Sparrows Experiment

8 mile run at 8:05 pace. Felt tremendous..finally!

I posted in the "injury and prevention" thread but I wanted to put this here too to get some opinions. Its still not any better and I'm not sure I actually need to go in tomorrow to get xrays or something:

I woke up this morning with a funky pain at the ball of my foot. It hurts of course when I push on it but it also hurts when I bend my toes or flex them. Especially when I flex #3 toe. I didn't do anything to traumatize it yesterday and literally it just showed up as I stepped out of bed. Feels like I'm walking on BONES poking out of my foot. It feels fine when I have my running shoes on..and stubbornly I did run today with slight discomfort. Mostly its horribly painful when I'm barefoot. What is it?

Good thing you posted here since I don't even know where the injury forum is located. This site is too big and confusing for my small brain.

I'll throw a dart and say stress fracture. Quite common in the second or third metatarsel. Does it hurt in that area or at the ball?

Having your running shoe on would help protect the area where as being barefoot would expose it to more pressure.

Have it checked. If you mess around with it, it'll turn into a real fracture. Shouldn't take that long to heal.

I wouldn't even venture a guess. But, having it xrayed to confirm (or hopefully rule out) a fracture sounds prudent.

I had a broken metatarsal from playing softball a couple of decades ago and that hurt like a mother whenever I put any pressure on it, shoe on or off. So, hopefully it is not that.

:( shoot. well I guess I'll check it out. I know they say not to "self diagnose" but stuff I'm finding on the internet isn't encouraging me either. I'd be pretty bummed out if it was a fracture. Stress fractures don't always even show up on xray do they?

You are correct, they do not always show up on an xray. I think a podiatrist should be able to diagnose it rather quickly if that's what it is though.

tell you what...i'll go get my calf looked at if you go get your foot looked at. :)

Just go get yourself checked out, Sparrow - you know it's the right thing to do, if for no other reason, to prevent an injury from really disabling you down the line.

ha. I'm not dr phobic or stubborn when it comes to check ups. I just didn't want to make an unnecessary trip and have the dr say "um its just strained, you're fine". I made the appt for tomorrow 1:30.

1 hour spin
20 min stairs
30 min weights and abs

Felt good overall today. Foot still hurting and I'm headed to the xray in about an hour. I don't think it will show anything so we'll see if my dr is nice enough to investigate a little further without me having to push too much.

Diagnosis: Metatarsalgia. He ordered an xray but the wait was too long today so I may opt not to do it. I'm going to be gone the next few days. Anyway he said there wasn't enough swelling to really suspect a stress fracture (THANK GOD). Said my 2nd toe is as big as my "big" toe and often that means extra stress on the metatarsals in running longer distances. Told me to get "metatarsal pads" (didn't know there was such thing) and get cozy with the pool and the bike for the next 2 weeks instead of run :(
