You know, I have read the entire thread and have YET to observe a single damn thing, Chuck. If anything, I'd be impressed if you could shoot fireworks out of your ass while you tell us your qualifications.... but so far, all I'm seeing is a lot of dodging aka bullshit. Hmmm... would your name happen to be Kevin Trudeau? Heaven knows how smart that guy is.

First, let me say I was/am sincerely interested in what you have to say. It seems you are leaning more towards the psychology side of things, which I'm very interested in. If this is the case, I certainly agree that psychology plays a majority role in success of fat loss.

That said, your inability to put your ideas into words, even if it is generalities, speaks volumes in my eyes. It's my eyes though.... don't worry so much about my opinions man. Instead prove me wrong. Getting defensive and making ridiculous claims about me using drugs in response to my very legitimate concerns/questions only paints a picture of foolishness with regards to yourself.

My intent was very clear from the beginning... and that's to maintain a safe/proper environment for the members here.

a) I care a great deal about the members here.
b) We see bullshit on a daily basis which would usually hurt more than help. If you can't understand the standoffish demeanor I/we present, I don't know what to tell you.
c) I'm a mod, it's my job.

So here is me being rational: Cut the bullshit and help someone. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and let you do your thing without interrupting. I sincerely hope you reach someone.

Don't take another personal stab at me.

Your response was really dumb actually. You clearly do not have a deeper understanding of the body and the metabolism and how it all works together. Why is it that I was able to count the exact calories in my food and exercise, along with my RMR, and come out with the deficit being EXACTLY EQUAL to my weight loss for 8 months. But then I kept doing the same things (which dont involve starving and did involve a modest calorie deficit) and I stopped losing. Clearly the body does NOT work completely according to cals in v. out and the metabolism has a way of regulating itself that is not accounted for in your simplistic view. I've had my RMR tested and I know exactly what I burn in a day. I was curious if you knew anything I dont, but I can see you're very rude and VERY full of yourself (and lots of hot air). I really dont have time for reading hot air so thanks for nothing (though you DID TALK a very good game, you're really quite full of it).

Your attitude not withstanding I need to ask you a few things. You claim to be at a calorie deficit and not losing weight. Have you gained any and if so how much and over what time period.

The reality is this. Your body does follow the laws of physics that govern metabolism. If you are at a deficit the is no way you cannot lose weight. There is a lot of information about metabolism. It is very well understood. There are no disorders that can cause the body to have a co efficiency of performance greater than 1:1 so you are either a freak of nature or you are not counting your calories. If there is another explanation please share it.

What I suspect is going on is you are sabotaging your diet. You may actually believe what you are saying is true but we all know what you are claiming is not possible. We need to figure out why you are doing this but first you need to realize that is what you are doing.

Do you have a history of not finishing what you have started? I suspect that is what is going on here. This could also be a control issue for you. In my work with fat people I find that many of them use denial as a mechanism to either continue their behavior or return to that behavior. Watch Brookhaven Clinic and you will see some very clear example of that denial. They too make outlandish claims and while your claim is not as out landish as thise people who claim to sustain 600 pound on 1000 calories a day it is the same thing but on a smaller scale but it will lead to the same results, failure. But that is really what you want.

Deep down you want to return to your old ways. Why? You need to answer why. You need to buddy up with a skinny person because if you buddy up with a formerly fat person your instinct may be to sabotage that person. Fat people do that stuff all the time.

Those 9 pounds are something you are holding onto. We need to find out why you won't let go. That is going to take some hard work on your part but you need to start by stopping the BS.

"I consider myself on of the foremost experts on weight loss and obesity.

If you are struggling and more than 40 pounds overweight I will help you in this thread. I can only counsel 3 or 4 of you at one time.

I need to know a few things"

I'll play along...

Weight: 330lbs currently which has been a 20lb loss thanks to this forum's help.

Age: 27

Gender: Male

Theory on why you got fat: I watched this show on TLC where this doctor said fat people's brains or genes are wired to overreat. I think that doctors reason is part of why I got fat but also I've always found water to taste bland and drinking it plainly makes the back of my throat feel dry and scratchy. I discovered Coca Cola at a young age and loved it more than water and got addicted to it. As for food I guess I liked the taste of fattening food so much and could never quite seem to get full so I would overreat until I was stuffed. Plus vegetables always tasted so nasty to me unless they were cooked in water for a time which would make them soft and kill their horrible taste. Fruits I avoided because in general I found them too sour and they didn't taste any better even while drinking Coke so I avoided them too.

So to make this simpler my theory on why I got fat is I believe my brain or genetics are wired that way as I've had a problem feeling full my entire life on normal sized portioned meals, I hate the taste of uncooked vegetables, I got addicted to sugar filled soft drinks since water to me tasted so bad and messed with my throat and there was no sugar free alternatives to my knowledge when I was a youngster add to that my family at the time only seemed to buy Vitamin D milk you could say my entire lifestyle eating and drinking as a youngster was a recipe for disaster.

Also my mother was overweight too while my father was skinny and my mother's side in general has a lot of overweight family members. Her mother was skinny but her father was fat. So I think thats definitely where I picked it up from genetically since pretty much everyone on my father's side is skinny save for my one cousin who is a bit more than 500lbs but he has a confirmed thyroid condition.

Estimate of your daily caloric intake: Currently 1700 some days 1800 others.

"I have read this forum and I see why many of you are struggling. I think I can clear up a few things for you and get you on the right track. This will take a few days."

Cool.

I wasn't going to bother responding to you but I can see you legitimately believe in your own mind that you know everything about weightloss, as you said, and you think you're truly being helpful. Strange that you somehow believe you know exactly what is my issue without knowing a thing about me. I can assure you that you're totally off base with everything.

My best friend is actually 6' tall and weighed 128 before she recently became pregnant, so its hardly a matter of who I'm hanging around with. And the people on here are so helpful and supportive so I really dont follow your point at all. I managed to lose 30 lbs through online support by overweight people so that is highly insulting for a start that you say I should have "skinny friends".

I would like to know how you are so entirely sure that the body cannot sabotage its fat burning rythms for some reason or other (such as issues with leptin or other hormones such as insulin or adrenaline). I USED to be convinced as you that its all about cals in v. out, but given that I've changed NOTHING since the time when every deficit added up to an equal amount of weightloss (via a spreadsheet that I kept), I can assure that's not the case here. As to whether I regained some weight, I went about 1 month without any fluctuations (which is very unusual for me as I normally fluctuate 2 pounds or so) and for the past 5 months have fluctuated a total of 4 pounds back and forth. Just the past few days I've tried something new and **keeping my fingers crossed** it actually seems to be working for the moment. Not sure if it will continue working so I wont bother going into the method or theory behind it.

You probably won't get this and neither will most people here but I will try to explain.

I'm not Burger King. You are not going to get it fast and your are not going to get your way. Knowledge is not instant. Insight and wisdom take time. I did the 12 step thing with alanon and I would see people struggle and eventually have a break through but it did not happen the first time. I am not disclosing every thing at once because it would take to long and revealing my methods would give fat people a way to circumvent them.

Let's take Mal. She is doing great. I think I was able to observe that she has a really big fear of getting fat again inspite of her success. I reassured her that she was on the right track. She is not out of the woods yet but she seems top be well on her way. She has hit her stride. I do not need to teach her how to run. At this point I can just give her a few atta girls and cheer her to the finish line and hope she doesn't stumble.

I think I have helped Mal and I think if she reads this she will find it helpful. Mal seems to have some self esteem issues and she bring out her quasi anti social alter ego to mask them. She failed to stay lean for a very long time and she proablay has some scars from that. I would like her to know that she doesn;t have to fail and from the looks of it she will be one of the ones who doesn't.

Steve, you are too quick to jump to conclusions You want things on your terms. Fat people act that way. That is what make them fat. Anybody can yammer on and on about diet and exercise. That is all the experts do and the poor results speak for themselves. In my informed opinion diet companies do not have the best interests of people in mind. They are giving bad advice and passing out half truths. Doctors are even worse. People are having WLS and WLS has a 1 in 200 mortality rate. The also are giving patients expensive HCG injections that are totally ineffective.

Steve, believe it or not I have figured it. I think I have studied this in the right way and I think I worked harder on it than anyone else. I understand the skepticism and some of the hostility. I am offering for free a way for people to regain control. I am sorry that I can not explain it to your satisfaction. Things take time. You need to trust me at least a little.

Steve, this in not simple stuff and you are not going to get it in a few hours on a message board. It will take time but the message board is a great therapeutic tool because the is a record and people can go back and review where they have been and where they are. Steve this is psychology but unlike the 45 minute 120 dollar couch trip this works.

You are not hard to figure out. I can see by the tangental nature of this post you are avoiding something.

What new thing have you tried? I think you need some convincing. That will break through your state of denial but it will not get to the root of your problem. Do this. Eat 3 lean cuisines a day for a week. That is under 900 calories. Eat lettuce, 2 apples, Celery, and an orange every day. That will get you to 1100, Currently you are eating about 2050 cals a day. Your resting (basal) metabolic rate is about 1400 calories per day if you are moderately active you burn about 650 calories per day. That is fact.

Get to a gym with an aerobics machine with a calorie counter on it and burn 300 a day. That will take about an hour on an Airdyne and about 45 minutes on an elliptical at a moderate pace. Do the math and tell me what your daily deficit is. How many pounds of fat will you lose?

You are burning 1400 with your BMR you are burning 950 with daily activities and exercise. You are taking in 1100. There are 3500 cals in a pound of fat. How much weight will you lose in 7 days?

Am I getting through? Metabolism IS that simple. It is irrational to believe that it isn't. Why are you being irrational? You need to figure out why you insist on believing things that are not possible. I am not saying you are lying. It would be better if you were because a liar can be outed. I can't out you on this because you really believe something that cannot be true.

It is pretty clear to me that you want to remain fat or you want to leave this unfinished. At this point I can only speculate as to why. I will figure it out. I hope you can too.

Total calories burned: 2036 per day

OK I got it. You seem like an honest guy so I will not have to mince words. That doctor on TLC was full of shit. Most doctors are full of shit. They have not cured a disease in 60 years and they cannot fix the obesity epidemic. That said don't listen to their BS. in 1970 4% of people were obese. So much for the silly doctor and his silly gene theory. We get fat because we eat to many calories of foods that are bad for us.

You are eating 5 to 6 thousand calories a day. There is no other explanation.

You will need to gradually cut back and begin changing your dietary habits. You can aquire a taste for "nasty" raw veggies. You are programed now to crave bad stuff. You need to break that programing.

Change your life style and the weight will take care of itself. Becuase you are not a mental case and just a guy who likes bad food you need to decide what is more important to you, the instant gratification junk food or good health and long life.

Answer this. On a scale of 1 to 10 how important is being healthy to you?

On a scale of 1 to 10 how important is junk food?

On a scale of one to 10 how willing are you to stop eating bad food?

There is no fat gene. I repeat. THERE IS NO FAT GENE. Again the fact that America was not fat in the 70's blows the fat gene theory out of the water. Junk science belong with junk food. In the garbage.

Maybe Steve can explain the metabolism thing to you. For now let it suffice to say that if you were eating 1700 a day on a regular basis the most a 27 year old man could weigh is 100 pounds. Believe it.

Simple. stop being a lazy bastard. You have dropped over 100 pounds. How tough was that?

Why do you want to be unfat?

Can you think of any reason why you cannot get to and maintain a healthy weight?

It looks like you are on the right track. Keep up the good work!

This is a George Carlin rant. The language is salty but he really gets to the point. I think he has the obesity thing figured out. I think this may be helpful.

Don't go back to being a fat lazy bastard. If you recall this thread was for people who are struggling. You are saying that you got it under control.

What is your real problem and how can I help?

Did you watch the Carlin video? What did you think?

At your enormous former weight you probably dropped the first 100 pretty fast. I doubt if you have amended your life style completely yet. You were a "fat lazy bastard" Now you are just fat.

You have a lot of animosity towards people of normal sizes. Why is that?

There were a few fat boys when I was in school and they got their balls busted sometimes usually by the gym coach. I also think they resented the fact that the rest of were more athletic and had girlfriends.

I think if you let go of your resentment and channeled it into fully amending your life you would have a better chance of staying lean if and when you get there.

You weighed close to 400 pounds so obviously you have some serious issues. I am just guessing that it goes back to childhood and the teen years but it is not unreasonable to look at that as a place to start. Then again you might be like most fat people and food is more important to you than good health.

Chuckroast:

My internet sense is that you are a troll. And not a very good one at that.

That being said:

1: If it has taken you from the early 90s to now to figure out that you need a caloric deficit to lose weight, you aren't very bright.

2: Your 'tailored' advice in the last 5 pages of threads comes down to: "If you understand that there needs to be a caloric deficit to lose weight than once you know your TEE for the day, all you need to do is eat below that number. If you aren't, there is a psychological/behavioural issue involved."

Thank you Captain Obvious. However, your blithe statements do not offer how to find your TEE (and your factual assessments of a few people here, especially Blancita, are completely off). You do not suggest meaningful methods to adjust behaviour minus 'just doing it'. You do not delve into nutritional info that allows a caloric deficit to be easier to attain. You don't mention anything about body composition in relation to weight.

My guess? You're an amateur hack who read an article on the internet that really inspired you and you went looking for a forum to share this epiphany and to feel important at the same time. Am I right?

Holy crap that was amazing!!!

oh yeah - and if you actually took the time to figure me out - you'd know that atta girls just piss me the hell off :)

thanks though.. didn't help one bit - i'm still waiting for the information that will help though..

With no disrespect intended.... I'm quite certain you aren't going to 'pitch' anything that I won't "get."

I'm not Burger King. You are not going to get it fast and your are not going to get your way. Knowledge is not instant. Insight and wisdom take time.

And please, answer me this: Who suggested otherwise? I'm not asking you to magically implant what you think you know into all of our minds.

I'm simply asking you to discuss what you know. BIG difference.

I understand that the psychology side of things is quite unique for each individual circumstance.... but you aren't *spitting* anything new here. I'm quite certain, again, that any fitness professional is well aware of the role the mind and the sciences of psychology play in body transformation.

And what gets me about you, as I've stated before is your inability to speak directly. You insist on beating around the bush. And so far, all this 'beating' appears only to build up a pedestal for you to stand on in a weak attempt to make the ignorant think you've 'got' something that they 'need.'

I mean, everyone reading this, please correct me if I'm wrong here. I don't mean to pass judgment. I'm simply explaining what it looks like to the outside onlooker at this point.

I did the 12 step thing with alanon and I would see people struggle and eventually have a break through but it did not happen the first time. I am not disclosing every thing at once because it would take to long and revealing my methods would give fat people a way to circumvent them.

So you refuse to talk about your methods with anyone except fat people that 'need' your 'help?'

Serious question.

That's novel.

Steve, you are too quick to jump to conclusions You want things on your terms.

If by my terms you mean straight and to the point, with no bullshit.... yup, you're right.

But so far, you've been given multiple opportunities to 'show us what you've got' even if we speak in generalities and you can't. If anyone is establishing terms here, it's you pal.

Let me just sum up what's happened so far.

YOU: I am the greatest fat loss expert of all time, Evarrrr!!!1111!!!!!

ME: Why?

YOU: I can't tell you.

ME: Why the hell not?

YOU: I'm magic and I can't show magic in one post.... you need to watch magic as it happens.

ME: That's stupid, but I'll let you play without interruption (which it looks like I lied)

Fat people act that way. That is what make them fat.

So why am I not fat?

Instant gratification from food and instant information form TV computers and video games has programmed them into being impatient. You are guilty of that.

Save the analysis please. You don't know a damn thing about me.... nor do you understand my inner-workings, besides the point that I call things how I see it, which goes right over your head.

I bet you used to be a fat guy.

This proves my point above.

I understand very well how fat people get fat from a psychological perspective. Denial plays a big part of it and so does rationalization.

Oh my goodness....

I've never thought of this. Brilliant!!

For my method to work I need to trap them between logic and illogic. I need to help them recognize their methods of denial and self delusion that they often employ. I can't reveal what is in my bag of tricks. Can you understand that.

No, but I'm very, very stupid and ignorant.

To me, it seems like you read one too many books by Tony Robbins and the like and now you're passing off their tactics as your own.

And another thing, nobody is going to get hurt here. People are free to ignore this and they are free to quit when every they want.

So you're telling me that it's uncommon for people/customers to get scammed by 'fitness gurus'?

Thankfully you aren't or haven't tried selling anything, or I would have made a push to have you banned. That doesn't change the fact that you are creating the delusion that only you know The Way. Anyone with a hint of commonsense understands to walk the other way when it comes to 'gurus' selling/dishing something in a way that makes their ideas, products etc seem like The One And Only Way.
Save it buddy.

Anybody can yammer on and on about diet and exercise. That is all the experts do and the poor results speak for themselves. In my informed opinion diet companies do not have the best interests of people in mind.

Hahahaha, hopefully it didn't take you long to figure this out.

They are giving bad advice and passing out half truths. Doctors are even worse.

And this.

Steve, believe it or not I have figured it. I think I have studied this in the right way and I think I worked harder on it than anyone else. I understand the skepticism and some of the hostility. I am offering for free a way for people to regain control.

Put yourself on a pedestal and expect opposing views and opinions. It's the way it works. Especially in this setting. Do your thing.... I'm not stopping you.

Just don't be fallacious in your presentation with regards to those who are giving their opinions, such as lying and assuming.

I am sorry that I can not explain it to your satisfaction. Things take time. You need to trust me at least a little.

No trust.

But I'm not stopping you from doing your thing. Mind you, this is a public forum, so everyone and anyone is free to discuss anything in a civil manner. If you can't tolerate this, this may not be the best 'vehicle' to use to spread your Greatness.

Sincerely hope you're right.

It's just that even the greatest minds in the sciences dealing with the mind are able to articulate what they know.

You can't.

So why should anyone think you're great?

If the advice you've given to the few brave souls who've posted the answers to your questions is your articulation, it's time to wake up.

OK, I was going to stay quite and just observe until I read this along with some other things you said to Steve. You sound like you have read too many Freudian self help books. As a Psychology major I take great offense to you coming here and claiming that you can analyze the psychology of why this person is overweight, First of all people who think they can "know" a person's reasons for being overweight and having a stall in their loss are quacks plain and simple, there is much research on this topic and no one not even psychologists with 60 years experience can do what you are trying to do and that is have any form of insight into why another person does what they do. It is the people who act this way who give therapy a bad name. I could get into a whole rant about this but I won't, if you want to sound credible here I strongly suggest you stop using psychological methods with absolutely no scientific basis (There is a reason no one uses Freud's approach anymore, because he used case studies, which are no where near generalizable in the first place, and only 20 cases to form his "Theory").

Secondly, What you were saying about trusting a mechanic totally to figure out your car is very naive. I know a lot about cars and once proved a mechanic wrong about what was wrong with my car, he wanted to change a part that was unnecessary to change, he looked at the part that I suggested was the problem and I was right, he was wrong, and it saved me hundreds of dollars. And to answer your previous question, if by AFM you are referring to the air fuel mixture, then the car will either not run at all or will run erratically and inefficiently depending on the severity of the problem. There is no such thing as an AFM sensor on a car.

Third, I have also hit a wall when it came to my weight loss and was definitely in a calorie deficit, without a loss for weeks. I know this because I track every calorie that enters my mouth. I broke through it by upping my calories by 200 per day and burning those 200 calories by added exercise. So I had the exact same deficit as before and started to loose again. Our bodies CAN adjust to what we are doing and so we have to kick it up a notch to get it going again.

I hope you can too.Total calories burned: 2036 per day

Que bicho! You are so pathetically way off. What makes you believe I am perfect about calorie counting for 1 year and I lost an average of .8 pounds per week with the deficits (calories burned through BMR, exercise, lifestyle) matching up EXACTLY to the 3500 calorie=1 lb lost and then that stopped 5 months ago though I didn't forget how to exercise or count calories?? Duh!

Do you know what an RMR TEST is (not an internet calculator but I took the actual test where you breathe into a machine)? Look it up if not. It said I burn 1483 calories if I just LAID IN BED ALL DAY (1900-2000 just doing lifestyle such as walking around on errands, which one does a lot of in this city on a daily basis). I've lifted weights for 15 years so I have enough muscle tone to burn a lot of food.

I would like to know why you believe it is impossible that the metabolism can decide to stop burning fat efficiently when eating at a reasonable deficit? The body CAN refuse to burn fat at healthy deficits or even at normal eating levels. Remember our body is a complex system governed by hormones (have you ever heard of the hormones I referenced? You NEVER respond to the science! You obviously are not able to think in terms of anything that you have yourself not experienced so I must be wrong or a liar. Whateva dude.

And are you seriously recommending that I eat nasty chemical ridden Lean Cuisine (apologies to my friends who eat them)? That I cut my calories to a point where I'm hostile and aggressive? That's how I get when I'm hungry. I can only cut the calories if I dont get that crazy feeling, and what I'm doing now is the only thing that's worked to cut back my hunger.

Funny that you refuse to go into your BRILLIANT weight loss methods but you want to know my new secret. Well I figure I'll test my new thing out first before I would say it worked for sure. Its only been 5 days so I shall see..

I don't think you have looked at Blancita's ticker, she is definitely NOT fat. Saying "fat people do things like that" is a sad, and untrue generalization, how can you help people when you are stereotyping them?

I can't believe that I haven't read this thread until now. This is absolutely one of the funniest things that I have read on this site, without fail... Even funnier than what I normally write (which is pretty damn funny... I am the foremost authority on forum humor... just watch, and it will show).

Most doctors are full of shit.
You're right. My two friends and my mother are completely full of shit. My mother that is an OB Anesthesiologist, that has to attend multiple classes every year to keep up with her specialization, and who injects anisthetic near your pregnant wife's spinal cord... I sleep better at night knowing that she is full of shit...

Steve, you are too quick to jump to conclusions You want things on your terms. Fat people act that way. That is what make them fat.
This right here may be the gem that makes the whole thread sparkle. I jump to conclusions, and I want things on my terms... BAM... My thighs now rub together when I jog. Steve, you are way too fat, you Fatty McFaterson. Priceless.

I bet if we were toe to toe you would behave a bit differently.
THIS is the second best part. You probably get pushed around a lot in real life, so you decided to come on here and act the tough guy, because you are anonymous. You think that cause you're a big guy (if you even are) that you're a tough guy, Tony Robbins? If you wanna play the tough game, we can start posting pictures of all of the scars / surgeries you've had to have because of the different fights you've had to jump into. We'll go one at a time, and whoever runs out first has to declare himself a sissy. As of right now, you're just like a kid playing a video game online bragging about how hot his girlfriend is. Wipe the cheetos off of your shirt, son. Screenshot or it didn't happen.

Michael wrote:My internet sense is that you are a troll. And not a very good one at that.
As far as calling someone else a forum troll... come on, mike... "Yo pot, it's the kettle"... not a malicious forum troll, but you troll here almost as much as steve does! ;)

All in all, I give this thread a 9/10. The only outstanding point is that no one has made any references to the Nazis (Godwin's law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
