Summer Weight Loss Odyssey!!!

Hi I'm new to the forum. Just posted my first ever forum post in the newcomers section. Hoping that using the site will help me achieve my goals.

I have started way too many times and failed to reach my goals. I'm hoping this time it will be different as I am planning a much more sensible approach.

I am a guy. Currently weigh 201lbs and my goal for the end of September is to be 168lbs.

My plan is to take in approx 1200-1400 calories a day and get in at least 1hr cardio exercise 6 days a week for the first month. After month one I plan to introduce some weights work.

It would be great if there were any guys or girls who would like to join me on my summer weight loss odyssey. If you would like to do so please let me know and we can get it done together!

Looking forward to a new weight loss and posting experience.

Hey there dayoneguy! Everyone of us has been in your shoes. By that I mean we've all made our first posts here and started a diary AND started our weight loss goals and fumbled a bit. I know I have many times, but this forum helps to keep me on track even because it holds me accountable.

Right now I'm just maintaining my weight until after my wedding and honeymoon (June, 9th) but after that I plan on kicking it back into gear and trying to lose my last 10lbs to get myself to 145lbs. Maintaining is no easy feat. I've gained a few lbs back here and there, but always monitor my weight and when I have an influx, I make sure I lose it. I'm trying to stay between 150 and 155lbs. Right now I'm right at 155lbs.

I'm not sure, but it looks as if you're calorie goals may be a bit too low for you since you are male. Hopefully some other members can back me up here, but I thought men should eat no fewer than 1500 cals. Please check into that as we don't want your body going into starvation mode and holding on to every ouce of fat.

Looking forward to following your journey! :)

Thanks TrusIver and Munch.

Congrats on your wedding Munch and thanks for your advice on my calorie intake. I think you are right. I just want to get the first 14lbs off with a low calorie diet and will up my intake after the first month. If others think that this does not fall into my sensible approach plan, I would love to hear some feedback.

A little update :

This is Day 3.

I managed to get my first cardio workout in on day one(I'm great at first day starts as I have said!!!). Got distracted with work yesterday and didnt get out for my planned run. However I did stick to my diet plan which I am happy about.

I have been bad at not having breakfast in the morning so have been making an effort to have some cereal in the morning. I have also been bad at not taking on enough fluids so am making an extra effort to drink plenty of water(have a bottle of water on my desk throughout the day which seems to help).

When I have dieted before I have spent too much time jumping on the scales every morning hoping that there will be some sort of miracle and the job will be done over night!! My plan this time is to jump on the scales once a week(on a Monday) and then track my weight on here - good news or bad!

Thanks for the encouragement guys.

AWell done sticking to your diet plan and a big thumbs up for the cardio :)

without some idea of your bodyfat % it is hard to tell of your calories are to low and you don't say anything about your numbers for protein, carbs and fat.

I think we've all wished that at some point. I'm still hoping..haha! :D

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your weight loss!

Thanks TrusyIver.

I checked my body fat on day 1 of my plan(I am using a scales at Boots(uk pharmacy) which provides an accurate weigh in and measures body fat. My Body Fat % is 36.7% and body fat mass is 33.5 kg. My height is 5'9.2"(1.76m). Depressing reading but that's my reality!!

If you have any advice it would be very appreciated.

Jen

Thanks so much for the encouragement and welcome. lol nothing wrong with hoping I suppose!! Off to check out your threads now.

Off for my first run in about 6 months tonight!!

AI am just going to work through a few calculations

201 lb = 91 kg (roughly)
36.7% of 91 kg = 33.4 kg
91-33.4 = 57.6 kg of metabolically active lean body mass

looking up a chart in one of my books that comes to around 6675 kilojoules = 1589 calories needed to maintain muscle mass assuming your between the ages 18-30

of course the numbers are always estimates and need to be tweaked for individuals.

For protein needs while not weight training you could get away with 57.6 grams of protein per day, when adding in the weights then your looking at around 92 grams per day.

92 grams of protein = 368 calories

Thanks for the advice TrusyIver.

Well after yesterdays disaster it seems I might need those extra calories!!!

Had some friends over for dinner. I did really well with the meal but couldnt resist a glass of wine which turned into three and a couple of pints of beer in the pub afterwards. Pretty gutted as it was more bowing to social convention than a will power thing.

However what I would normally do as I sit here feeling the effects of the night before would be to reach for biscuits and plan to start again next week. Instead have decided to post on here and just get on with my plan. So not another day 1- just getting back to it after a blip.

I did get a run in the night before last. Managed 15 mins. There is a park which is exactly 15 mins from my house. Plan to use the entrance as my finish line for the next week and then add 5 mins more running each week until I can run for 40 mins. I like enjoying the walk back to the house knowing that I put in a good effort on the run. Strange writing this as it is pretty depressing that 15 mins is all I can do at the moment. Only ten years since I played a lot of sport in college and school.

My big mission is to survive tonight. Heading to my parents house as they are hosting a bit of a get together which will involve lots of food and drink. Going to do my best not to make the mistakes of last night.

Hope anyone reading this is doing better with their efforts.

Agood effort treating it as just a blip, it is always best to get back on track ASAP

We've all had blips, no worries there. The main thing is that you get back on track right after the blip, otherwise you get lax and start thinking that you might as well just restart on Monday. That's always the worst idea because then you let yourself go for a few days instead of just getting the one out of your system and starting right the next day.

Good job

AI won't post the picture, as it has a very scantily clad woman in it..haha! But I have a motivational picture that I found online that says ....

Saying "Oh, I've already ruined my good eating today. I'll just eat like crap" is like saying "Oh, I dropped my phone on the floor. I'll just smash it til it breaks".

I don't know why, but I love that little saying. We all make mistakes. Great job getting right back on it! :)

Well sorry for not posting sooner. Have had an interesting week and a half.

Only lost two pounds in week 1. At least it was something. Weighed myself today and I am the same!!! On the bright side I am now 199lbs so out of the 200s!

To be honest I have been a bit lacking in motivation. Mainly because work is taking up most of my focus. I have been doing a lot of driving and staying in hotels over the last couple of weeks. As a result I am finding it difficult to plan my meals.

So have decided to make a real commitment and met with a personal trainer yesterday. Have my first session today and am worried that I will embarrass myself! He is a pretty cool guy though so hope he can help me give myself a real kick up the....

Will let you know how I get on tomorrow.

AI can understand how hard it is to eat well while traveling, good luck with the trainer :)

So had my first session with my new Trainer. Ouch!!!

Brilliant session but it was like a scene out of the biggest loser!!!! I was bent over panting and seriously questioning what I had let myself in for! But that's exactly what I wanted. Someone to take me through my paces and show me how unfit I really am. I felt very sick near the end and had to ask to take a break but managed to push on through and loved the closing session with the boxing gloves.

The trainer is brilliant - not one of these shouting types. He recognised that I was not in good shape and pushed me far enough without completely killing me! I really think this could be the way forward for me. I have always started diets in the past without including much exercise, telling myself that I would exercise when I get the weight down by about 14 lbs. Time to mix it up and accept that there's no gain(loss) without pain!! cheesy but true!

It was a workout which was different to anything I had tried before. It included boxercise(which I loved), kettle balls & own weight exercises). He gave me a protein shake at the end to help muscle repair - there's something about those fitness shake bottles that make you feel like an actual gym rat!

My trainer took all my measurements and did that thing where they pinch you with a device to work out fat %. Bit embarrassing but had to be done. Turns out my fat % is 38% :( so a little higher than the scales I used a couple of weeks ago. I have set a goal of having a body fat % of 28% by the end of August.

The trainer has given me two workouts to complete before my next session with him next Tuesday. I am doing the first tonight. Still very stiff all over from the first session but will try to get a good session in.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Nobody said it was gonna be easy did they? lol

Well done! Having a PT is really motivating huh? Awesome!
