Shelby's Weight Loss Diary

My name is Shelby. I have had a life long problem with food and weight. There have been times I was at normal weight for my 5'5" height but I have never been able to maintain the weight.

While growing up and throughout my adult life, my father made fun of heavy women. His comments had a profound affect on me and as a result I am extremely self concious about my size. There are times I feel so bad about my size that I don't want to go anywhere, do anything, or see anyone as I feel so ashamed of myself. I just feel like hiding until I look slim enough for the world to see........that's not a very fun way to live one's life.

After much soul searching, I decided that 2007 is going to be the year I partially reach my weight goal. I started my reducing program of eating three small meals a day with two healthy snacks on January 1, 2007. I weighed 272 the day I started and now weigh 252.

My first weight loss goal is January 1, 2008 which is when I want to weigh 175 pounds. My second goal is to weight 135 pounds on my birthday which is at the end of July 2008.

I am really excited about reaching my weight loss goals and for finding this site to keep a diary of my weight loss journey. I am looking forward to getting to know all of you during my adventure.

Take Care,
Shelby

Hi Shelby, and welcome to WLF!

I know exactly what you're talking about with your parents. When I was growing up, my parents were always talking about this fat person and that fat person and how ugly that was. Meanwhile, I could never leave anything on the plate, and my mom got offended if I didn't take seconds. They were wonderful parents, and they did the best they could, but sometimes parents unconsciously can cause problems for their kids that last many years.

For at least 20 years, I think I tried to lose weight for them, not for me. And that I can tell you is a failing strategy. You have to do it for yourself, no one else.

That's great that you're giving yourself some good time to get the weight off, too. In fact, my goal ends at the end of 2008 as well. We will celebrate online together! Actually, my birthday is in July, too, and my diary is called "Fit by 60", which will be in July 2008.

This site is loaded with fantastic information, and it's not filled with a bunch of people hooked on fad diets and magic pills. What you get here is the straight talk.

If you've got some time, peruse Steve's diary, where you'll find reams of good stuff, along with lots of adoration from his many female fans.

Also, you might do a post in the Harsh Truth section, where Leigh and Steve both dispense some excellent advice on your current program.

Good for you for changing your life!

Just think how DRY that diary would be without us???
;)

Shelby, you and I have very similar starting points and ending goals - and let me say that your time frame is very reasonable and you CAN do this!!

I know, I know -- I'm just jealous! ;)

No need for jealousy, you're beginning to collect your own following too ya know ;)

(and Shelby, don't mind us, we talk our way through everyone's diary) LOL!

Thanks TomO and M2M for the welcome to WLF. Today is going along well and I am sticking to my program. The encouragement on WLF is very inspiring.
