smith machine or other free weights?

Hi I am new to this sight and was just looking for some info.

I am 30 years old and have been pretty much the same wight since high school. I actually always enjoyed being small 5-10 140#, but now I want to put some wieght on. I was wondering are there any good online stores to buy homegyms? I am looking for a free weight system, maybe a smith machine or something similar that has a safety factor for a single person workout. The only stores we have around here that sale weight equipment are dicks sporting goods, hibbetts, and sears. I want a good price as well as good equipment.

Any advise would be helpful.

free weights.. free weights.. free weights :D
Smith machine forces an unnatural motion it also keeps you from stimulating your core because of the contrived motion. the synergist muscles barely get recruited at all.
Stay away from the smith.

I agree, free weights (barbell and dumbell), a bench and a power rack is all you need. Try to find a power rack with a chin up bar and dipping attachment if you can. Then you can do all the exercises you need in complete safety.
