Smoth squats

Lads(and lasses),

First time using a smith machine for squats today(I usually do Bulgarian Split Squats as the work gym doesnt have a squat rack) and I was wondering what do people do the weight that rests on the back of their neck, I had the bar resting across my shoulders but a lot of the weight seemed to be on my neck and I really then wasent concentrating on my form as it had me in some pretty severe pain.

Any tips?

you shouldn't use the smith machine for squats (nor most other tings) do bulgarian split squats instead.
