Sam's weightloss diary

Had a good week, cheated with some mince pies but I didn't exceed my weekly calorie goal I simply added any excess for each day on to the next day. Rolling over calories to the next day is a great way to mitigate the damage done by snacking, you just have to be careful that doesn't build up over time and become unmanageable.

All good stuff ,, hi my name is sam hadfield im from london,,, last year i had a heart attack its been a year now, i stoped smoking and put on 3 stone ,, god am i feeling it now,, i need to lose 3 stone ,,so after christmas i have to go for it ,, its good to see you llot doing well at it , sam

OK so christmas and new years has taken its toll, it's not unexpected however since I hosted a LAN party over the new year period, for those who don't know that's where people bring their computers to a party and everyone plays games all night, snacks, drinks and has fun.

I'm up about 8lbs, I know from previous experience that not all of that is actual body weight, some of it is from sheer volume of food, some from water retention due to salt and fatty takeaway food, I suspect the actual damage is about 2-3lbs, so I'm guessing I'll be down about 3-4lbs this week.

Since new years people traditionally make resolutions I guess mine will be to set a new weight loss goal, I'm very close to my initial goal of being in my healthy weight range (189lbs) so I will set a new goal of the middle of my healthy weight range, 178lbs.

Hope everyone had a merry Christmas and happy new year, best of luck with any new year goals you set yourself.

OK so started the new year week on 200.2 which was mildly depressing but not too unexpected, and after a week of harsh diet and de-bloating from all the large xmas meals, I'm down to 196.4 already, so I'm really happy about that!

Weekly update, I'm down to 194.4, turns out for some reason I had a freak weigh in on the scales and though I'd dropped way more than I actually had, last week I went from 200.2 down to 196.4 and this week im down 2lbs to 194.4, so while I'm not where I thought I was, I'm still making good progress, slow and steady.

Nicely done, already well back under the 200's and nearly to your next goal. I like your idea of keeping a running log on the front of the diary so you can go back and review.

Still early days of my journey but I hope to follow your success.

Another week and no real movement, starting to get really tough now, I've been in the 190-200lbs range for what feels like months, I was hoping to keep up momentum and hit 190 this week but no dice. I'm not sure if this is just the typical awkward week you get from time to time or the start of a plateau, hopefully I'll be back on track soon.

Wouldn't be concerned yet. If it lasts another week or two you could maybe considering throwing in a few new exercises to shake things up a bit and could always start tracking calories in and out to make sure you're eating/burning enough.

Yeah I am tracking calories already, I'm using livestrong.com they have a calculator, currently on about 1400 calories which should be a 2lb a week loss which seems to work OK but now I'm down to nearly 190 it feels like maybe it's starting to fail. I think you're right though, it's best to track it for a few weeks, I've had bad weeks out of the blue before and recovered the following week it's just the 190-200 range is starting to really mess with my head becaue I was almost under 190 before xmas but over endulged and now I have to do it all over again.

Down to 190lbs last night, really dieting hard this week and it feels like its paying off, 1 more lb to go, I can feel success just around the corner! :)

Back on track this week at 191lbs weigh in, actually the low point this week was 190 so I'm pleased to make up for last week being crap.

I've altered my final goal somewhat, I've decided that I'll try and shoot for the middle of my healthy weight range, I checked out the NHS charts for a 6'1" man and it recommends 10 stone to 13.5 stone as the healthy weight range, the middle of that is (13.5 + 10) / 2 which is 11.75 stone or 164lbs, I figured that probably 12 stone is a nice round number to hit and finish on, right near the middle, so I've set that as my final goal, it does mean I have a bit further to go than my initial plan but that's OK.

That means left to lose from today is 191-168 = 23 lbs, I think that's going to be manageable, my only worry is that as I get lighter my maintenance calories drop and that makes maintaining weight loss through diet harder, I started with a 3lb per week loss (1500 cal deficit per day) and then had to drop to 2lb per week eventually, very soon I'll have to drop to just 1lb per week which will make the last 23lbs take the longest to get rid of.

Hope everyone is doing well in their weight loss, have a good weekend!

Wow, quick mid-week update, I finally passed my 189 goal and tonight weighed in at 188.8lbs, this was the goal I set myself when I first started, so that portion of my weightloss is done now, I'm down to a "healthy" weight whatever that means. Now it's just a case of losing a little more to get to a place where I feel happy with my body and look.

I feel kind of elated tonight, going to have a few drinks and celebrate :)

Awesome work!!!

That's a big reason for a well deserved celebration. Enjoy the drinks and the relaxing, tomorrow the task of figuring out what to do next will begin.

A while since I posted anything but weight updates...well today I measured in a mid week weigh in of 182lbs which is 13 stone, so that's my next goal hit.

I now only have 1 final goal which is 1 more stone to 12 stone which will be more or less dead in the middle of my healthy weight range, I'm feeling really good now and I'm so glad I started this 40+ weeks ago, anyone thinking of starting a diet and needs encouragement should really take away from this that it doesn't matter when you start, when you finally get in reach of your goals it's an amazing feeling, and the sooner you get started the sooner you'll get there :)

Well done Sam! Must be pretty amazing to have dropped so much weight over the past months. What are your plans to maintain your new athletic weight?

Thanks feelinggooder, my initial plans are to keep tracking my calories, once the diet is over I'm going to switch to eating my maintenance calorie limit per day and spend at least a few months tracking my weight and getting a feel for how much I can eat in my new lifestyle, once I think I understand it all i'll eventually stop tracking and just try and move on.

I think being able to finish your diet and stabalize and then move on without needing to constantly keep an eye on things is a really healthy thing that we all learn to have to do, once it's over it's over and I need to be able to return to "normal life" without worrying about it all.

After what has been about a month with no updates, I'm sorry to say I've slipped, it's been an emotional time for me and it's resulted in me not caring about my diet for a short period, drinking an excessive amount and then eating takeaways.

Anyway that's over now I'm back on track and with a week of really heavy dieting and being very strict I'm starting to see it pay off again and I'm feeling happy about myself again. I've updated my log in my first post with new weekly weights up to week 47, only 5 more weeks and it will have been a full year of dieting which seems crazy!

A great week this week, ending on a new lowest ever, 181lbs.

Diary on the front page has been updated to this week, only 13lbs to go to hit my final goal :)
