Sara's First Diary

And since that last post was getting so huge, here is another one for today :)

23/02/11

Breakfast: 1 slice of whole wheat bread with ham (~74kcal total) with skim milk (~70kcal)
Snack: cereal bar (88kcal)
Lunch: tuna sandwich in one of the school bars...it had mayo ;_;
Snack: cappuccino at a coffee shop
Dinner: exactly the same as yesterday (leftovers)

Today was a great day!! Not diet-wise, but in general: that cappuccino, during the afternoon? It was a date :blush5:

And today I also got back to karate practice! Finally! I went there to speak to the sensei, but ended up training for 1 hour :D (I had taken the karate uniform just in case...and I'm glad I did!)

So now, I have a new exercise schedule:

Monday - karate
Tuesday - strength training
Wednesday - karate
Thursday - strength training
Friday - karate
Saturday - strength training
Sunday - rest

Let's see if I can keep it up or if it is too much... Karate is ~90 minutes, and for the strength part I guess I'll do bodyweight exercises similar to what I did yesterday. I have no idea why, I just prefer them to weights (and they're easier to do at home, which is a bonus). In the future, I'd also like to incorporate some basic gymnastic poses in the strength workouts, mainly because I like the challenge - I found I can hold the frog stance with bent elbows for almost 10 seconds :D

...I sound pretty excited, don't I? I guess today was an awesome day :p

Ok! Gymnastic poses? OMG! You go! That's insane! Can you do the bridge? The one where you bend backwards and support yourself with your hands and feet? I can't, although I would LOOOVE to be able to do it!

And it's great that you're getting back into karate! It's so important to find something that you love!

How was your first session!? Did you find it difficult? Easy? :)

What kind of data analysis and research are you doing?!!

Wow, you replied so fast! I was still in the middle of writing the post for today.

I'm currently participating in a project - together with another student - at the neurosciences research unit of the institute of molecular medicine in Lisbon. We're studying Alzheimer's disease in mice, and we're interested in looking at what is happening at the neuron level. I could be more specific that that, but the details are a bit more technical and probably boring :D

On the other hand, what I was doing today, is *definitely* boring. I had to write a report with the data I already have for this work to be credited by the school.

Yeah, gymnastic poses are really hard. But I like the challenge :D
I can do the bridge, but not that well. In that case, my problem is mainly lack of flexibility in my shoulders and back, that's why I'm making an effort to stretch regularly (it also helps with kicks and stuff like that in karate). When I do the bridge now, instead of making that inverted U shape, it's more like an inverted |_| ...
Oh, and I'd love to able to do a handstand. Just because it looks fun.

And I'm really glad I'm back to karate, I like it so much more than 'normal' cardio. And after not training for months, I was surprised that I still remembered most of the movements! The instructor is also great, I already knew him and had occasionally trained with him - his classes are pretty intense!

Today was an okay day, nothing exciting.

24//02/11

Breakfast: same as yesterday
Lunch: salad with lettuce, tomato, canned mushrooms (~20kcal) and some croutons (~50kcal) - w/olive oil and vinegar
Snack: I went shopping during the afternoon and when I got home I was really hungry, and I had some milk (~70kcal), 3 raisin cookies (~90kcal), and 1 small piece of dark chocolate...
Dinner: 1/2 boiled grouper fillet with 1/2 potato and broccoli - w/olive oil and vinegar - and 1 orange

I only had time for exercise after dinner, and today was a strength training day. I did 2 circuits of the following exercises (which I'm going to name 'workout B'):
- band chest press (8 reps)
- band high pulls (10 reps)
- bodyweight squats (25 reps)
- band good mornings (10 reps)
- bench dips (8 reps)
Followed by this core circuit - 'Core II' - which I also did twice:
- V-ups (15 awful reps - these are hard)
- supermans (20 reps, also not great)
- chinnies (40/30 reps)
Plus 10 minutes of stretching

I'm tired and I can't think of anything else to write, so I guess I'll go to sleep. Good night! (in case anyone in a time zone similar to mine reads this...)

Just came back from 90 minutes of karate!

Eats for today - 25/02/11
Breakfast: same as yesterday - this is getting boring ^^'
Lunch: vegetable soup, pan-fried pork steak (~3oz) with 'esparregado' (I already tried to explain what it is in a previous post), 1 slice of pineapple, and 1 raisin cookie (~30kcal)
Snack: 2 raisin cookies (~60kcal)
Dinner: vegetable soup, 1 slice of whole wheat bread (67kcal) with ham (~7kcal), 1 orange, and 1 small piece of chocolate
---karate---
Snack: glass of skim milk, I was hungry after training... (~70kcal)

Grrr, I'm eating way too much. And so much junk, too! I really have to cut down on the chocolate and cookies (but I just love the combination of an espresso with no sugar with a cookie or a chocolate, it's so good...).

And now I'll go to sleep, I have to wake up early tomorrow. I'm doing an optional course about electrocardiogram, which is Saturday the whole day and Sunday morning, so no lazing around during the weekend for me x)

Your research sounds interesting!! I think anyone who does research is conscious of how it might sound to people! I know I sometimes get tired of explaining it! hehehe, my mom still doesn't know what I'm doing, even though I've told her a trillion times!!

And data analysis...that's actually something I don't mind. I have a bunch of it to do this weekend, and 3 papers to pop out!! eeeep (1 is a technical paper, 1 a grant, and 1 and analysis driven discussion) .. I can do it, right?!!! *crazy*

hehehe..it's great that you're getting back into karate. I can't say it enough, but it's important to have things that you enjoy!! :)

Your diet and workouts are fantastic! You're really pushing yourself to do a mixture of things!!! You're very motivated and self-driven which is great!! keep it up girlie!!

I hope you have a fantastic weekend :)

Hey!
