.

I'm 43 years old, 5'1" tall and I weigh 180 lbs. I quickly gained the extra weight after I quit smoking 4 years ago. 180 lbs might not seem like a lot to some of you but on my short 5'1" body I'm uncomfortably overweight! I wear size 16 pants and a 1x or 2x shirt.

I'd like to get down to 140 lbs. After that I'll decide if I want to go further but for now I'll be thrilled to reach this goal. My program is to count calories... 1600 cal/day till I see where that takes me. There are also a few modifications to my diet... like making sure I eat breakfast and only eating 400-500 calorie dinners.

One of my biggest problems is beer. I normally drink 3 or so beers during the week which is no big deal. But, on Fridays I can easily drink a 6-7 beers... it's been my way to unwind and relax after a long week. I am able to unwind but normally feel lousy the next day and I lounge around watching the tube and eating all day to replenish whatever I lost from drinking so much the night before. Between the beer and extra food I'm packing in the calories. I really need to find another way to unwind... maybe yoga? any thoughts??

Anyhow, that's my story. This looks like an awesome site and I look forward to getting to know you all!

In your welcome thread I mentioned that I am in Alaska also, I'm in Dutch Harbor, where are you at? It's nice to see some representation from our vast yet "small" state...lol. Great start to your journal by the way and I look forward to hearing more about your success'.

Hi Susan :D
Welcome to the WLF and to your diary!

It sounds like you have a healthy, attainable goal and this is a great spot for inspiration and motivation!

People here might not know this...but I kinda like to drink some of my calories too ;) I've found that simply cutting back the frequency has helped a great deal - I also don't recommend power walking if you've been drinking and whatever you do, DON'T post here while, um, tipsy! ;)

That being said, I generally only have a couple of drinks at wine club (once a month), book club (once a month), mom's night out (once a month) - OK, this is sounding bad...so now I might (generally) only have one drink on those nights.

Water is my friend!

Again, welcome to your diary and good luck in this journey!

Thanks everyone!

Iwan naloseit... I live in Anchorage. Do you ever come here? Maybe we can get together sometime when you're passing through.

Drinking is my Achilles heal as well. I’m fine during the week, but come Fri night, I loose all control. It’s my biggest obstacle to overcome.

So, Welcome from a fellow beer lover.

hahaha! I saw your diary entry about last weekend and was going to comment but got distracted and busy till now.

I totally know what where you're coming from. I am going to try some other things to help me to unwind. I've heard yoga is great. I've never tried it but it's worth a try!

I really hesitated posting about the beer because I dodn't want people to think I'm a lush... lol. But, on the other hand I thought if I'm ever going to nip this weight problem I have to be honest with myself and deal with the issues whatever they are.

Good to meet you!

Susan

Yeah, I thought abut that too, but then I figured, you guys know I’m an Aussi, so you already think I’m drunk half the time.:D

We can help motivate each other not to imbibe on the weekends. Fridays my worst day.

Hey when did drinking beer become bad for you? I don't drink much except on those few days that it's a treat. Now whiskey, thats a whole other animal lol. I will normally just have one glass to unwind though the whole bottle of whiskey fits in my glass lol...... welcome to the forum.

I'll take an occational glass of wine or a nice beer but very rarley these days since I'm pretty much either working or at home practicing for my hermit badge.
Susan, I do go through Anchorage quite often actually, this summer I was through 6 times in three months. And yes, I would love to meet you sometime! maybe you can introduce me to a few hiking trails in the area since when I'm in town I'm usually stagnating in a meeting and then in a hotel room.

I’ve noticed myself how a bottle of wine only has two glasses in it now. DH says it’s the glasses that have gotten bigger, but I think the bottles have gotten smaller. ;)

Welocme to the forum!!!!!!

See you are not alone when it comes to drinking beer. I am also a beer drinker, Wine, liquior you name it :D I don't drink all hte time cause I hardly have any money to but it. But if I did you bet I would have at least one beer a night. It does relax me.

Well, You have a GREAT Plan. Stay Positive and you'll get t o your Goal. Have a GREAT Day and drink your WATER!!!!!!

WOW... this board is busy! I only have a little time during the week where I can sit at the computer so I think I'll stick to the diary section for now... hope you all understand.

Thanks for all your replies.

Hillbillylee... beer only became a problem when I decided I wanted to lose weight... lol! Between my Friday night 6 pack and my Saturday morning munchies the calories pile up. The six pack itself and laying around till noon on Saturday never bothered me... kinda relaxing really! So, I looked at switching to wine and other types of booze and it doesn't seem to matter what it is... there are tons of calories in all of it. Bugger...

Jellybelly88... good to meet another beer drinker!!

Ohappydaye... thanks for the welcome.

Iwan... please do get ahold of me next time you're in Anchorage. You can send me a private message when you know you're coming and we can exchange contact information. I know there are hiking trails all around Anchorage... if nothing else we can take a stroll on the costal trail!

Susan

I am going to weigh myself every Friday morning and I'm happy to say that yesterday I was two pounds down!

This week I've been eating about 400 calories for breakfast, 600-700 for lunch (which is a HUGE lunch... sometimes can't eat it all and take a snack between lunch and dinner), and 500 for dinner. I'm trying not to go over 1600 calories per day.

On Tuesday I realized it DOES matter where the calories come from. I decided to eat a 500 calorie piece of carrot cake for breakfast... bad, bad, bad. I was soooooo famished by lunch. Now I know where the term "empty calories" comes from. I do very well if I eat oatmeal or cheerios with a banana or something like that.

Everything else went good this week. I don't feel hungry at all (except Tuesday) and was thrilled to see the loss yesterday morning.

That's about it for now. I'm off to read other people's diary's now. I hope everyne else is doing well on their weight loss journey!

Susan

Hi Susan, I will for sure give you a hollah the next time I plan to come it, it may be winter by then though, I hope you like walking in the cold, lol! Great job so far, two pounds in nothing to shake your fist at! We had our first termination dust of the season this morning, it made me a little sad to see summer go so fast this year. Seems like there was maybe two good weeks of weather this summer, I now you probably feel the same every time I came to town this summer it was raining and everybody was grumbling. Did you make it out to the state fair last month? I did and it was actually beautiful the few hours I was there.
Have a good weekend!
