So I used to post here regularly quite a while ago. A little about me: my name is Jes and I'm 22 =) I'm 5'6. I originally started off at 195lbs in September 2008. I was working out 6 days a week and I was eating healthier. I dropped down to 155lbs. I lost those 40lbs in about 6-7 months. Then I kind of just quit working out consistently. I went from working out 6 days a week to once or twice every few weeks. I'm not really sure why I gave up. In the past year I ended up putting on weight so here I am again. I just need an outlet as I gradually start this lifestyle change once again. Giving up is not an option for me.

On the 1st I just started watching what I ate, substituting healthier snacks/meals, cutting my portions. A week ago, I added exercise back into my routine.

I love running. When I first started losing weight in 2008, it took me like 20 minutes to run a mile. After running for 6 months, I got that down to a 7-minute mile, which I never in a bajillion years thought I could do. I timed myself a week ago and it took me 10 minutes. So depressing BUT also very encouraging because it's a challenge. I KNOW I can get it down to 7-minutes again. Really looking forward to upping my running this next week =)

Welcome!!

Congrats on your already fantastic weight loss! You did it once- girl, you can do it again!!

I'm also REALLY impressed with your work outs! They're great- and hardcore :) You seem to be getting lots of cardio in there (I loath cardio ;) ) Have you thought about also including some resistance training in there? :)

I also must say that your story about running is inspirational. I would LOVE to be able to run, and today is the first day of my "couch to 5k" training! The fact that you were 20 minutes, then down to 7min - is fantastic! It's still fantastic that you're at 10 minutes! I think I would explode with happiness if I could do that!

It sounds like you're doing great!

Keep it up! And there's no doubt that you'll see changes!!

Thank you so much for the encouraging words!

I love cardio. It's the one thing I can do and I enjoy it.

I DO need resistance training. Every day when I get into the gym, I'll tell myself, "Okay Jes, you WILL do some weights today" but then I don't. I'm kind of embarrassed. Cardio I can do without a problem, I can hold my pace, and I kick ass at it. Weights? I'm always worried I have the wrong posture and someone will make fun of me. I don't know WHY I have that mentality because I've done weights before AND I've been going to the gym long enough to know that no one is ever really watching you. I WILL do weights tomorrow. No more excuses. If I have wrong posture, I'm sure I'll feel it. Only way I'll learn is to just go for it. My sister has been working out with me and she's going to hold me to it tomorrow.

I'm glad I could inspire you with my running! Just go for it. Even if you're slow, your body adapts so quickly.

- 30 minutes on elliptical
- 30 minutes of jogging
- 20 minutes on stationary bike
- 50 crunches

I worked with a trainer for…9 months? We would always do 60 minutes of circuits so one day this week, I'm not going to go to the gym and just do an hour of those. I remember those exercises used to kick my ass!

You're doing great!! And I totally understand the feeling of looking silly by doing something wrong! But hey, like you said, if you're doing it absolutely wrong- you'll feel it! And I'm sure you'll be doing it right! And you can always ask someone too! I find people can be very helpful!

You're doing great! Let us know how it goes! And what you did (I may steal some of your workout!!! hehehehe)

How did you like working with a personal trainer!? :)

Good luck!!

Just some random thoughts I'm having:

1.) I've never really had a scale. When I was working out daily before, I would just weigh myself at the gym twice a month. I did something horrible. I went out and bought a scale last week and now I'm weighing myself daily so I see my weight fluctuating, which is completely normal. However, when I see a slight increase I start to beat myself up mentally and like what did I do wrong?! And when I see a decrease, I should be happy but all I think "Ugh that's too small of a decrease." So the scale has got to go because I'm just focusing on numbers and I was NEVER like this before. It's making everything not enjoyable and I'm stressing.

2.) I feel like I'm just consuming way too much. When I started out, I wasn't really sure how many calories I should be eating so I did some research on this board. Someone posted this link: and I really liked the calculator on that. I think it breaks it down for me really well. But I'm not sure if I'm doing moderately active exercise or I'm considered very active. I work out 6-days a week for 60-90 minutes. I make sure my heart rate's in the burning zone so is that hard exercise? I feel so silly. It just makes a difference when I put moderately active and put my weight loss at 2lbs. It gives me this breakdown:
Calories: 1533, Carbs: 843, Protein: 229, Fat: 459
If I change it to very active, it gives me this:
Calories: 1819, Carbs: 1000, Protein: 272, Fat: 545

I've been hitting around 1800-1900 calories a day. I just feel like it's so much. I think I need to increase my protein because I'm barely hitting the protein goal and I remember when I had a food plan that had more protein in it, I feel full instead of just feeling hungry all the time.

I don't know. I don't know why I am stressing so much because I've done this before. I KNOW this. I KNOW it takes time. I'm being so silly.

Jill - Thank you so much for the encouraging words once again. I really appreciate it.

I loved having a personal trainer. He held me accountable. BUT it was SO pricey. It was worth it though because I learned a lot about exercising and eating, which yeah I know I could have researched on my own. But mainly just really holding me accountable. On days I didn't feel like going to the gym but I already had an appointment lined up with Jared, I knew I couldn't just cancel you know? But also at the same time, I feel like it made me dependent on him. I need to hold myself accountable and that's why this time I'm not getting a personal trainer.

- 30 minutes on elliptical
- 20 minutes on crosstrainer
- 10 minutes jogging
- Chest press

I wanted to shoot myself when my alarm went off at 4:30AM for the gym. First I turned it off and was like "Eff this!" But thennnnn I was like, "Noooo you can do this!!! Get up!" I'm really proud of myself for going =) Had a really slow day at the gym today but I'm glad I got in there and did something. Something is better than nothing, right? I did SOME weights. Nothing major.

Took an hour after I got home to make my meals/snacks for the rest of the day. I WILL stay within my calorie intake for the day! Aiming for 1500.

No gym tomorrow. I'm going to stay home and do an hour of circuits + running around the neighborhood.

Andddd I'm off to work. Working from 12PM-9PM. I'm on my feet the entire time, walking around so I know when I get home tonight I'm going to be exhausted.

Eating was seriously SPOT ON today!

Breakfast #1 (before gym): Protein shake with 1/2 cup of 2% milk, Special K Strawberry bar
Breakfast #2 (after gym): 2 eggs omelet with tomatoes (half a tomato) and bell peppers
Lunch: BJ's caesar salad without the dressing
Dinner: 2 slices of whole wheat bread with 1 tbsp of peanut butter and sliced banana inside.
Snacks: 1 clementine, 8 stuffed mushrooms (with bell peppers, carrots, tomatoes)

I seriously LOVED all the food I had today. It was sooooo good. I LOVELOVELOVE mushrooms so I decided to make stuffed mushrooms where I shredded carrots, diced up bell peppers into super tiny pieces and the tomatoes. I cooked it with like 1/4 cup of spaghetti sauce. It was amazing.

I'm at 1,364 calories. I'm aiming for 1500 today. I'm still going to be up for a while working on law apps so I'm planning on having oatmeal in a bit.

I wish my eating was like this every day.

I was looking at your plan... before I get there, let me say kudos to you for getting back to it and you will see that 7 minute mile again, and maybe even shave off a minute from that! Also, don't stress, you're doing a great job -- shake the stress off. Anyway, your plan, I was curious, does your work-out routine ever bore you? I made 6 days of doing something different just because I thought doing the same thing would drive me crazy! Was just curious if you felt the same and work through it or not. But I read your sister is also helping, that's even better, I think if someone is there they can keep you motivated.

Anyway, it looks like you're enjoying both the work-out and food, and no doubt in my mind you're going to meet your goal in no time! Keep up the great work.

4:30am!?!? GIRL!! You crazy! kudos to you for getting up and making yourself go! That I think is one of the hardest things! Especially at that time in the morning! AND THEN working 12-9...good god girl!! You rock!

Good job on the diet too! You're really determined to stick too it...and let me say, your mushrooms sounds yummy! I might have to try them out!

Good work, and good luck with the law apps! Take it easy today :)

StuntDouble: Hmm…do I ever get bored? Honestly, no. I know, that's probably weird. I followed pretty much the same routine last time I was working out daily as well. My favorite machine EVER is the elliptical. I LOVE THAT THING. The entire 30 minutes are a challenge to me. I always challenge myself to go a little faster than the day before. I know the calories burned on machines is not always correct but I go by that. The higher it is, the higher I've pushed myself. I think when I started out, I could barely do like 275 calories burned in 30 minutes. Now I usually do ~450. It's just a challenge so I don't get bored -- race against time!

OH and I always have my iPhone with me (aside from running) AND I have Netflix on it soooo I just watch my TV shows and work out lol. It works out really well.

Thank you so much for taking the time to drop by and the encouraging words!

Jill: Thank Jill!!! Yeah, I'm an early-goer to the gym. I work retail so my hours are usually 9AM-6PM/10AM-7PM/11AM-8PM/12PM-9PM. AKA ALL DAY LONG. If I wait until after work, then I'll make excuses saying I'm too tired to go and then I won't go. So I just have to force myself to get up early and go to the gym and that way it's taken care of. Also then after I get home from work, I just knock out early and am able to wake up early again the next day to do it again. It's good because I actually feel all energized before I tackle my day. I don't do like labor intensive work but I am on my feet for the 8 hours, just walking around all. day. long.

Welllll…today is my day off from work so I just woke up. I let myself sleep in. I'm waiting for my sister to get back from class and we're going to go work-out. Hope today goes as well as yesterday did!

OH YEAH!!! I weighed myself for today being the 1st. I'm at 177lbs. On January 1st, I was 185 so in the past month I lost 8lbs. Wooohoooooo. I was negative nancy at first because I was originally shooting for a 10lb loss but then I thought about how I had changed my eating habits since the 1st but I only started exercising like the last 2 weeks. 8lbs is still something to be proud of!

Here's to another month with an 8lb-10lb loss!

Well done Jess! That's awesome!
OMG I LOVE stuffed mushrooms too, I used to make them all the time. Might have to buy some big mushies today :)

Keep up the great work, you're totally inspiring!

Ahhh!! This isn't even weight related but this is something I have been EXTREMELY stressed about. I honestly cannot remember the last time I was THIS stressed. I've had a few mini-breakdowns this past month over this.

SO I'm applying to law schools and most of the California deadlines are today, February 1st. It's just been like one battle after another. I tried getting my transcript from UCSD (where I did my undergrad) sent in December but they had a hold on my account because I never did some kind of counseling. BUT I did do that counseling, I just deleted the confirmation e-mail. Then I re-did it. They still wouldn't take off the hold. I had to call the school, track down my consoler, and finally e-mail her the confirmation and she finally removed the hold. FINALLY got my transcript sent over. LSAC (Law School Admission Council) finally got my transcript and processed it. Then they saw credits from a community college (6 credits) and they told me my file was incomplete because I failed to disclose I went to the CC until I got the transcript sent over directly from the CC. I didn't do it on purpose. I seriously COMPLETELY forgot I went there. I took the bio class like my sophomore year of college and had the credits transferred. I found this out last Monday, (January 24th) giving me like 5 business days!!! I went to the CC and they had like NO expedite service. They took 2-3 business days to process the transcript and sent it via regular mail. REALLY?!?!?!? Oh man I was freaking out.

THEN the people I asked for letter of recommendations waited until the very last minute. My second letter of recommendation just got there TODAY. THE LAST DAY.

I CAN FINALLY BREATHE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Omg…I feel so much better. That being said I went ahead and submitted my apps to the 10 schools I was applying to. SUCH a weight off my back!!!

Ahhh I'm soooo happy. I was SO worried they wouldn't receive everything and then I'd miss the deadline. =(

Jess - Thank you for the encouraging words!!! YOU'RE the inspiration with 19kgs lost. You go girl!

Soooooo I thought I would be able to hang and do these exercises. I mean this is what I did 3-times a week with my personal trainer when I had one. Yeah…no. Major fail. I thought it was going to be a relatively easy work-out and that I'd probably end up going to the gym after but umm yeah…no. I worked up a sweat and oh man, I was DRAINED. My legs feel like jello. I'm wiped out.

Amazing work-out. I'm going to try to do these 2 times a week.
2 days of circuits + 2 days of weights + 2 days of cardio = 6 days a week

Eating is spotless so far today; I'm at 1,180 cals so far. Going out for dinner with some friends but I already plan on having a salad.

Hey there!

I totally agree with you - early morning workouts are the way to go! I like to have my PT sessions in the mornings, and then on the weekends, I'm up, out and back by 10am! That's an early workout for me!! That way you have to rest of the day to get work done, and relax! But girl! Your early mornings make mine look like sleep ins hehehehe!

I know how stressful applications can be! But it looks like you got everything in and off! That's great! But it's hard, they make the process so complicated, and you have to rely on so many other people, that it gets stressful! And then they're so strict when some bump gets in your way! I'll keep my fingers crossed for good news! When do you expect to hear? Late spring!? :) Any specific law you're looking to go into!?

Your work out is intense!! I see you got the burpees in there :) :) AND the mountain climbers! You're workin' it!! I imagine your legs were like jellies! Isn't it funny how some exercises just do that? I find lunges just KILL my legs, to the point where I wobble nearing the end! hehehe

I hope you have a fantastic day! And enjoyed your dinner out last night!!

you're doing fantastic!

Super fast post. Jill - I'll reply to you after work, I promise!

Wednesday, February 2, 2010
- 30 minutes on elliptical
- 20 minutes on crosstrainer
- 10 minutes jogging

Only spent 60 minutes in the gym but I made those 60 minutes count!

I feel AMAZING today. It's going to be an amazing day. =)

OFF TO WORK!

Oh yeah! This is why I wanted to post: I feel like I'm in rehab. Do you guys ever get this feeling??? I've never done any drugs but I think this is what it might feel like? Like I feel like any day I can just lapse and I'll quit working out and go back to my old habits. I hate that feeling. I KNOW I can do this. I WANT this to be a lifestyle change. IT IS because I'm enjoying the food I eat. The only major difference is working out. I'm just so scared. I wish I could get rid of that fear. Can anybody relate to this???

Thought I'd stop by to say HI!!!

I know what you mean about rehab. My husband and I refer to our eating habits as being alcoholics. Its a struggle to get away from it, but you can...however, once you have a slip up, "take that drink" its over...i understand! its frusterating! I was just saying that in my own diary today....I lost 5 lbs over the last two weeks, but had a slip up this week and gained it all back. Oh well, 2 steps forward one step back.

TOTALLY agree on the rehab....some times when i'm really tired after a work out...I just kind of sit there, and think, "dear god...it's going to be sooooo long, and so much harder to get to where I want" ... and then I think about giving up, and eating french fries!! But we're stronger than that. It's great to have a place like this, because whenever you're feeling like you want to give up, you can come on here and get motivation!

Glad you're having an awesome day! Rock it out!!!

Jill: They said that I'll hear back within 4 weeks. Omg, I already know it's going to be the longest 4 weeks of my LIFE. I am SOOOO stressed. I'm not really sure what law I want to do. I interned for a civil litigation attorney and I thought that was pretty interesting but it wasn't anything I was SUPER passionate about, you know? I'm sure I'll figure it out once I get into law school and take some courses.

You totallyyyy motivated me to do burpees. I was DYING at like 10 but I pushed through them! I know what you mean about lunges. I was wobbling towards the last few. I can DEFINITELY feel them today!!!

Korrie: Thank you so much for dropping by! =) I'm glad others can relate and I'm not the only one. 2 steps forward & 1 step back is so true. Better than 2 steps back, huh?

Eating was perfect today. My eating is always perfect on days I have work. I have 2 15-minute breaks and a 1-hour lunch. I'm usually eating something every break. It spaces out my calories perfectly. 1st break = clementine + water, lunch = wrap, and 2nd break = oatmeal.

Breakfast #1 (before gym): Protein shake with water, 1 Special K strawberry bar
Breakfast #2 (after gym) Omelet made with 2 eggs, 1/2 a tomato, 1 slice of whole wheat bread
Lunch: MorningStar chik patty wrapped in lettuce with tomatoes, jalapeños, and pickles
Dinner: 1 1/2 cup of whole wheat pasta, 1/2 cup of Prego traditional spaghetti sauce, broccoli, and mushrooms
Snacks: 1 clementine, Quaker maple & brown sugar oatmeal made with 1 cup of 2% milk

Calories: 1243 / 1533
Carbs: 178 / 210
Protein: 68 / 58
Fats: 31 / 51

A little below my intake for the day. I'm probably going to have oatmeal again later on. Oatmeal made with 1 cup of 2% milk is 300 calories and that would put me right at 1543. =)

---

Question: What do you guys think about working out twice a day? I am honestly completely free now. I graduated last June and I've been working full-time. The past 6 months I was busy studying for my LSATs and then working on my law school applications PLUS work but now I am completely free. I have NOTHING but work. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bored. I am just itching to go to the gym or work-out. I know it can be overtraining. I'm just so antsy. I was thinking of my normal work-out in the mornings and just like a short 2-3 mile run at night. Good idea? Bad idea? Or maybe doing cardio in the AM and some resistance training at night?

Hahaha! I'm glad I inspired you (there's a first for everything- right?!! HAHA)

You're killing the eating! That's awesome!

As for the working out twice a day...I dunno! I've heard of people doing it...I think if you listen to your body, and are aware that over doing it can lead to injury, then you should be fine! You also don't want to over do it, and then hate going!! hehe...but hey! If I had your energy and determination - girl, I would be going twice a day!!

- 30 minutes on elliptical
- 20 minutes on crosstrainer
- Jogged 3 miles

Breakfast #1 (before gym): Protein shake with water (yuck), 1 Special K strawberry bar
Breakfast #2 (after gym): 2 slices of whole wheat bread, 1 tbsp. of peanut butter, 1 banana
Lunch: 2 small burritos with beans, tomatoes, bell peppers, lettuce. On the side had a salad with greens, garbanzo beans, olives, and a tbsp. of italian vinaigrette
Dinner: -
Snacks: 1 banana, 1 Special K vanilla crisp bar

Calories: 1196 / 1533
Carbs: 186 / 210
Protein: 43 / 58
Fats: 36 / 51

Killed it in the gym doing cardio today. When I'm on the elliptical, my goal is to keep my SPM between 150-160. Today I did not let myself drop below 160 and was pretty much in the 170-180 zone. Just killed it! AND same resistance as always.

I'm focusing on distance again. When I was working out consistently before I would hit 25 miles per week. Right now I'm at ~15 miles per week. Starting out slow. My goal is to jog 2-3 miles daily and slowly work my way up.

I have ~300 calories left for the day. My mom's making pizza tonight so I was going to have a slice of veggie pizza and then salad. But I had way too large of a lunch. I want to stay within 1533 calories so I think I'm just going to have oatmeal.

Jill - Thank you for your kind (and positive) words :) Yeah, I'm worried I'll overdo it and then just hate it. So for now I'm going to just stick to one really good work-out.

OH YEAH - Do any of you take fish pills? I've been reading around this forum and some other websites and they say if you take it 45-minutes prior to your workout, it's proven to help with fat loss. Can anyone shed more personal light on this? I have the fish oil supplements at home so I took one today before my work-out. I'm going to continue taking them for the rest of the month and see if I notice any difference. I guess it can't hurt?

Edit @ 6:00PM:
I was just looking at pictures on my laptop. So when I lose weight, the weight goes from my face first (I think).

I also took body pictures but I'll have the guts to post those once I hit 150lbs. Hopefully. lol

GURL!! (I use the "u" when i want to make a fierce impact!) -- Your cardio is AWESOME!! Holy jeepers! you're rockin' it! 15 miles a week is amazing! And the way you're going- 25 is approaching quickly! I'm so amazed! Totally motivates me to get to where you are!!

You have such dedication- oatmeal over pizza! Amazing...I would be into that thing as soon as it came out of the oven! I think pizza is my weakness ;)

As for the fish pills- I've never taken anything like that. In fact, I don't normally take vitamins (mostly because I'm so unaware of what they can do!). If you notice a difference- let me know! I might have to start taking them!

Ok..your pictures...I have to get this out of the way! You're gorgeous hunny! You have beautiful eyes! (And I love your hair!!) It takes a lot to post any kind of picture on here, so give yourself kudos! As for the body shots- I think it's great that you took them! Just to have them for yourself, so you can see the difference! If you choose to post them- two thumbs up for your courage! It's a hard thing to do!!

You got this girl! :)
