Smart or Underhanded?

So I was listening to the tail end of a commentary this mornig. I belive it was Alex Rodriguez who yelled "I got it" as two guys from the opposing team were making a run for the ball as he was rounding second base, making both guys stop (thinking the other would catch the ball). A-rod said this happens to HIM all the time and the other team was just bitter they fell for it.

What do you guys think about this? Is this unsportsman like or part of the game? Seems a little underhanded to me but they were saying "hey, it's part of the game"...

I haven't been able to find a story on it yet...

A. rod is the man so yes it is ok.

a-rod is the most over rated player in the game. if he didn't play on the crappy Yankees you wouldn't even hear about him. it is unsportsmanlike and I wish the up had called him out.

No way dude. Sports are as much about getting into the other teams head and making them mess up as at is about being really athletic.

I say good for A. Rod. He is smart enough to weight the situation into his favor good for him.

As for the guys who fell for it, they should have their communication honed better so as to be able to react to the situation.

Getting into the opponents head is one of the fundamental goals of being an athlete. (also a great form of entertainment for the athletes. They love this stuff.)

I'm on the fence right now. I mean if it happens (to him) all the time then is it fair to castigate one person because of his high profile persona? Then where do you draw the line?

And then what Georgen1 is basically saying 'do what it takes' to get the win. It doesn't seem quite kosher but getting into an opponents head IS part of the game-and by game I mean sports.

I don't know, it's like borderline cheating. Then again so is steroid abuse (and denial) and they haven't done much to stop that.

I know in Football (Soccer to the Yanks) that would count as obstruction, Football also has some nice obscure laws relating to sportsmanship which come under 'behaviour contrary to the spirit of the game'. It basically allows the referee to make his own call on whether something is unsporting and could tarnish the sports image.

I know that counts for Jack in Baseball but you should get some laws in their to prevent stupid behaviour like pretending to be a member of the other team. Can you imagine if every player started doing that?

Oh and by the way:

Interference:
(a) Offensive interference is an act by the team at bat which interferes with, obstructs, impedes, hinders or confuses any fielder attempting to make a play. If the umpire declares the batter, batter- runner, or a runner out for interference, all other runners shall return to the last base that was in the judgment of the umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference, unless otherwise provided by these rules.

Cool, that's exactly what I was talking about, this is almost word for word the same as the rule in Soccer (without the word bat though obviously)

Well, then you can't really blame the players now can you? I mean if the officials don't do anything to stop it, therefor allowing it, they're just as guilty.

People in general will (try to) get away with what they're allowed to get away with...
