Starving yourself - weight loss?

First of all, starving myself is NOTHING i would EVER do. just to make that clear first.

I have heard about people who starve themselves for days and such to loose weight.
i guess they go by the "less you eat, less weight you gain" thing.
now, i have heard that if you do that, you can actually get really fat afterwards. because your instincts will think times are bad, and that you arent getting any food. so it will start saving anything you get as fat. or something like that.
anyways, im really just curious about this and i want to know other things that are dangeoraus about it, exept for starving yourself to death offcource.

i have some friends who have done this, and i would like a bigger arsenal of reasons NOT to do it, so i can tell them if it happenes again.

You're right on the money... not to mention decrease energy, fatigue, body will actually hang on to fat because it needs something to burn, you loose muscle protein (aka loose muscle tone), etc... I'll have to dig my notes up if someone else gets the whole list before I find it :p

As you all already discussed it is just plain unhealthy. Our body needs fuel every single day. Where fuel = food.

A lot of people are amazed to know that we burn calories when sleeping. Here are some facts that you can throw out to people:

- A person in a coma is fed 1200 calories per day by the hospital. Don't you think someone NOT in a coma should have more?

- We burn calories when we do ALL of the following:
* Exercise
* Breathe
* Sleep
* Digest Food (yes, when you eat... you burn calores! It is called the Thermic Effect of Food)
* Be You- your personality plays a factor in how many calories you burn just by being you. Mr. Rogers will not burn as many calories per day as Tony Little.

Not eating or not eating enough causes our body to go into Safe mode. It does not understand that you are trying to look good in a bikini. It thinks you are deserted on an island and starving.

Not eating causes your blood sugar to drop, it slows your metabolism, it causes the body to eat its own muscle, and I believe it causes the bone density to drop. Double check that last one. I am going off memory :)

Though I am a proponent of healthful fasting, I would not recommend starving yourself for weight loss. It's counter-productive and more importantly can have serious, permanent, negative health consequences for people who don't know what they're doing..and some of those who do.

okay thanks. so the thing about safe mode is what i mentioned? that the body thinks its starved and times are though and if you eat like one sandwitch you will gain 300 pounds because your body thinks it will be a long time until next time?:p
