Skurgeon’s Diary

I’ve done something to my left hip. Basically got out of bed Thursday and felt a little twinge but that was it. No big deal. Didn’t feel anything after that. Went about my day and by the end of the day it started to hurt and it just kept getting worse and now it’s unbearable no matter what I do or how I try to sit or lay down.

it’s gotten to the point now that I’m in the emergency room at 4am on a Friday waiting to see a doctor. The waiting room is packed so I could be here for hours. It sucks.

When the triage nurse asked me to remove my sweater so he could take my blood pressure he said “Holy cow! Look at the guns on you!”

Those kinds of reactions from strangers are so …. I don’t know….. empowering? Maybe validating for the work I put in? Either way it gives me some kind of a boost inside when someone notices or goes out of their way to comment.

i hope my hip, buttock isn’t something serious. It’s so painful right now.

If the pain is in your buttock rather than where your hip bends it's more likely to be a nerve or muscle issue rather than the joint. Hope it's an easy fix, best of luck!

It’s covering a pretty big area. Towards the back of the leg and then up the side. It only hurts when I breathe 😎

That's perfectly possible. Sciatica is a bitch. I may be 100% wrong though: either way you'll know soon enough and I hope it heals quicly.

Sorry to hear about your pain. One lesson I have learned is the ER doctors are not the best at diagnosing things like this. Not too surprising ER doctors are generalists, good at triage, but not complex problems. I would suggest a follow up with a specialist no matter what the ER doctor says.
I hope it heals quickly.
Me too! Pain is no fun.

Nice! Probably not worth the trip to the ER, but nice anyway.

X-rays show a bit of arthritis in my hip but the doctor thinks it’s bursitis. Gave me a powerful anti inflammatory shot in the hospital that made things way way better. I have a prescription for the next 20 days or as needed for pain and I’m just supposed to take it easy on the use of the joint.

was in the hospital for 9 hours but got got a few hours of needed sleep while they were doing some blood work. I needed that sleep.

9 hours?! That's awful even when you're comfortable and not in pain! Hope the shots and the pills solve the problem and it's a one time thing. Did they mention anything about what might've caused it and how you might avoid repetition?

I felt a twinge in it getting out of bed on Thursday morning.

I had switched the bedroom around and put the bed on the opposite wall so now after about 10 years of always getting out of bed on the right side I went to get out on the left side. When I swung my left leg out that’s when I got that little twinge pop sensation.

but it didn’t hurt or anything. Went about my day and then by dinner sitting at the table I noticed it was bothering me a little and then it just got progressively worse until the next day when it was completely debilitating.

Can't arthritis cause bursitis? I am no expert, but that is what I thought.

I had pretty sever bursitis in my shoulder about 30 years ago. I got a cortisone shot, maybe same as you. It worked wonders, a complete cure, without recurrence for around 25 years. Hope you do as well.

Can you keep exercising? At least some would probably be good for it.

Hope it is over...

So I went to the gym yesterday and did a very modified upper body workout of back and biceps. It went pretty good. I wanted to do more but I quit while I was ahead. Don’t want to be going backwards in this healing process.

I got a decent limp going. It adds character I think. Maybe I should get me a cane and a pimp hat with a large feather protruding from the top. Purple would probably be the appropriate color. More of like a scepter rather than a cane would be better…. Something with like a skull on top.

Then I could walk/limp around saying stuff like: “Yo, what it is player?”

So I decided no gym today even thou I could go I just want to get the rest in because I’m going to try and go to work today and I don’t want to try to do too much too soon. Tomorrow will be the beginning of my weight lifting split which means chest and triceps and then Wednesday would be my leg and shoulder day. I will have to skip all the leg portion of the workout… Back and biceps again on Thursday and then take Friday off and start the cycle again on Saturday …. So hopefully by Sunday when Legs and shoulders comes back around I’ll be able to at least do some modified versions of some things.

I’m having a big problem with stairs right now and getting in and out of my car. Everything else I’ve figured out a decent workaround. Stairs are worse going down, up is one at a time using the handrail fiercely. A curb is now an impossibility without pain… without being able to use my hands to help there’s no way I can figure out to do it. It’s the having all my weight on the bad hip leg at once that’s the problem.

As I was leaving the hospital the doctor asked me if I wanted a crutch and I said no but I realize now it would come in handy in certain circumstances.

I did grab one of those motorized scooters at the grocery store to do my shopping yesterday. I appreciated having that option. Everyone apologizes for being in your way which is weird because they’re not really in the way… I’m just waiting my turn to look at what they’re looking at….and if I was standing with a regular shopping cart I would have to do the same. Gave me an interesting perspective on people who are in wheel chairs. They probably dislike being treated differently, even thou people are trying to be nice?

If you do decide to grab a cane or crutch from somewhere (which would be sensible if the alternative is a limp) make sure you have it on the healthy side. One of my pet peeves is tv doctors using their walking aids wrong.

If my left hip is the problem then the crutch goes on the right side ?

So it’s Tuesday morning. Friday night my hip was so bad I was completely debilitated. I couldn’t find any stationary position without pain. Moving was insane. Stairs were next to impossible. By yesterday it was so so much better and now this morning I’m walking around the house like nothing happened.

It doesn’t make sense. I’m glad I feel this much better physically. Mentally I’m a little gun shy to try anything with it. I just ate a pre workout meal of salmon and potatoes. Just upper body stuff this morning but I’ll still modify things so I’m not standing or adding weight to my lower body. Just seated machine type movements.

I was given 10 days worth of pain killers (1 tablet every 12 hours) I might stop taking them after today and see how tomorrow goes without them.

Fingers crossed the pain will stay away when you stop taking meds!
